Anyone else just love a clean and tidy house?

In my youth and when I first lived out of home I was a messy sod, and I didn’t seem to notice at all. I’ve just spent the last few hours tidying and setting things up for next week. The washing and ironing are done, the house is freshly hoovered, a candle is lit. Food shopping done, work bag packed- you get the picture!

It didn’t happen overnight but I gradually seemed to realise a) I was living in a grotty house and b) if I keep on top of things, it’s no more than an hour a day plus a bit more at weekends to live in a house that is always ‘guest ready’.

I fear I have officially reached middle age 😂

It’s how I like to live so I’m with you op.
Not to say that mess doesn’t pop up here and there but we all make sure things are put away regularly and generally my house is clean and tidy and looking nice.
I don’t spend hours cleaning but I probably spend half an hour a day doing something housework related, 5 minutes cleaning and drying the kitchen sides while I’m clearing up after lunch and again after dinner, hoovering after dinner, clearing the post daily takes about 30 seconds, putting the shoes on the shoe racks to stop them accumulating in a pile by the front door, keeping on top of the washing is about 10 minutes a day of actual work, just little bits that all contribute to the running of a clean and tidy house.
And everyone chips in with these jobs, it’s not all on me.
I hate mess and clutter and dirt and don’t find it relaxing at all. I’m much happier in a clean and tidy environment.

MidoriNoRingo · 12/05/2025 19:14

My mental health is massively affected by mess. I can’t function in a messy house. I try to keep on top of it but unfortunately my husband and kids aren’t bothered by mess and it gets all crazy faster than I can keep on top of it.

Nannyfannybanny · 12/05/2025 19:23

The happiest person I know (having lunch with her tomorrow) she's almost 70 with a disabled son,her place is immaculate. I had 4 kids worked ft nights, huge garden, animals chicken. I clean as I go. I also grew up in a very messy house,my late father wouldn't let my lovely late mum put anything away or touch anything. No friends were allowed in..I get out of the shower, tidy the bathroom before I leave it. I was hoping for a whole thread without someone saying hoovering!

Yeah I just don't think tidy people can experience genuine pleasure

Now there’s a sweeping generalisation from someone who wants to justify living in squalor.

cardibach · 12/05/2025 19:27

I quite like one. But not enough to spend the hours it needs - I’ve more enjoyable things to do. Kitchen and bathroom are hygienic. I clean the rest sporadically. Quite happy. I’m 60, for reference.

Rollofrockandsand · 12/05/2025 19:29

I have a clean and tidy house, always have, always will. I was brought up in one, it’s my default. I can’t imagine living in a mess. I’ve finished dinner, all washing up done and put away, dishwasher on, surfaces wiped, candle burning, cushions plumped, tv on. Perfect

cardibach · 12/05/2025 19:31

RosesAndHellebores · 11/05/2025 23:29

I spend about an hour a day ensuring everything is tidy and everything is ready and organised. Dishwasher emptied, kitchen counters wiped, laundry washed, hung, folded and put away, cushions plumped, etc.

My cleaner comes on Tuesdays and Fridays.

An hour every day and a cleaner twice a week? Just how messy are you? I can’t imagine spending that much time and money on tidiness…

We aren't in the least bit messy. I came in this evening and emptied the dishwasher, hung a load of wet washing, wiped down the kitchen worktops (we have cats) got the dinner on, sorted some recycling, hung up my jacket, emptied and washed the kitchen caddy. Took about an hour.

The cleaner vacuums, mops, generally cleans and irons.

MananaPenelope · 12/05/2025 20:02

Yes, I find it soothing. I don’t have a lot of ornaments or clutter.

I don’t do much really though tbh, we’ve got loads of storage and are out at work, uni or sixth form.

My cleaner now comes for two hours twice a week instead of three hours in one go. She now changes beds, she is literally an 😇 in disguise.

We basically clean the kitchen when we use it and put things away. I might vacuum the downstairs at the weekend if necessary. It stays quite tidy and clean generally.

Changeyourlifes · 12/05/2025 20:05

Spending an hour a day cleaning is such a waste of your life though, that’s loads of times.

i just try to make sure everything is in its place by the end of the day and vital surfaces are wiped (ie rooms visitors may enter), dishwasher loaded, bins ready to be taken out, and any dirty laundry away. Takes me like 10-20 mins just before bed.

Kellywiththelegs · 12/05/2025 20:06

Yes I’m the same, love love a clean and tidy home, my favourite part of cleaning is when I do the finishing touches, some new fresh flowers on the island, cushions and throws plumped up and then light a candle or diffuser with a scent of the season, bliss!

Didntask · 12/05/2025 20:07

I can't relax if my house is messy it needs cleaning. I clean my house a lot. It makes me happy.

BatchCookBabe · 12/05/2025 20:09

How could you not love a clean and tidy house?! Smile I love it. I get a rug doctor and do the carpets and furniture every 3-4 months. The place smells gorgeous! I 'blitz' the house once a month too, a good day, just scrubbing and cleaning and dusting and polishing and hoovering. Every room! I do do quicker cleans, and dust/polish/hoover 3-4 times a week in between though.

Devilmentpleassure · 12/05/2025 20:10

Yes with bells on.

foghead · 12/05/2025 20:11

I just can’t get on top of mine right now!
but yes, I love it.

Lul00 · 12/05/2025 20:13

I love a tidy house which makes my messy house much more stressful. I have four small children and not enough space and it just feels so cluttered all the time x

Rosesanddaffs · 12/05/2025 20:17

@NoEffingWay I love a clean and tidy house but some days it’s exhausting as there’s mess waiting for me and it’s not even my mess!

I find having things in order calming and can’t think straight if it’s messy, I’ve always been like this, way before these decluttering programmes and cleaning influencers.

menopausalfart · 12/05/2025 20:18

My house is very clean but, I've been diagnosed OCD. I have it under control as I don't clean constantly, but I absolutely hate mess.

StarTwirl · 12/05/2025 20:23

My home would be more immaculate without teens living in it. There is clutter that’s the DC well DD mainly.

I always clean up after cooking, wipe surfaces, chuck dishes in dishwasher, ajways keep on top of washing and drying. Keep bathroom clean.

Hoover and mop floors but not daily, no pets and we are a no shoes indoors household.
Always empty the bins obviously.

I’m constantly clearing up and cleaning but not overly so so my home is never immaculate
My DM house is immaculate. Not a speck of dust or chipped skirting to be seen. I find it very calming but I can’t keep up to that level in my own home

I love a clean and tidy house.. but not enough to clean or tidy it.

This is me

Arraminta · 12/05/2025 20:38

I grew up in a very beautiful, immaculately clean and tidy home. We had a cleaner but my Mum would also Hoover and dust every day, too. To be honest, it always felt rather soulless, like a show home. I didn't want that for my children.

I wanted a family home that was clean and tidy, but not obsessively so. I wanted a home that was presentable, attractively furnished and decorated, but also welcoming.

Now that I can't really see the point of. Ours gets a weekly surface clean, bathrooms done thoroughly, I.keep the kitchen clean. Have the carpets cleaned every few years.

Walker1178 · 12/05/2025 20:46

Enjoy the moment!

I love the satisfaction of a fully clean and tidy house, in reality we’re pretty much always 5-10 minutes away from it. DP is one of these guys that always seems to have something in his hands, you can pretty much work out how he’s spent his day by looking around at the things he’s picked up/put down.

Flossy1985 · 12/05/2025 20:52

I love a clean kitchen the rest of my home maybe a little messy because of 7month old and I get tired but my kitchen is spotless!! Always ready to prepare food or bake ❤️

Nannyfannybanny · 12/05/2025 21:02

Weekly surface clean,yuck.. what about after cooking, serving meals
.I have dogs to feed, definitely need to clean work surfaces several times a day..my kitchen is open plan at the end of my living room, I don't want to see mess, dirty dishes..I don't have a lot of storage anymore.. a place for everything etc
