How do I find out why I went to SEN school.

When i was a child 8 or maybe nine. I'm quite sure it was year 3? I jointed a school for children with moderate learning difficulties. I was not told why and I never questioned it. I feel like there's a big chunk that i don't know about myself. I'm not sure if things were done differently on the mid 80s like what would have been done to decide i needed to ho to a special needs school. I guess there were not ehcps back then ? I have read GP would have had records. Why would a GP have records about my schooling ? I read that i can ask for a SARS? But it said something about knowing the dates and what it is im looking for . I'm not even 100% on the dates. And I'm not sure how to word what I'm looking for.

Yeah I have no idea what the long posts are about. They just go over my head 🤷‍♀️

I'm autistic, and reading it all is fuzzing my head up.

Hoping the posters making the long (now irrelevant to the op) comments can have some respect and take it to a new thread. Please 🙏

I was told I had moderate learning difficulties. But I don't even know what that actually means. I have dyslexia. I thought that was just to do with writing and spelling. But apprently it's more than that. I did like my 1st SEN school but not the 2nd.

I didn't think it effected me in life. But I think that's because I didn't know any different. On MN I feel like it sticks out a mile. The long posts on this thread i litterly have no idea what they are really. How educated and clever everyone seems to be on here . And the confidence everyone seems to have with what they post. There are lots of words that I don't even know the meaning of cant even read the word. It just has to be one word I don't know and that throws the whole post of for me. I know I have just mentioned MN but its kind of the same for real life to.

I also find I can't stand up for myself very well I often can't find the words I need. Whilst trying to be careful not to hurt people's feeling or make them feel bad.

Sorry i went on a bit there.

That's why I'm sticking up for you. I understand, these long comments are overwhelming and unhelpful to your journey.

A journey which you have every right to be on 💕

Moderate learning difficulties is a wide term for all sorts of issues. Dyslexia may be part of that but the specifics may well not have been formally recognised in the same way at the time as now. So you may have short term memory problems, coordination difficulties, processing written or verbal instructions, issues with reading, writing and/or numeracy, been easily distracted for example, but no diagnosis. You may have had attention or behavioural problems in the classroom and got behind in your learning because of your difficulties and that in itself may have meant you were given a place at a special school.

I think that's the issue. I feel like I want to know what lt meant personally for me. I feel like I want to label it so that I understand it. Instead of it being under a massive umbrella that could mean anything. I may never fi d that out though. Still have to wait and see

Make fun of you but in a juvenile joking way. It's a shame they watched you grow up.

How are you getting on OP? Have you found anymore info about why you were sent to the SEN schools?

I hope you get some answers OP. When I was growing up, in primary school, some struggling students would often be "kept back" meaning they wouldn't move on to the next class with their peers. They would have to repeat the same class again. Interesting to see that it's not really done anymore (where I live at least)

Oh was that in England? I have never heard of that. I would have probably been in year 4 at 16 if that, was the case 😅.

GP reception said my records will be ready in a few days to collect i have a feeling i won't find what I'm looking for . But may be an interesting read.

These people brought you and you can't ask them a simple question. Are you scared of your family?
You're not going to find what you are looking for you would have found it by now. I would muster up the courage and ask your mum she would know.

I have no contact with my mother. My family are not that approachable in that way . It likely they would say they don't know. Or you were just a bit slow. And that's it. They may not know or remember.

We don't know if i will find what im looking for lots of posters said to contact the school i did no joy. People told me to find out via gp records I don't know if that will tell me anything or not. Then after that i have achieves to look at . Again it may come back with nothing. But I have nothing to loose by trying.

my primary school did similar. No one was kept back but those who were the quicker learners did two years in class 1 (final class before secondary) and those who needed additional support went into class 2 for a year then moved to class one. The class titles aren't judgemental, you went to a school ate age 5 and went into class 7, followed by class six and so on

UpsideDownChairs · 19/06/2025 19:35

I know that when my mum tried to get my brother's GP records from when he was a child (also the 80s, also statemented and went to a special school - my mum wanted proof of some of her suspicions) it turns out they were all destroyed - I forget how long they kept them, but anything older than a certain age was destroyed..

I hope your GP surgery was better, and digitised/kept them rather than destroying them.

MsDDxx · 19/06/2025 19:56

Youagain2025 · 08/05/2025 10:56

Can't ask parents. How would a GP have something noted from the 80s ?

Why wouldn’t they? I can see my records from the 80s. They keep everything about you.

MsDDxx · 19/06/2025 19:58

SheridansPortSalut · 08/05/2025 11:41

You can ask all of the people and places that have been suggested without needing to know why they would keep records. Just start emailing and see what, if anything, they come back with. You're over thinking it.

This - just ask!!!
