It is a sign of how small my world has become….

…that I’m genuinely proud of myself for having accurately eyeballed 220g of green beans for a recipe.

(I started to doubt myself so checked it with scales - 220g, right on the button).

Feel free to share your tiny accomplishments!

Ha! AND I just accurately guessed a 12 minute timer to within 5 seconds!!

Seriously, why am I proud of this? I have a degree and two post-grads, FFS.

An accurate sense of quantity and time are useful skills!Smile

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 09/05/2025 18:31

Well, thank you, I suppose it is. I think I’m extra-proud because numbers, in any form, are Not My Thing.

One of my favourite games is "guess the time before looking at it"
I'm really good at it! 😆

I am too. Every time I look at a clock it's mirrored numbers. So 14:14 or 14:41 etc. It's a superpower of some sort I'm sure😂

HarrietJonesFlydaleNorth · 09/05/2025 18:38

My superpower is I am really good at cutting things (cake or cheese, usually) into thirds and fifths. 💅🏻

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 09/05/2025 18:43

Thirds and fifths sounds tricky, well done @HarrietJonesFlydaleNorth!

PetaltotheMedal · 09/05/2025 18:43

There is so much shite in the world, we need to take our joy from wherever we can 🧀< couldn't find any green beans so I've gone with one of @HarrietJonesFlydaleNorth 's cheese thirds (fifth? Far too small!)

Frontroomroomjungle · 09/05/2025 18:47

I am the Jack Reacher of naps. I decide I need a 20/40/60 minute snooze and lo, I wake at the designated time.

I could do with this power 😅

Sidebeforeself · 09/05/2025 18:50

I’m really good at hand/ eye coordination. I can fill our coffee machine to the max without spilling a drop.

RNApolymerase · 09/05/2025 18:53

I have the weight of veg superpower. I think it's due to my first job being in a greengrocers.

I wish I could do that! DH pointed out to me just the other day that “Max Level” is an instruction, not a challenge.

I can measure out the water for my breadmaker to within 1-2g (ml is the same in grams)
Edited to say that's before I put the measuring cup back on the scales.

Catnapsallday · 09/05/2025 19:00

I'm not a numbers person either, at least I wasn't when I was in school.
I'm pretty good now though after many years practice of tallying up in my head how much a trip to the supermarket is going to cost me when I get to the cashier.
I guess it's a good exercise in both memory and being able to add things up quickly.
I know what you mean OP about feeling proud of yourself for guessing exactly the weight of something, I've done that myself.
I've begun to be smack on when I've estimated, one example, how much 30 g of Swiss cheese is which I take for the calcium.
Kind of fun when you get it exactly right.
My DH started doing this a few years ago, he would look at the position of the sun and be able to tell me within a minute or two, the exact time of day it was.
He still gets the time right and I wish there was a game show with prizes that I could enter him in.

Same 😂

Well done OP! Tiny accomplishments are the best 😊

GarlicPile · 09/05/2025 19:07

I can guess the breadmaker quantities well enough to produce a decent loaf. Never checked whether I'm recipe-accurate, though, and would expect not <shrug>

I used to be able to tell you how many people were in a room, up to about 2,000. That was due to my job and I couldn't do it now! Same job, I could total a long column of figures at a glance - these days, I have to put everything into Excel.

Another lost professional skill, a bit niche: knowing the weight and type of paper by touch. I tried it the other day with some printer paper and got it right, but was completely flummoxed by a magazine cover. I've got to say this is not a thing I ever need to know these days!

I am great at colours, though. I can match a shade from memory.

PetaltotheMedal · 09/05/2025 19:18

There are words I used to type out without a thought but now I have to google just to check I'm spelling them correctly. I think it's a combination of getting older but also, mainly, not using my brain in the same way because it's all there in front of me, available at the touch of a button, and my brain has lost the ability to work as it once did.

EveryOtherNameTaken · 09/05/2025 19:24

Able to know what direction I'm facing (ie. north, south etc.) 🤷🏼‍♀️

Can predict within 5 seconds when my timer will go off.

Doggymummar · 09/05/2025 19:37

I try to hit 75 litres of water for my shower, unless it's hair wash DAY then it's 100, almost always right

MrsMitford3 · 09/05/2025 19:45

I am ridiculously good at guessing how many steps I have on my fitbit.

I mean guessing like 12,348 and it's 12,340

not sure if I can monetise this fabulous skill but it gives me small wins

Redheadedstepchild · 09/05/2025 19:56

I'm very good at flipping/folding omelettes, making crêpes (because it used to be my job) and other frying pan related skills but I cannot, absolutely cannot for the life of me work out which direction a sound is coming from.

I live in a block of flats and my neighbours have been doing a bit of DIY over the bank holiday weekend but was it the upstairs neighbour, downstairs neighbour, to the side neighbour?

No idea.

Likewise, I could hear music and carousing noises outside last weekend. I thought it was the Portuguese pub reopening after the winter to the left of the flats. Nope. It was a very modest local music festival completely in the opposite direction.

I think I need to have a dog again. They don't seem to suffer from this problem and could help me out with this. Or maybe a pet bat. An echo location support animal.

Jom222 · 09/05/2025 20:06

I can add up incl taxes the amount any shopping basket I filled up and am always almost exactly correct. Nobody is ever appropriately impressed either 😰
