Mine has to be Ariadne Oliver, I switch off completely when she appears and I keep reading the same lines over and over again!

Lucy Angkatell in The Hollow.

HonoriaBulstrode · 09/05/2025 17:39

Oh I like Mrs Oliver. She shows that Agatha had a sense of humour and didn't mind sending herself up a bit.

Hastings can be annoying, but then I think he's supposed to be annoying. Not just dim, but oblivious to his dimness!

Tommy and Tuppence are a bit annoying

I love Ariadne but I suppose not as an actual character in the story and more because Christie's shoehorning her in is sometimes hilarious. There's one where she seems to forget the actual story for a couple of pages and uses Ariadne to complain about critics which I found really funny

Sid9nie · 09/05/2025 17:46

Linnet Doyle nasty selfish woman, very bad friend .

tripleginandtonic · 09/05/2025 17:48

All the ones that say I've sonething to tell you and thrn end up murdered. If you have info tell Marple or Poirot straight away.

IsadoraQuagmire · 09/05/2025 17:49

When I saw the title I immediately thought of Ariadne Oliver.

CatChant · 09/05/2025 17:53

Emily Trefusis in The Sittaford Mystery for sticking with the dim, embezzling, boring drip of a fiancé, and not running off with the enterprising and dashing Daily Wire journalist who proposed to her.

It was as plain as the nose on your face that she would spend her marriage and probably every penny she earned bailing out the embezzler from one crisis after another.

Hatty65 · 09/05/2025 17:53

Another one who immediately thought of Ariadne Oliver, here - and then when @SisterTeatime said 'Lucy Angkatell' thought, 'Oh God - yes!'.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 09/05/2025 18:08

Yes, those dopey kitchen maids who ‘saw something’ but ‘don’t want to get mixed up with the police!’ - and end up strangled in the cupboard under the stairs.

Is Lucy Angatell the highly competent cook/house keeper person who makes good pastry. Smug?

Isn’t that Lucy Aylesbarrow ?

I don’t mind Lucy Angkatell, I find Henrietta a bit more annoying! I like Ariadne Oliver (in her earlier iterations). I think my worst is Theresa Arundell - so rude! All the protagonists are unsympathetic in Dumb Witness.

nowindofblame · 09/05/2025 18:49

Hastings, thinks he's the white knight to any beautiful woman even to the point of betraying his friend over a stranger who's a possible murderer.

mynameiscalypso · 09/05/2025 18:51

I was going to say Captain Hastings too.

It is, I liked her!

Hillsaremyhappyplace · 09/05/2025 20:13

I might have to dust off some of my Agatha Christies!

Miss Lemon. She just seems a tad like a bitter spinster behind her niceness.

Karma masquerading as murder?!

Arlanymor · 09/05/2025 20:53

Mrs Boynton tortures her entire family and everyone wants to kill her!

But I also nominate Hastings for being a wet lettuce and the original himbo.

outofofficeagain · 09/05/2025 20:55

Louise is Murder In Mesopotamia.

HOW DID YOU NOT REMEMBER MARRYING HIM.

See also Marina Gregg and Arthur Badcock. Christie had a low opinion of women’s recall.
