Anyone else just love a clean and tidy house?

In my youth and when I first lived out of home I was a messy sod, and I didn’t seem to notice at all. I’ve just spent the last few hours tidying and setting things up for next week. The washing and ironing are done, the house is freshly hoovered, a candle is lit. Food shopping done, work bag packed- you get the picture!

It didn’t happen overnight but I gradually seemed to realise a) I was living in a grotty house and b) if I keep on top of things, it’s no more than an hour a day plus a bit more at weekends to live in a house that is always ‘guest ready’.

I fear I have officially reached middle age 😂

Soothing, satisfying and relaxing!

OnArainyNight · 11/05/2025 21:07

Yes, I couldn’t live any other way

Disappointedneighbour · 11/05/2025 21:07

Yes, love it. Though my tidiness skills are still a work in progress

Procrastination4 · 11/05/2025 21:08

I am envious of you! I always INTEND to get on top of the housework and keep on top of it but, as you may establish from my name, I’m absolutely brilliant at getting detoured and putting it off until “tomorrow”. Cue the mad panic dashing around vacuuming/dusting/
cleaning the bathroom when guests are about to arrive.

Or else, I start off on a job, eg cleaning the bathroom, and instead of just getting a general clean done, I end up taking out an old toothbrush to clean “properly” behind the taps/tiding and sorting out the presses and drawers that could easily be left to another time, etc.

So I am very envious of you as you seem to have it all sorted! (And I am DEFINITELY middle aged!🤣)

@Procrastination4I had to work so hard to get into a routine. I remember going round to a friends house and just being astonished by how tidy it was. When I got home it seemed to look even worse than I remembered and I had a word with myself! My big thing is always emptying bins every day (there are waste paper baskets in each room), doing a load of washing every day, hoovering every day and cleaning the kitchen after every meal. It seems to keep the grot away, and leaves room for the bigger jobs. I am partial to a bit a lot of procrastination!

I love a clean and tidy house.. but not enough to clean or tidy it.

Waggytail · 11/05/2025 21:23

Yes, wish I had one. My house is a tip

AlexandraJJ · 11/05/2025 21:26

I can’t settle if anything needs doing no matter how tired I am. Such a lovely feeling when it’s all clean and tidy it’s worth the pain of keeping it show house perfect. Personal life a mess but my house isn’t 🤣

Hiker27 · 11/05/2025 21:27

As a child I lived in a chaotic, messy moderately filthy house. I was very happy and deeply loved.
But I now live in a very very tidy and clean house. I love it and mess makes me anxious.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 11/05/2025 21:28

Our house is always perfectly clean and tidy.
DH and I share the housework.

Silvertulips · 11/05/2025 21:29

We’re away on holiday, the house was scribbled before we left. Teens are at home. It’s not going to end well, is it?

PoppyBaxter · 11/05/2025 21:40

Same. I can't go to bed knowing I'm waking up to any mess. Everything is in it's place, clean (enough) and tidy, my packed lunch is made, breakfast prepped and work bag packed.

NoEffingWay · 11/05/2025 21:59

@Silvertulipsgoing by DS’s room, possibly not! Have sorted his out today, and took a picture to remember it. He is happiest in squalor it turns out…I go in and blitz it once in a while. Trying to teach him a bit of independence but it makes me itch.

I love this very much. I think keeping my home nice is a form of self care. My home is my place to rest and recoup and be comfortable, and I can't have that in a messy place. I do a few hours once a week, and then we tidy as we go for the rest of the week.

Fragmentedbrain · 11/05/2025 22:06

No I associate tidiness with joylessness

Same but the DS left at home is 28…

I find having a tidy house leaves my mind free to find joy in everything else.

After you've done the slog for... An hour a day? Why even exist

I mean each to her own but I don't really trust tidy people

(You would have a canary if you could see my cosy mess)

Gosh yeah you’re right, my life is entirely pointless because my house is tidy. My career, my 3 wonderful children, my lovely friends, my hobbies… worth nothing, due to having a tidy house. Thank you for helping me to see the light.

GreenTurtles3 · 11/05/2025 22:15

I do love a tidy house but I have a job, 3 little children and a messy husband. Sigh

user593 · 11/05/2025 22:16

Yes, I just mopped the kitchen floor at 10pm!

NoEffingWay · 11/05/2025 22:17

I don’t think an hour is too much, I do stuff whilst dinner is in the oven, or put washing on first thing in the morning so I can put it out before 9am. I’m often emptying bins on my way to somewhere else!

Yeah I just don't think tidy people can experience genuine pleasure

😬 weird

NoEffingWay · 11/05/2025 22:18

I do work full time, have children and a husband who is prone to abandoning his belongings where he sits. 😬
