Do you hang your pants on the washing line?

I’m very fortunate to live in an ex/council property and we all have big gardens with those old fashioned high up pulley washing lines.

I also have a rotary line just because it’s a bit quicker and easier getting stuff out/in.

I peg my pants on the rotary because they aren’t so visible. Baring in mind my pants are just bog standard black or white bikini briefs.

NDN today has got a whole load of glorious, pastel and yooooooge pants fluttering on the high line. Hoisted for half of the village to admire. Think of the pants yer nan maybe wore in the 80s.

i don’t know if she’s a brazen hussy or am I just a massive prude.

I think I would be less inclined to hang out lacy thongs in case I got judged

So what kind of underwear is acceptable? We all wear it. Maybe they think you don’t wear any if you never hang yours out.

333FionaG · 10/05/2025 18:41

I’ve never heard of anything so daft as being afraid of the neighbours seeing your underwear on the washing line! As for mocking the lady who dares to dry her big knickers where everyone can see them - grow up.

I peg my ‘Sloggi knickers’ out on the line but I peg them in the corner because I don’t want the neighbours to get an eye full. 😄

Did I mention her size? Even incredibly slender people can prefer a larger pant.

Don’t get so prickly. It wasn’t aimed at you personally.

I prefer to dry bras and undies inside. I also feel embarrassed if I see other people’s on the line. Not entirely sure why, I guess I’m just particularly private

PoodlesRUs · 10/05/2025 18:42

Prude and kind of an arse tbh.

HarpieDuJour · 10/05/2025 18:44

I would never hang my pants on the washing line. I have a husband to do that for me. I'm sure people notice them because they are both large and brightly coloured (I make them myself, so some are made in several colours, from scraps of fabric). I don't care, and neither does my long-suffering husband.

Oh get a grip.

My Nan was tiny and a size 8 yet she wore big knickers in the 80s. They were almost half the size of her.

Anyhow, I hang my knickers out. I don’t care who sees them, tbh.

Dreamysleepynightysnoozeysnooze · 10/05/2025 18:45

You did go to the trouble of emphasising the size so I think anyone can be forgiven for presuming you were being judgemental about the dress size.

But ok. I think that's enough debating about knickers with strangers on the internet for me!

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 10/05/2025 18:46

Yep, I hang mine out. I don't give a monkey's if people see them. They are only clothes. You see knickers in a shop - they are no different when they are on a washing line. It's not as if people are displaying them on their arses!

InMyOpenOnion · 10/05/2025 18:47

I don't but that is mainly because I tend to tumble dry pants and socks due to the volume in a family wash.

dontpunchtheplasticgorilla · 10/05/2025 18:49

My garden is overlooked by approx 15 houses and a footpath. Although you can't see in the garden from the footpath you can see my washing on the rotary airer thing. Yeah, I hang my pants on the line and I don't give a damn. And if you thought your neighbours were bad, you ain't seen anything yet. Mine are enormous, thick cotton and with a proper waistband- none of that thin elastic stuff that cuts you in half either. Comfort over style anyday.

Quite frankly, anyone who's got a problem about my underwear on the line can get a life.

MaryGreenhill · 10/05/2025 18:51

I have to use M&S period pants permanently , Lichen Sclerosis sufferer have to use a lot of leaking creams , the gusset on them needs a damn good wash and dry , they go out on the line full mast 🤣

EleanorReally · 10/05/2025 18:51

a relative has a high one, and a less high one, and the underwent went on the lower line
i have a wirgly gig and hang on the inner lines
dh uses two pegs on my underwear which is just insulting!

CarrieLite · 10/05/2025 18:54

I thought you were talking about trousers. I thought why wouldn't you hang your pants on the line? Grin You mean knickers. Yes I do. We have a rotary line, so underwear goes at the back and is then hidden by the clothes in the front.

MoistVonL · 10/05/2025 18:54

My knickers are bloody enormous because they have a support panel for an injury in them. I get them from the Orthotics department of the hospital. Hideous things.

Yes, I hang them on the line. They’re wet clothes that need drying and it’s a cheap and practical way to do it.

Ooh, where are those pants from? I hate the cutting elastic.

Here for any top tips on the best full briefs. That's their proper name OP, full briefs, not yuuuge pants. Honestly, you sound a bit like my sexist mum who feels that women should wear style over comfort and therefore only wear tiny pants that lodge in one's crack.

All pants go on the rotary dryer here, visible to about 10 houses and flats.

SilviaSnuffleBum · 10/05/2025 19:00

Definitely a 'me' problem, but I don't hang knickers or bras up outside. I know it's ridiculous, but I dry them indoors, whatever the weather! 🤦🏼‍♀️

WhatMe123 · 10/05/2025 19:01

Yes and I couldn't care less 😂😂😂 they're clean after all 😂😂

Innersy on Amazon. Searching 'innersy women's high waisted underwear' should get you results.

OverpricedCupcake · 10/05/2025 19:04

Yes, on a communal washing line
I'm not embarrassed for other people to know I wear knickers!
I'm sure they do too or the male equivalent.

DinoLil · 10/05/2025 19:05

I hang out my huge M&S knickers. I refer to them as hanging out the bunting to my neighbours if we chat when they're out and the Bridgets are flapping on the line. They do the same now, it's become a neighbour joke as to how long our bunting is!

Of course you did. You said her knickers were HOOOOOOOOOOOJ, so that was clearly a pop at her size. And you sound like the prickly one with your barbed comments towards a neighbour hanging her washing out. It's got nothing to do with you what people hang on their washing line.

Good for your nan for being TINY and having HOOOOOOOOJ knickers. Still doesn't stop the OP being a fat shamer.
