Is Prosecco an acceptable gift?

Just that. I have no idea what’s currently in or out of fashion for a smallish present.

The recipient is definitely someone who drinks alcohol.

All opinions gratefully received, thank you!

I’m a bit of a snob re wine and would not drink Prosecco. Cremant is much better, or even Cava if you don’t want to spend much.

As a gift I’d be very happy - I like getting nice presents as it’s nice the people think about you!

I don’t like it but my best mate does so I’d take it to hers next time we had a get together

it’s the thought that counts for me

Thank you - I’m hoping that’s how the recipient will see it!

Make it a Cremant instead - it’s a bit more expensive and much nicer

Why not? It comes in the same style of bottle. It's widely known as being similar to Champagne, but without the high price that is for the name and perceived exclusivity alone.

I drink Cava and Cremant, rarely Champagne or Prosecco.

Maybe most people are just more knowledgable than me!

Prosecco is absolutely fine. Suggestions of champagne instead 🙄 presumably if the OP is asking it’s because they don’t know the person well enough to get them a personalised gift in which case spending £25 on a bottle of champagne is ridiculous. As a generic gift for someone you don’t know well but want to give a token gift to it’s perfect. So is a box of chocolates.

I’ve been given many many bottles of wine and boxes of chocolates in my life that weren’t to my taste (ex teacher!) and I’ve never had a sense of dread that I’d have to offload it, or severe disappointment. I’ve just regifted them, given them to my husband or my dad, donated them to a tombola oe whatever. It’s really no big deal.

Thank you - you’ve got it in one!

A bottle of olive oil

Wouldn’t that be a little odd though? I would imagine the recipient would have some already if they use it and it lasts a while.

I’d be thrilled with Prosecco as a gift, yes! Funny how different everyone is, saying that I wouldn’t give it to eg the neighbours who are older, or to a real ‘foodie’ who I’d guess to be more about a certain type of wine for example!

Yes everyone’s replies are interesting.

I have so many old bottles of prosecco that I've been given and not drank, they at least keep the wine rack looking full.

If it's a new job I'd much rather have a nice new notebook or planner

Not a new job - but I’ll keep that idea in mind for future use, thanks. A lovely notebook is always useful.

It's rarely obvious what you've spent anyway. I stock up when the supermarkets have the 25% off when you buy 6 bottles offers and buy what is also on offer.

So the Cremant that could have a shelf price of £12 in one supermarket could have cost me less than £7 because I bought it from another supermarket that had it on offer for £9 and was doing the 25% off deal.

OP, kindly, it sounds like you're overthinking it and as long as the recipient is not the type of Mumsnetter who is offended by everything, I'm sure that your gift of Prosecco, Cava, Cremant or whatever other bottle of fizz that catches your eye in the supermarket will be warmly received.

Thank you, yes I am probably overthinking it.

Fortunately the recipient does not strike me as being perpetually offended!

There's olive oil and there's olive oil. However, unless it's a small bottle, it will cost more than a bottle of mass market supermarket Prosecco.

More the sort of thing to buy a foodie I guess?

I recently bought myself one of these bottles.

Much like wine, there is olive oil and then there is olive oil. Different types for different purposes and, different qualities and flavours. I am not suggesting you buy one for this gift, as it was more than a bog standard bottle of champagne can cost and a lot more than Prosecco. But, I will go and get it refilled at our local deli where they sell first press olive oil decanted into whatever bottle you take along.

For prosecco I would go for this: (Waitrose sell it)

Hi, I found this on Ocado and thought you’d like to see it: https://www.ocado.com/products/la-gioiosa-brut-prosecco-valdobbiadene-docg-superiore-millesimato-320713011

Prosecco is cheap and nasty. Buy a posh cheese instead.

I agree these are lovely drinks but 3-4x the cost of a bottle of Prosecco. The op clearly doesn’t want to spend that much!

That’s right, although it’s nice to know for future presents, thanks.

It really doesn’t matter as much as people are making out.
It’s a perfectly inoffensive gift, don’t overthink it.
And don’t take the advice of the poster who suggested a lump of cheese instead…

Is it a long time since you've had a supermarket prosecco? I like prosecco (and many other things that would have most mumsnetters thinking I'm scum I'm sure!) and usually but the cheaper end of what Asda or Tesco have unless it's a special occasion. I don't think I've ever come across one with a screw top, and we both like dry drinks and rarely find them sweet.

I think it's fine as a present, would be happy to receive and have given in similar circumstances. Yes some people wouldn't like it, if you don't know the recipients tastes, but that also applies to literally everything else mentioned on this thread. They also might not like and have to regift red wine, white wine, chocolate, olive oil (!)... I think most of my friends would happily receive and drink a bottle of prosecco.

If they are on offer or you can stretch to it I do get the frexienet ones sometimes for gifts as they look prettier, but in answer to the person saying frexienet sparkling wines are nicer than prosecco, ummm they are prosecco. Or at least some of them are (the ones in pretty bottle I was thinking of). They do other wines too I suppose.

Thank you - I’ll look up the frexienet ones.

Sadly it's fine. I don't get why its vile stuff.

Prrsonally I would get a bottle of vine if you can't stretch to real champagne.

I didnt vote as none of your options worked.for me.

Not sure if they prefer red or white though.

You can get Freixenet cava and Freixenet prosecco.
The prosecco is revolting but comes in a pretty bottle. The cava is much nicer but doesn't.

Cheese!!!!!🤣

The advantage of cheese over Prosecco is that it doesn’t taste like warm sick even when chilled.

I rarely drink any more, and when I do it's vodka or a cocktail, but I would still appreciate a gift of prosecco. In fact, a friend gave me one recently when I had a bbq. It'll likely stay in the larder until I have another gathering and then I can bring it out for those who do like it (and save the bottle, because it's pretty 😁)

Don't overthink it. Get a bottle of prosecco (or cava, if that's the way you want to go) and put it in a bottle gift bag.

If the person you give it to is well-mannered, they'll appreciate the thought no matter what drink they prefer. If they're ill-mannered, it won't matter what you get, because whatever it is it will likely be 'wrong' somehow.

Thank you
