Anyone else just love a clean and tidy house?

In my youth and when I first lived out of home I was a messy sod, and I didn’t seem to notice at all. I’ve just spent the last few hours tidying and setting things up for next week. The washing and ironing are done, the house is freshly hoovered, a candle is lit. Food shopping done, work bag packed- you get the picture!

It didn’t happen overnight but I gradually seemed to realise a) I was living in a grotty house and b) if I keep on top of things, it’s no more than an hour a day plus a bit more at weekends to live in a house that is always ‘guest ready’.

I fear I have officially reached middle age 😂

@Fragmentedbrainwhen you say pleasure, what do you mean? I have a busy social life, exercise, work, go out to the pub most weekends. I’m not sat crying over a clean bathroom!

Officially jealous!

I try to keep it tidy, but most weeks fail miserably.

We have too much "stuff" and I need to do a proper declutter and sort out.

NoEffingWay · 11/05/2025 22:27

@Icanflyhighsqueezed in a tip run today and it feels so good to get rid of the crap! We have no storage as it’s a fairly small house so we can’t hang on to anything that’s not needed. I am brutal these days…I think I’m turning into my mother 😂

No I absolutely love living in a shit tip.

NoEffingWay · 11/05/2025 22:30

@OverpricedCupcakegenuine question-does it bother you at all, even if people are coming over?

I’m at my most relaxed when my flat is clean and tidy. I’m disabled and always do something whenever I stand up( wipe worktops when kettle is on for example)
Yesterday My DS1 came over( he’s a domestic god!)and he hoovered and scrubbed my floors, spot washed my chairs and put outside to dry. Helped me hang 2 loads of laundry out and took 2 bin bags round to bin shed for me( neighbours do this for me too)
The furthest I’ve been today is the kettle!

Loki64 · 11/05/2025 22:53

I absolutely love this.
Ive spent the day cleaning top to bottom, done all my meal prep and lunches for work for the week, bathed the dog, fresh bedding, the candles on and a bubble bath, bliss. Saying this i do have ocd and cant cope in a messy house or unorganisation.

saltnvinegarhulahoops · 11/05/2025 22:54

we have a cleaner once every two weeks. She’s fantastic. Coming home from work to the dog fur gone, kids crap put away and sparkling surfaces is actual bliss.

mildlysweaty · 11/05/2025 22:55

Me. Calms my mind!

ballroomblue · 11/05/2025 23:16

I hate people calling in without notice but when we moved house a few years ago the chances of that increased. As a result, we live much tidier than in our previous home where there was practically no chance of any unexpected callers. I much prefer living like this.

FoxChops · 11/05/2025 23:22

@Fragmentedbrainand weirdly, I don’t think that messy people in dirty houses can experience much pleasure either tbh!

RosesAndHellebores · 11/05/2025 23:29

I spend about an hour a day ensuring everything is tidy and everything is ready and organised. Dishwasher emptied, kitchen counters wiped, laundry washed, hung, folded and put away, cushions plumped, etc.

My cleaner comes on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Ilovecleaning · 12/05/2025 17:46

A clean and tidy house is so relaxing. A couple of posters suggest it’s joyless or that clean and tidy people have empty lives. Tbh I think they’re wind-up merchants and just being provocative.

BethDuttonYeHaw · 12/05/2025 17:47

Yes.

I achieve this about once a year for a fee days before Christmas.

socks1107 · 12/05/2025 17:54

Yes I do! I do this every Saturday first thing and then go about my weekend! I do a mini clean Wednesday after work I just love it as I can relax when things are clean and tidy

AgnesX · 12/05/2025 17:57

I love an immaculate house. Especially when someone else does it.

The only time I take any pleasure in doing it myself is Christmas eve.

mathanxiety · 12/05/2025 18:10

I love it. I'm the woman you'll find doing the Christmas Day washing up at midnight just so I can wake up the next morning to a spotless kitchen.

mathanxiety · 12/05/2025 18:16

Fragmentedbrain · 11/05/2025 22:17

Yeah I just don't think tidy people can experience genuine pleasure

What makes you think that?

I find pleasure in taking care of my home. I love knowing everything is in its place. I love being able to spontaneously have someone over or bake something without having to clear a patch on the kitchen counter first.

MrsPlantagenet · 12/05/2025 18:18

I absolutely love the downstairs at least, to be tidy and clean every day. Any mess makes me twitchy.

@Procrastination4I had to work so hard to get into a routine. I remember going round to a friends house and just being astonished by how tidy it was. When I got home it seemed to look even worse than I remembered and I had a word with myself! My big thing is always emptying bins every day (there are waste paper baskets in each room), doing a load of washing every day, hoovering every day and cleaning the kitchen after every meal. It seems to keep the grot away, and leaves room for the bigger jobs. I am partial to a bit a lot of procrastination!

Always get rid of the dishes, and wipe down the worktops before bed so you wake up to a clean a tidy kitchen. So worth it ...

Blobbitymacblob · 12/05/2025 18:35

I love a clean and tidy house, but I struggle to keep it that way. I can’t seem to find a good balance between the constant jumping up and down and stressing, and sitting back with a cup of tea, looking around and wondering wtf happened.

Laundry, dishes, and a tidy round every day, bathrooms, cleaning and hoovering every week. But it’s vanishingly rare that it’s lovely and all clean and tidy at one moment - only before guests are about to arrive for a party when we’re all holding our breath.

Beautifulweeds · 12/05/2025 18:36

I love a clean and tidy house and if I lived on my own it would be! Have a big clean up then rest of the family piles their shit everywhere, within minutes it's a mess again sigh 😕

FrenchandSaunders · 12/05/2025 18:39

I wfh and I can’t concentrate on work if the house is messy. Don’t mind a bit of dust but things need to be put away.

Saying that our DCs have left home now and I kind of miss their mess.

lonelynessworksforme · 12/05/2025 19:05

My home is spotless at all times.
Living at home when i was younger i just hated it was always a mess always clutter.
A stuffy feel to it.
I like space and counter sides clear.
My kitchen i only have a kettle on show whereas growing up mums kitchen was just full of crap every drawer and cupboard was full of something.
Im a minimalist.

TaliaTalia · 12/05/2025 19:08

I love it. It’s my preferred state. Tidy, minimal clutter, spotlessly clean.
But I share my home with five children and a husband who are the polar opposite. The amount of cups, plates, glasses I collect from the living room daily (AFTER I’ve forced them to join me in a tidy up) makes me think they just genuinely don’t see mess. They all also love stuff. My 13 year old son is always bringing me back cheesy ornaments he’s found at jumble sales or charity shops as ‘gifts.’ He’s such a sweetheart and I don’t think I’ve got long till he turns into a typical grumpy teen so I’m trying to savour it but I long for empty surfaces 😂
