I completely agree about the nhs - and in general, the link between you put something in, you get something out is broken. Where is the talk about ‘rights and responsibilities’…

SMH at the idea labour have fixed the economy…we all know yet more tax rises are coming in the autumn.

TheNuthatch · 10/06/2025 10:40

Today's YouGov voting intention poll:

Reform - 29
Lab - 23
Con - 17
LD - 15
Gr - 10

It will be interesting to see how the u turn impacts polling numbers over the coming weeks.

Interesting loyal Labour admitting Reeves is bad. All those posts on how maligned she was.

Starmer is accountable too. Hope he feels it in the polls.

It's their way of protecting Starmer. Strange mentality when they're happy to refer to the 'Truss mini budget'. She was the PM, not the Chancellor.

Truss was responsible, therefore Starmer is responsible. The PM is also first lord of the treasury. I reckon Starmer will be out of the country by tomorrow afternoon!

Very true. We’ve moved on from ‘it’s not Reeves’ fault’.

It’s still Starmer’s however he spins it or tries to ignore own culpability.

Cannot believe the majority of meat slaughtered in this country is halal - non stunned. I’m not very meat eating unless I know where it’s come from but now I’m really not eating it jeez just disgusting

Truss and Kwarteng were both blamed not just Truss. They were rightly considered a calamitous double act.

I didn't know that. My dc are big meat eaters but I try to buy it locally from the farm or butchers.

That isn't true according to the RSPCA. The majority of halal meat is stunned:

Around 88% of animals slaughtered in the UK for Halal are stunned first.

All animals slaughtered under the Shechita (for Kosher) are non-stunned.

The latest Food Standards Agency figures show an estimated 30.1 million animals will be slaughtered without pre-stunning in 2024:

26.7 million meat chickens (2.8% of total slaughtered)
3.1 million sheep (28.8% of total slaughtered)
35,000 cattle (1.9% of total slaughtered)

I agree that not stunning first is barbaric and the fact that 30.1 million aren't is disgusting, but it is not true to say that the majority of animals slaughtered aren't stunned first.

I just listened to The Wargame podcast. It's brilliant but scary. I'm seriously considering doing some prepping!

A whole hour pretending Ben Wallace is PM <sigh>
Back to reality with slimey Starmer.

@PlutoCat you maybe right I hope you are. There was a debate in parliament yesterday with Rupert Lowe asking for it to be clear on packaging halal meat as right now it’s not and more than you would think is sold and is halal. School food is as I understand it

Such a shame. He does speak well but seemed to want a break or maybe it was the NATO job. Either way we’re missing a better politician.

Yes I think that is true about school food. I guess it is easier than offering two kinds of meat. There should be something in place to make sure it is the stunned type.

Thinking about all this puts me off eating meat generally, it is cruel whichever way you look at it.

Parsley1234 · 11/06/2025 07:39

@PlutoCat yes me too it’s hardly a great experience stunned or not but bled to death with a prayer over it is just obscene

Upstartled · 11/06/2025 09:42

Hello. Hope everyone is well. Are we ready for Reeves-maggedon today? Braced for brutal savings in the departments and some distracting bling with borrowed money splurges on the never never to be paid for with taxes announced in the Autumn budget. Wonder what they'll bury the bad news under today?

User450877 · 11/06/2025 09:57

tough decisions on taxes ahead say all the pundits. How many more strange, non income tax related tax rises can they find to create yet more market distortions?

the NI rise clearly impacting employment…

I dread to think who is in the firing line this time. You can only cross your fingers and hope the eye of Sauron doesn't fall on you next.

@Upstartled! Have missed your posts. Welcome back.

Upstartled · 11/06/2025 10:03

Thanks @EasternStandard! I've taken a bit of a break from politics generally for the last few weeks so might be a bit slow till I've caught up.

TheNuthatch · 11/06/2025 10:09

'the eye of Sauron' 😂

You have been missed @Upstartled.

Let's see what Madame Deficit has in store for us today.

😬 at last few posts at least we can have a laugh as Labour go down the gurgler.

TheNuthatch · 11/06/2025 20:16

Sorry I didn't watch or listen to pmqs or the spending review. I didn't have a strong enough constitution for Rachel today 😂
I'm assuming she committed to spending billions that we don't have, whilst trying to convince us that she is doing a good job?

I didn’t either but I think that worker guy behind her left shoulder summed it up for the nation and we’re all off the hook, no need to anymore.

I can sum up. Tories, sneer, fixing the foundations, further and faster, gibber about Reform, sneer, manic smile, tax, spend borrow until the pipe squeak, done. Manic Starmer next to clap on back.

Upstartled · 11/06/2025 21:52

I was all set to watch it in full but then I went out for a surprise lunch, so I'm not much help. I can't make much out of the media coverage that has followed - beyond the obvious headlines (wins for NHS, defence and tech and taking a hit are the civil service, local government and education) Huge additional capital spending and Keir isn't ruling out tax rises.

TheNuthatch · 11/06/2025 22:02

Ha, love your summary Eastern.
Same old then 🙄
I'm glad it's not just me who can't be arsed listening to the gaslighting drivel anymore.
