Is Prosecco an acceptable gift?

Just that. I have no idea what’s currently in or out of fashion for a smallish present.

The recipient is definitely someone who drinks alcohol.

All opinions gratefully received, thank you!

I don’t think it would be obvious I hadn’t overspent though.

It's rarely obvious what you've spent anyway. I stock up when the supermarkets have the 25% off when you buy 6 bottles offers and buy what is also on offer.

So the Cremant that could have a shelf price of £12 in one supermarket could have cost me less than £7 because I bought it from another supermarket that had it on offer for £9 and was doing the 25% off deal.

OP, kindly, it sounds like you're overthinking it and as long as the recipient is not the type of Mumsnetter who is offended by everything, I'm sure that your gift of Prosecco, Cava, Cremant or whatever other bottle of fizz that catches your eye in the supermarket will be warmly received.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 11/05/2025 07:37

People suggesting olive oil- that is a CRAP present! " ohvthank you- some cooking fat, how nice"

Bjorkdidit · 11/05/2025 07:41

There's olive oil and there's olive oil. However, unless it's a small bottle, it will cost more than a bottle of mass market supermarket Prosecco.

Yes probably but I suppose it depends what for

Riverswimmers · 11/05/2025 07:41

Buy a bottle of Cremant instead. Nicer and seems a bit more special. All the supermarkets do a version.

JohnAmendAll · 11/05/2025 07:48

Cynic17 · 10/05/2025 20:56

So you give people something they probably don't want, and then expect them to embarrass themselves by passing it on to someone else who doesn't want it? That's not a gift, in any way.

It's what most people do.

Not sure how it would be embarrassing? How would recipient No 2 know it was being "re-gifted"?

Dopeyandgrumpy · 11/05/2025 08:16

This one looks nice for a gift and is tasty too:

The Kylie ones are pretty bottles too.

I’m after something that is nice but that I obviously haven’t spent too much on, as that wouldn’t be appropriate in this circumstance.

Ok - so get a bottle of Cremant instead. Or a nice Cava.

Delatron · 11/05/2025 08:20

I think a bottle of fancy olive oil is a lovely present!

I think it's a great gift for a wine drinker. The Freixenet sparkling wines make a lovely present.

I think they are better than Prosecco

Viviennemary · 11/05/2025 08:24

It's vile stuff. So make sure the person likes it.

getahhtmapub · 11/05/2025 08:28

get Nyetimber or Chapel Down instead. English sparkling wines and absolutely delicious and a bit special. Prosecco is a bit ‘own brand cola’.

If you can’t stretch to that then Cremant. Cremant is basically champagne not made in the Champagne region. Much is made within metres of the Champagne vineyards.

Nyetimber is made Champagnoise in a location with Champagne type terroir and is really excellent

Alwaystired23 · 11/05/2025 08:49

I don't know, I use to think so, but I had so many as presents for my 40th, I was overrun. I don't drink enough of it really, plus it gives me heartburn. I ended up giving a lot away. So because of that I don't rend to give as a gift anymore.

I agree these are lovely drinks but 3-4x the cost of a bottle of Prosecco. The op clearly doesn’t want to spend that much!

TubeScreamer · 11/05/2025 09:08

Cremant rather than Prosecco if you think they like sparking wine.

mine always get donated as raffle prizes

TubeScreamer · 11/05/2025 09:09

Fwiw I think olive oil makes fantastic gift

AngelsWithSilverWings · 11/05/2025 09:10

I'd always be happy with a bottle but if someone knows me really well they know I prefer Cremant. I always buy that rather than Prosecco as a small gift for someone. It's slightly more expensive than Prosseco but as good as most cheaper champagnes I think.

Simplelobsterhat · 11/05/2025 09:20

SleepingisanArt · 10/05/2025 21:59

There's prosecco and there's prosecco - just like cremant, cava and champagne (oh and English sparkling wine).

A proper prosecco is made in the same way as champagne, is not at all sweet (although you can get demi-sec and sec just like in champagne), has a proper cork stopper, and is bottled at the vineyard.

Most cheap supermarket prosecco is mass produced in large tanks and the bubbles are made using co2 like in a soda stream! Can be bottled anywhere (including the UK) and often has a screw top. They are often sweet.

I love a good (preferably organic) prosecco (can't afford to drink my favourite champagne every time I fancy bubbles!)

Is it a long time since you've had a supermarket prosecco? I like prosecco (and many other things that would have most mumsnetters thinking I'm scum I'm sure!) and usually but the cheaper end of what Asda or Tesco have unless it's a special occasion. I don't think I've ever come across one with a screw top, and we both like dry drinks and rarely find them sweet.

I think it's fine as a present, would be happy to receive and have given in similar circumstances. Yes some people wouldn't like it, if you don't know the recipients tastes, but that also applies to literally everything else mentioned on this thread. They also might not like and have to regift red wine, white wine, chocolate, olive oil (!)... I think most of my friends would happily receive and drink a bottle of prosecco.

If they are on offer or you can stretch to it I do get the frexienet ones sometimes for gifts as they look prettier, but in answer to the person saying frexienet sparkling wines are nicer than prosecco, ummm they are prosecco. Or at least some of them are (the ones in pretty bottle I was thinking of). They do other wines too I suppose.

Popquorn · 11/05/2025 09:22

I personally can’t stand Prosecco and have no idea why it became an acceptable gift beloved by many - but lots of people appreciate it.

Dustmylemonlies · 11/05/2025 09:24

I would be perfectly happy to receive Prosecco.

Snackpocket · 11/05/2025 09:24

The Sainsbury’s taste the difference Prosecco is really nice OP. They do a rose one too which is also good.

DonnaSueWeloveyou · 11/05/2025 09:45

Bjorkdidit · 11/05/2025 07:00

Cava costs the same as Prosecco and you wouldn't be at risk of offending them if they're the type of Mumsnetter who seems to have mistaken Prosecco for a bottle of piss.

Thank you, I will have a look at Cava too.

Sadly it's fine. I don't get why its vile stuff.

Prrsonally I would get a bottle of vine if you can't stretch to real champagne.

I didnt vote as none of your options worked.for me.

Shodan · 11/05/2025 10:01

I rarely drink any more, and when I do it's vodka or a cocktail, but I would still appreciate a gift of prosecco. In fact, a friend gave me one recently when I had a bbq. It'll likely stay in the larder until I have another gathering and then I can bring it out for those who do like it (and save the bottle, because it's pretty 😁)

Don't overthink it. Get a bottle of prosecco (or cava, if that's the way you want to go) and put it in a bottle gift bag.

If the person you give it to is well-mannered, they'll appreciate the thought no matter what drink they prefer. If they're ill-mannered, it won't matter what you get, because whatever it is it will likely be 'wrong' somehow.
