I'm so fucking sick to death of war mongering men.

This. There are literally 12 year-olds who could run the world better than this.

ChessorBuckaroo · 07/05/2025 00:46

Always some idiot fighting over a bit of land. Lived through it in NI.

No different to pissing dogs marking their territory.

We have not advanced as a species.

Reminded of the pale blue dot image everytime some pointless war kicks off, an image that captures "humanity's minuscule and ephemeral place amidst the cosmos". A tiny ball of rock suspended in space, and none of us own any of it as we are merely using it until our brief time on it is over. Sagan left us with the most profound message known to us if only we'd take it on board.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pale_Blue_Dot

"From this distant vantage point, the Earth might not seem of any particular interest. But for us, it's different. Consider again that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar", every "supreme leader", every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds.

Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.

The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand.

It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known."

— Carl Sagan

This is incredibly sad. Wars are hideous things, and I feel for the vast majority of ordinary people of both nationalities and origins in their communities here and abroad. Humans never learn. Imagine what we could achieve as a species if we worked together.

On the day the uk signed a trade deal with India….wonder what stance we will be taking?

Weirdly using a year old photo to show the jet on fire

To be fair journalists will not have access to or photos of the recent jets yet, assuming it is true. If it’s true I expect pics to circulate soon.

The stance that will allow us to sell the most goods?

Sroia · 07/05/2025 03:08

It’s very well to say “more war 😢” but India has very much pursued a policy of restraint, choosing to prioritise economic development, regional stability, and global partnerships over getting caught up in hostile rhetoric or prolonged confrontation with Pakistan.

PM Modi actually avoided making Pakistan a central talking point in recent times.

But there comes a point where restraint must meet responsibility. When your country is repeatedly targeted by terrorist attacks (and there is credible evidence to suggest the Pakistani government is supporting said attacks) then something has to be done.

Or should India just accept its citizens being routinely rounded up, having their genitals checked to see that they are uncircumcised/Hindu and executed?

India has tried peace. It has tried dialogue. Yet Pakistan keeps backing terrorists to attack India.

PluckyCheeks · 07/05/2025 03:12

Yay. Another reason for millions to “flee” to the UK. Budge up!

And which country divided up India and Pakistan in such a fucked up manner?

Heard of Partition? Millions died.

Partition was supposed to be a gradual process over years but it ended up being rushed and executed in just a few weeks, leading to catastrophic consequences. The current escalation over Kashmir is a arguably a direct consequence

One country is attempting to lift it’s citizens out of poverty via economic development and the other country’s entire foreign policy centres on destabilising its neighbour.

caringcarer · 07/05/2025 03:49

What is wrong with the world? So fed up of these countries choosing war. I feel sorry for those in Pakistan.

I think the ‘budge up’ is wrong and insulting.

But blaming the UK for India and Pakistan’s 80 year feud is pathetic.

Totally agree with this. The BJP has absolutely built up to this point with encouraging attacks on Muslims and stoking conflict against Pakistan. They are supported by fanatics with quite extreme nationalist views.

I hope other countries can use diplomacy to end this but I can't imagine Pakistan not responding. They seem to have been aware of what was to happen by showing foreign journalists the targeted sites in advance of the attack as evidence they were not terrorist bases, which is apparently the reason India is giving for the attacks🙁

The UK isn’t entirely responsible, sure, but some of the tension that exists arguably is a direct consequence of British colonialism

British rule used divide and rule tactics whcih undoubtedly deepened religious divisions that fueled communal tensions. Prior to Britain rocking up and ransacking India, Muslims and Hindus were often able to live side by side in peace as neighbours and friends.

Partition (hastily drawn up by the British) displaced 15 million people and caused massive violence. Borders were arbitrarily created leading to long term disputes like Kashmir.

While there were occasional conflicts between Hindus and Muslims prior to British rule in India, large scale communal violence was definitely not the norm. Hindus and Muslims often interacted socially, economically and culturally quite happily.

It was Britain that institutionalised religious identity - eg via separate electorates and censuses. Britain promoted divisions as a tactic to weaken unified resistance to colonial rule.

Britain butchered India and Pakistan during partition leaving behind a territorial dispute which has endured to this day. Kashmir being the prime example.

such a worry

EleanorReally · 07/05/2025 05:35

it was pakistan that attacked india recently, t his is retaliation

What on earth are you on about.
This is false news , the vast majority of Kashmiris are Muslims - they rely on tourism why would they do this? Upcoming elections in India have so much to do with this- and their far right government. Pakistan couldn’t even organise a piss up in a brewery.
indian govt needs to get their own house in order - their default is to alway point the finger at Pakistan.
they need to ask how on earth this happened in one of the most militarised areas of the world.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/KargilWar

Pakistan has form for this, they use state sponsored terrorism frequently. I am no fan of Modi but Pakistan should consider focusing on Pakistan instead of pissing off their neighbours. Despite having more resources I don’t believe that India has financed terror attacks with Pakistan.

I do feel for both the Indian tourists who were murdered and the Pakistani civilians who have been killed and injured. I absolutely blame the Pakistani military for this.

Sroia · 07/05/2025 05:56

It’s pretty widely accepted (even by international bodies and intelligence reports) that elements within the Pakistani state ie its military and intelligence service have supported militant groups that carry out attacks in India, especially in Kashmir.

What is India supposed to do?

India has tried ignoring Pakistan’s provocations. Should India just accept the fact that Pakistani terrorists targeted and killed 28 of its citizens? Who by the way were specifically targeted for being Hindu.

I’m sick of the narrative “oh backwards brown people starting silly wars because they can’t get on due to silly, minor differences”

User37482 · 07/05/2025 06:08

@Sroia

Sad to say but I agree, theres only so much most countries can tolerate. Theres a reason Bin Laden was happily hiding in Pakistan and theres a reason why America didn’t notify the Pakistani authorities of the operation to get him, he was there for 9 years!

Their military is well known to be knee deep in militants. This is not the fault of Pakistani civilians at all but just like Iran the Pakistani government chooses to engage in state sponsored terrorism and then fall over crying claiming that they are the real victim when someone retaliates.

I really really hope this is the end of it.

Sroia · 07/05/2025 06:27

Yup, Bin Laden was found living ONE kilometre away from a Pakistani military base, yet no one knew of his presence?

How did his unusually large compound with 18 foot high walls and barbed plus no phone or internet wires never garner any suspicion?

I guess the Pakistani intelligence agencies think burning all household rubbish is normal too!

I can see civil unrest on the streets in Muslim areas 😮

For years I’d have agreed with you wholeheartedly. People wouldn’t be that stupid.

But then, many years ago I thought Israel and Gaza were close to peace and it was clear a working two state solution was the answer.

I thought Brexit would never happen, growing up I thought closer ties were inevitable, when that became obvious it wasn’t happening, at least that we would never be so daft as to leave.

I thought Trump would never get elected (the first time, called it the second)

I didn’t think Russia would full-on invade Ukraine.

The worlds a very different place to the one I thought it would be growing up in the nineties.

I wouldn't say I’ve lost my faith in humanity, I don’t think I ever will - but I’m seeing it much more as a spark, as opposed to a burning light.

Edited

I feel the same, the world has changed so much in the last few decades, but I am hoping for a pulling back from the brink before it gets any worse

Oh yes I forgot about this, Pakistani intelligence, definitely our friends 🙄. They aren’t even the friends of the Pakistani people. Those poor children in the Peshawar massacre, fund the Taliban in Afghanistan then have shocked face when they set up shop in your country.

BeethovenNinth · 07/05/2025 06:57

There have always been wars. Nothing new. As I age I seem them more as the norm and due to the hideous greed and corruption by humans. I don’t even particularly blame men any more.and it is always the innocents that suffer.

User37482 · 07/05/2025 06:57

Hopefully the Pakistanis see sense and don’t retaliate and just let it go. It can be done and dusted now, no more civilians on either side of the border need to die.
