Is Prosecco an acceptable gift?

Just that. I have no idea what’s currently in or out of fashion for a smallish present.

The recipient is definitely someone who drinks alcohol.

All opinions gratefully received, thank you!

I give prosecco as a generic token gift all the time, they can regift it if they don't want it.

Cynic17 · 10/05/2025 20:54

No. Most of it tastes disgusting. If anyone gives me Prosecco I have to find a way to offload it.
Just get a decent bottle of wine (£15+) instead.
Or try something "foodie" instead - do you have a good farm shop near you?

So you give people something they probably don't want, and then expect them to embarrass themselves by passing it on to someone else who doesn't want it? That's not a gift, in any way.

It’s fine. As PP said, it can be regifted if it’s not to their taste.

I think buying wine is riskier as some people are solely red or white. Also wine has such a range of grapes too. I like red but there’s many a red I wouldn’t drink, even if a ‘nice’ red.

To be fair, they might pass it on to someone who does like it….

If I ever get white I have a friend I pass it on to. It’s nice and I appreciate the thought from the person who gave it to me.

No harm done.

NoThankYouSis · 10/05/2025 20:59

I like it, you can gift it to me if you like!

dogcatkitten · 10/05/2025 21:01

Champagne seems more special.

pandora206 · 10/05/2025 21:01

I think it's a great gift for a wine drinker. The Freixenet sparkling wines make a lovely present.

Oh get over yourself! Lots of people do like prosecco, or would at least be happy to have it in the wine rack for a bbq etc. It's a perfectly valid gift for e.g your hairdresser's birthday or to thanks your admin support at work for a hard week or suchlike

Delatron · 10/05/2025 21:16

No - I know lots of people (myself included) that don’t like prosecco. Either get a nice bottle or wine or champagne, if money is an issue a Cremant would be better and still reasonable cost.

Beautifulweeds · 10/05/2025 21:21

Always delighted to get a bottle of prosecco, as all of my friends are. Those who dont like it can regift.

Much prefer this to red wine, which is given straight my DH and disappointment I have to go and get prosecco lol 😆

HaddyAbrams · 10/05/2025 21:28

I hate it personally. And yes I could regift it, but that means I didn't actually get a gift.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 10/05/2025 21:30

What’s the occasion? For a birthday or a congratulations on your new job type gift it’s fine, for a baby shower or wedding not so much (unless given with something else).

TheHerboriste · 10/05/2025 21:32

I prefer real champagne; prosecco is sort of sickly.

vinnabawl · 10/05/2025 21:32

Love Prosecco! Much prefer it to a box of chocs or flowers or food items I’ll never eat.

ArtichokeAardvark · 10/05/2025 21:39

Hate prosecco, and lots of other people do too. It's always telling when the bottle tombola at our local fete is 50% prosecco, everyone donates it with a sigh of relief. Go for cremant which is closer to taste to champagne (it's the same grapes but made in Burgundy or the Loire, so can't be called champagne) but isn't any more expensive than prosecco.

SteamLover · 10/05/2025 21:39

It’s quite a safe gift I’d say. Most people drink it.

Obviously it’s a small token gift not some big extravagant gesture. I’m always happy to receive it as long as it’s not the very cheap stuff. Aldi and Lidl do Cremant at £8.99 which I prefer to Prosecco but some people don’t know what it is. Proseccos is safer.

A lovely gift. Get a good one, not a cheapy one.

hopsalong · 10/05/2025 21:46

Not in my book. Find it a sad gift. No real thought, and if I have to drink it I spend the whole time thinking how frothy and sweet and flavourless it is. You can buy much better white wine for the same price. Or just do it properly and get a bottle of champagne. The Waitrose own brand one is good and about £25, less when they have a sale. Champagne is always a brilliant gift.

Or get a nice box of chocolates.

JDM625 · 10/05/2025 21:46

Any food/drink can be so individual because we all have different tastes. Personally, I hate any form of bubbly wines. So prosecco and even the most expensive champagnes I've had- I can't stand.

Can you find out more about what the recipient drinks/likes?

What snark! “Perfectly valid for one’s hairdressers birthday” 😂😂😂

noblegiraffe · 10/05/2025 21:48

I bloody love a bottle of prosecco. I don't drink wine so the people suggesting that as a better gift would be totally wrong for me. Wine would be a shit gift.

thinkfast · 10/05/2025 21:49

Prosecco is a bit of a sad gift. If you’re looking for a generic gift in that price range, I’d go for either a bottle of cremant, a bottle of wine, a box of chocolates, a nice tin of posh biscuits, or flowers.

TeaandHobnobs · 10/05/2025 21:50

I agree with @Delatron that Cremant is a better alternative - around £10-£15 per bottle

DilkushaKitchen · 10/05/2025 21:54

I think cremant is more current and cava is always lovely - but as other have said if you can stretch to proper champagne then it makes a lovely present.
