Popular songs you actually don’t like

Neighbours a few doors away have been out in the garden, having a bbq and playing music.
Earlier, they played ‘Sweet Caroline’ on loop 4 times 🤪
I remember reading somewhere (maybe on MN?!) that some people can’t stand this song.
Personally, I don’t mind it, but maybe 4 times is a bit much!.

What other songs which are deemed “popular” but actually grates on your nerves?
Mine are Seal’s Kiss From a Rose, The B-52s Love Shack and Fairground Attraction’s Perfect - just for starters!

I like it. It's a great, different sort of song and I don't care that it's not a love song

I HATE this one. It is disgusting. It was on the radio the other day and my six year old was singing to it. Made me hate it even more!

I also get annoyed every time I hear Bitter Sweet Symphony by the Verve (had to look the group name up). Utterly pretentious shite. And the singer got annoyed that they had used his masterpiece for a car advert... mate they have used all the classics, that they have used your piece of sh.. is a compliment.

O and edited to add, I hate Cliff Richard with a vengeance. He has given me the creeps since I was a kid, I can´t explain it. My grandmother loved his music and was totally bemused by this. Awful, awful singer.

Ds 2 was on holiday and the rep was saying he really hated ‘ love on the rocks ‘ as everyone tried that on Kareoke night. It is a slow one and a bit dull.

My dad hated Cliff Richard. Do you remember many years ago when Wimbledon was called off due to rain & Cliff got up and serenaded the crowd. My dad said "as if the poor people haven't been through enough with the rain, then that plonker gets up abd sings!!!!"

Cliff is surely objectively awful. Have you heard the lyrics to Living Doll?? 'Got to lock her up in a trunk so no big hunk can steal my walking, talking living doll' wtf.

Also he used to live very close to my sister in Portugal and let's just say he has a reputation...

I hate Country songs, pretty much all of the genre.

YY to the oeuvre of Katy Perry - voice and songs alike, can't stand. She's even worse than Taylor Swift.

Agree with all of these other than Fairytale of New York. The video is a work of art, the chemistry between Shane and Kirsty is tangible. Plus Shane looks fit as feck 😍

Richard Ashcroft didn't make any money from the song for ages, as it was ruled that he had ripped off a cover arrangement (not even the actual original recording) of a Rolling Stones song.

I gather that their management and lawyers had picked up on it and swung it so that Mick & Keith got all the royalties as songwriters, without M&K's knowledge.

Once M&K heard about it, years later, they withdrew all claims to the royalties and let Richard have them from then on - I doubt they needed the money!

Nice story. As an aside I love the video for Bitter Sweet Symphony (love the song too). Probably my most favourite music video ever.

Lyrics that make me cringe and turn off straight away - It Wasn’t Me by Shaggy, I just cannot listen to the whole song, the second I realise it’s that song, I turn it off. Awful awful lyrics and surprisingly played quite a lot on the school run 😠

Artist I cannot listen to is Meghan Trainor. She gets turned off too!

Walk of Life by Dire Straits is awful, but any of that ilk of granddad rock or soft rock is cringe. Same with whatever the Lightning Seeds are.

Stupid novelty songs like Lily the Pink, Mouldy Old Dough or that combine harvester song make me want the earth to be nuked, as does the Bee Gees' voices.

Happy by Pharell Williams, Thunder by Imagine Dragons, Shake It Off by Taylor Swift.

If you mean the combine harvester song by the Wurzels I'd agree. The Melanie version is far better IMO
