How do I find out why I went to SEN school.

When i was a child 8 or maybe nine. I'm quite sure it was year 3? I jointed a school for children with moderate learning difficulties. I was not told why and I never questioned it. I feel like there's a big chunk that i don't know about myself. I'm not sure if things were done differently on the mid 80s like what would have been done to decide i needed to ho to a special needs school. I guess there were not ehcps back then ? I have read GP would have had records. Why would a GP have records about my schooling ? I read that i can ask for a SARS? But it said something about knowing the dates and what it is im looking for . I'm not even 100% on the dates. And I'm not sure how to word what I'm looking for.

Were you registered with a different doctor before 1996? The records may have been on paper and not forwarded when you moved.

Perhaps you could try to contact the old surgery to see if they still have old records?

Have you tried the council lie the school suggested?

Good luck x

From 1990/91 till I think till 95 I was living in Norwich . So my gp was there . The odd thing is though my recoded show a note from the late 70s. So something must have been past. Surely not one not odd paper.

I haven't been to the council yet. I was just really hoping there may have been somthing on gp records council feels like a whole new confusing battle

When I worked in the old MLD schools in the early 1980s there wasnt really much GP type info. It was not treated as a medical matter [other than sight and hearing]
There has been a slow but constant medicalisation [hence using words like diagnosis] of the normal range of us humans.

saraclara · 02/07/2025 16:00

I also taught in MLD schools in the '80s, and don't recall ever coming across GP involvement. The only source of information you're likely to find helpful would be from the Local Education Authority of the time.

As the previous poster said, learning difficulties weren't medicalised back then. The referrals came from the mainstream school that the child had been attending, and an educational psychologist that the LEA supplied to see the child and write a report.

I have just done a sars request for my old school information. Really hoping it can be found looking on a deeper level now so really want it found . Fingers crossed.

Very roundabout statement 🤦‍♀️.
The data rules specify what information can be released and what cannot by each organisation. They can usually only give information where that body created the records involved.
The council are not the ones with permission to release data from the school because the school is data controller for pupil information.
This seems especially annoying when the school may have been part of the council at the time you attended.
At least they have told you to contact the school rather than just giving you incomplete information.
I so hope that you manage to get some answers soon.

The school said they only have me registered as going there . And they suggested I contact the council. But im wondering if other people have stuff and I don't know who they are. If anyone and if I don't know who or if. How do I know to even ask

No , I do t see how they would have anything from all then years ago.
They would though, they might have paper records archived somewhere and a teacher might remember you. I met my first class teacher recently!!

stayathomer · 10/07/2025 14:35

Op look up old local Facebook groups- as in groups remembering your locality and put up a post saying you want to connect with students and teachers from back then. Best of luck x

I heard back from Norfolk today they said its complex so needs to be extended and they have upto 3 months 😭.

Its not so bad if they come back with something. But I could wait all that time for nothing to come back.

Hopefully it means they have at least traced your name, but may have several archives and formats to check.
