Popular songs you actually don’t like

Neighbours a few doors away have been out in the garden, having a bbq and playing music.
Earlier, they played ‘Sweet Caroline’ on loop 4 times 🤪
I remember reading somewhere (maybe on MN?!) that some people can’t stand this song.
Personally, I don’t mind it, but maybe 4 times is a bit much!.

Are you a fan?
What other songs which are deemed “popular” but actually grates on your nerves?
Mine are Seal’s Kiss From a Rose, The B-52s Love Shack and Fairground Attraction’s Perfect - just for starters!

Anything by Elton John (can’t stand him)
Come on Eileen
Sweet Caroline
3 Lions

I Wanna Dance With Somebody - Whitney Houston. Screechy and hate the video where she does that valse laugh.

Anything by Adele and Florence & The Machine, voices like a foghorn.

Feelingstrange2 · 20/05/2025 08:10

Time Warp is from a cult film. Not sure it's to be enjoyed the same out of context apart from as a daft group dance like Agadoo.

Rocky Horror is fab though- cult classic

ConnieHeart · 20/05/2025 08:27

I agree with Don't Stop Believing. I rarely heard it until Glee came out. Now I hear it all the bloody time! It's very 80s and has not aged well

I so agree re 'I wanna dance with somebody'.

I also hate that Bryan Adams Robin hood song.

Simply Red - Fairground. Hate that song. Hate that man.

Toploader - Dancing In The Moonlight

Yeah I call them Simply Shite! OHs aunt has met Mick Hucknall & said he's very nice & humble apparently

boobot1 · 20/05/2025 08:35

Anything with a dance attached to it.

Uptown funk Bruno Mars. Kiss Tom Jones😱

Someone did a parody of that called Dark Lord Funk, the dancing in that video is better than the original. 😁

Aren't her songs dreadful! Trite, mediocre, banal.

Agreed

I loved her when she first came out in the 80s with just good pop songs (admittedly written by SAW but I think they gave her their best songs). I went right off her when she ditched SAW and tried to go all serious. I like Padam Padam though & she does put on a good show

Jeez, you are a miserable lot! Are there any well known songs that you DON'T hate?

I will concede that The Power of Love by Jennifer Rush and especially Mull of Kintyre have dirge like qualities, but I still don't mind hearing them once in a while.

I think that Loving You by Minnie Ripperton is beautiful actually. It's also especially poignant as I believe she died of cancer not long after recording it, leaving behind her very young daughter. Who grew up to be the actress Maya Rudolph.

Yes, there's lots I like. Bring Me To Life by Evanescence, Nemo by Nightwish, Heaven's A Lie by Lacuna Coil, Duality by Slipknot, Somewhere I Belong by Linkin Park, Freak On A Leash by Korn, Antihero by Taylor Swift, Broken by Seether, Shatter Me by Lindsey Stirling, Angels by Within Temptation.

(Maybe popular is stretching it a bit but they're the more well known songs that got me into various bands in the first place, spot the odd one out.) 😁

P.S. I loathe nearly all Christmas songs. Christmas carols/hymns, I adore. All the shite that gets played on the radio over Christmas is dire and needs to get in the bin. Naughty Christmas by Lacuna Coil can stay though, because that's awesome. 😁

Edited

Your first few 'likes' take me right back to the days when DH and I had Kerrang on a loop almost constantly. Oh, the nostalgia!

I think I'm way overdue another Download festival. You're never too old!

YYY to the Christmas songs. The old Andy Williams/Nat King Cole I can tolerate but mostly anything post 1980s is nearly uniformly terrible. What was it with that period and Christmas 'music?' And we've never got rid of it since.

I feel a bit bad for slagging him off now 😄I’ve always got twat vibes from him for some reason.

Anything by The Beautiful South, especially ‘Don’t marry her’. Yet I know they’re really popular.

My sister is a bit churchy and many years ago, her husband bought her the CD with "blue" in the title. That song has "Don't marry her, fuck me" in it, which she hadn't clocked until some of the church ladies were round... at which point, they all heard it.

Sis swiftly changed the CD.

When I bought the cd there was a warning sticker on the cover saying "track 1 contains some very "blue" language". The album was shit though. Only good songs imo are Don't Marry Her & Rotterdam

'Blue language'? Did you buy the album in the 1970s?! Grin

I've never seen anything other than 'parental advisory' or warnings of 'explicit lyrics'!

They were trying to be funny, as the album is called Blue Is The Colour

Ah, OK, thanks - that makes a bit more sense now!!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 20/05/2025 18:59

Grin Grin all I can recommend is 99% of you don't go on a cruise , never a night goes by without someone taking a crack at Sweet Caroline on the Kareoke Grin

One of the entertainments team came onto stage to "Blurred Lines" and left to "Uptown Funk" .....you'd have hated it Grin

GodDamnVampire · 20/05/2025 19:14
