Do you hang your pants on the washing line?

I’m very fortunate to live in an ex/council property and we all have big gardens with those old fashioned high up pulley washing lines.

I also have a rotary line just because it’s a bit quicker and easier getting stuff out/in.

I peg my pants on the rotary because they aren’t so visible. Baring in mind my pants are just bog standard black or white bikini briefs.

NDN today has got a whole load of glorious, pastel and yooooooge pants fluttering on the high line. Hoisted for half of the village to admire. Think of the pants yer nan maybe wore in the 80s.

i don’t know if she’s a brazen hussy or am I just a massive prude.

Why wouldn’t I hang my pants out? I imagine my neighbours have better things to do with their time than stare at my pants flapping in the breeze and if they don’t, then I hope they bring them some joy.

MummaMummaMumma · 10/05/2025 19:55

You sound like my mum! 🤣
She's horrified that I hang out my underwear.
The hooooooj comment is just rude.

PyongyangKipperbang · 10/05/2025 20:01

Wasnt there a thread on here a while back where the OP was asked by her NDN not to hang her underwear on the line as she didnt think it appropriate that her husband could see it.

I just put ours on the bench which is sort of under the wall so they can't be seen.
I would be embarrassed to put them on the line but also don't have enough line space to be hanging smalls.

IShotTheDeputyItWasMe · 10/05/2025 20:11

You're a prude. 🤣
Or I'm a sluttern.
I wouldn't put sexy knickers on (not that I have any these days) but bog standard pants go on. Admittedly they go on the lower bit by the fence, not the bit that has the stick to lift it high up.
My mum hates that I put underwear on the line. I don't have a tumble dryer and I figure that knickers on the living room radiator is worse! 🤣

Mummyoflittledragon · 10/05/2025 20:12

Yes. I put ours on the inside of the rotary dryer to partially disguise them.

CoolPlayer · 10/05/2025 20:12

No I would have in past times and thought nothing of it but I go for the biggest comfy pants I can find now so I’d rather keep them hidden 😂

Eldermillennialmum · 10/05/2025 20:14

You're being ridiculous. Why shouldn't people peg their underwear on the line?

FNDandme · 10/05/2025 20:32

They usually get hung on a socktupus here! Mortally embarrassed when DM helped with pegging washing up last week and she pegged knickers up 2 each like flags 🫣

PyongyangKipperbang · 10/05/2025 20:43

My mother is as prudish as they come and her pants go on the long line in full view of the neighbours!

She says "I like to let the air get to my gusset!"

It was something my late Grandmother would say when her older neighbour (1940's ish) would comment in disgust that she hung her "smalls" on the line.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 10/05/2025 20:45

Goodness, if I didn’t know this post was on MN today, I’d have thought it was from a Hyacinth Bucket type in the 1950s!!

RightOnTheEdge · 10/05/2025 20:46

I hang mine on the inside of the octopus thing, then hang my socks around the outside.
Or I hang them on the inside of the rotary and the clothes on the outside.
They are just the supermarket ones from a pack though and sometimes a bit scruffy but comfy, so I do feel a bit self conscious about them flapping about in public.

CheeseAndChipsAndCurry · 10/05/2025 20:46

All my underwear goes on the line. Even my huge period pants. I like them to be air dried where possible.

Beetlebumz · 10/05/2025 20:47

No I don’t I put them on an airer in a non overlooked bit of the garden 🪴

ohtowinthelottery · 10/05/2025 20:48

When DH and I were travelling around Europe for 2 months last year, we had to do our washing in our accomodation. We stayed in an apartment in one Italian city and the only place to peg the washing was on the lines over the front of the balcony overhanging the street. So our smalls were on display to everyone who walked down the street. I was terrified of dropping a pair of pants on someone's head as I pegged them out!

I have a rotary line at home and peg everything on there.

zenai · 10/05/2025 20:53

When I was doing some stages of the Camino, I often had to dry my knickers and bras by hanging them off the backpack. My pack was like a clothes line, but others had the same idea. Great hilarity comparing sizes and colours on the pitstops. But I can tell you it was the last thing I was worried about.

At home I'm a bit more discreet for some reason. On the octopus thinggy on the rotary line nearest the wall is the smalls spot here.

My dear MIL, a proper working class northern woman, was absolutely horrified the first time I put the washing out at her house- you’d have thought I’d butchered her cat. Turns out your ‘smalls’ NEVER go outside where the neighbours might see, I didn’t know this information but since that day (I would’ve been about 15) I haven’t done it again. Even in the privacy of a garden that isn’t overlooked.

The first time I got a fork out to eat a slice of cake too, unfortunately I couldn’t be trained out of this so now I just feel deep shame about it.

user2848502016 · 10/05/2025 21:14

Yes I peg bras and knickers out, I would think my neighbours have better things to do than look at my underwear on the line, everyone wears it!

Jane958 · 11/05/2025 07:19

I haven't had any kind of outside washing line since about 1991, so no.
Things are either dried in the dryer or on a drying rack, in very hot weather, or hung over radiators.
I actually would not hang anything outside to dry where I now live, as the chances are more than high that they would get bombed by the many birds flying around.
Also, I prefer tumbled clothes as they are softer and need less (if any) ironing.
Furthermore, where I live (EU) you are not allowed to hang washing out on a Sunday, so that is another good reason not to.
However, the real reason is that, when I was working away from home a lot, I would return on a Friday evening and need to leave again on Sunday afternoon. In that time I had to do any housework required, deal with washing and ironing and mow the lawn. Given weather contstraints, outside drying was not a workable option.

BlondiePortz · 11/05/2025 07:23

I would assume most people wear knickers? What is there to pearl clutch about?

TurnThatLightOn · 11/05/2025 07:26

InMyOpenOnion · 10/05/2025 18:47

I don't but that is mainly because I tend to tumble dry pants and socks due to the volume in a family wash.

Same. I wouldn't have enough pegs.

Meadowfinch · 11/05/2025 07:27

Christ, you worry too much.

Everything goes on my washing line if the weather is fine. I don't even think about it. Why would anyone be interested in your pants? 😁

squarepegroudhole · 11/05/2025 07:29

Nope, mine are all tumble dried. Once a week a full wash of pants and socks for four. Loads of them due to sports etc. I’d be there all day hanging them all out. It’s bad enough pairing the socks to put them away.

StarlightLady · 11/05/2025 07:32

Knickers and bras go on the line. Why a big deal? Very similar items, if not identical can be viewed on racks in 3 well known department stores.

There was an exception yesterday, it was warm and l wasn’t wearing any with a long sundress. I suppose that makes me a double hussey! 😎

I really don’t care who sees my clean knickers.

stayathomer · 11/05/2025 07:32

Bras and pants all fluttering in the breeze op, I guess everyone thinks about different things but this to me seems like something that shouldn’t need to be thought about!!
