Idiotam habemus - Trumpum the Bigly XXX - Trump thread #143

No grey smoke necessary.

First 100 days have come and gone. Vance has killed the Pope, Musk is melting away and Trump's tariffs are on a slow boat to China.

Coming soon... Bigly's Birthday Parade. What could possibly go wrong?

I've shown that article to DH (nuclear chemist) and he's horrified. He said the 'Linear No Threshold standard' is the basis for all nuclear safety. There is no alternative. Get rid of that and you're risking everyone's safety, from the nuclear power plant workers to the person getting a dental xray.

He's also concerned that Trump is chaging the governance framework so that the Whitehouse can implement their own changes to nuclear safety regulations, overriding experts, and in a way that allows them to hide the changes from the public.

Eek.

But also so happy to have a nuclear authority on speed dial on the thread!

Evenstar · 09/05/2025 20:04

My DH is retired but was a nuclear regulator before that, also unimpressed.

Maybe I’m just being daft but the question that springs to mind is why? What on earth does the 🍊 gain from something so obviously stupid?

On the question of whether things can be undone that they’re doing, this was discussed recently in TRIP US and the conclusion was that there are things they’re undoing and breaking that can never be replaced. Even if another administration comes in and wants to, the basic elements just aren’t there anymore.

"Canada is in advanced talks with the European Union to join the bloc’s new project to expand its military industry...

...a move that would allow Canada to be part of building European fighter jets and other military equipment at its own industrial facilities."

Trump expects that any contractor dealing with the US "State" - so in the USA and abroad to not have any DEI policies.

This means that US military bases abroad, when sourcing contractors in the UK who may supply them with goods and services, should not be using companies that have DEI policies.

I can see a lot of issues with that - especially when they want to source things such as water, power and food. And any council services.

The Devil's in the detail when you come up with such policies.

MsJinks · 09/05/2025 22:41

How many WTF just on this thread - just since teatime 🙈
Nuclear - beyond belief - just glad there is that pond between my kids and the US - obviously frightening for those nearby and I'm sorry for that.
And not accepting other countries have their own sovereign ways, rights or not etc - who does he think he is?! Needs to probably just have embassies and military in Iran and Afghanistan then ...

I think it basically comes down to project 2025 and its proponents and acolytes wanting no regulatory authority or checks and balances to impede whatever it is they want to do, from building to asset stripping to rockets to AI and on and on. Nothing that gives government authority to impede speed or profits. A lot of them, including Gorsuch, are essentially in influential places due to their sympathy for that position.

It's the weekend, so to like minded others who need a pause to reflect and digest the sunami of Trumpisms, here's a measured Guardian article. A strategy for dealing with tariffs, like the proposed Canada/UK/EU defence alliance.

I wish all Gov'ts would stop using the word 'deal'. It plays into Trump's narrative of being the best dealmaker, so withhold the word from him. #mindgames

The art of dealing with Donald Trump? Don’t fight him alone | Jonathan Freedland

This week’s trade deal is a boost for Keir Starmer. But a lasting win will only come by joining forces with other nations to resist the US president’s entire destructive agenda, says Guardian columnist Jonathan Freedland

Angry Looney Tunes GIF by Looney Tunes World of Mayhem

So much has happened since I’ve been out and about with guests this week, I haven’t really been keeping up. At least the new Pope is a Good Thing (I hope).

@Igotjelly - I saw your despair yesterday or the day before, and am completely with you about the state of the world, particularly about women’s equality which was also mentioned (not sure by who). That “country of Mattel” business is particularly striking - why doesn’t someone tell him he’s wrong, though? Also, that DEI business in Stockholm - WTAF? Who does he think he is to dictate to other sovereign nations? He must have dementia, surely? That his courtiers don’t seem to challenge him on this or anything else is truly disturbing, though.
(I can’t even think about the nuclear proposals. Ludicrous and frightening.)

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 10/05/2025 08:11

@MigsandTiggs - thank you for that link. I particularly liked the concluding paragraph (my bold):
"Now, clearly, Starmer’s duty is to protect Britain from a US currently wrecking the global trading system. He took a step in that direction this week. But the greater, more lasting protection will surely come only when the free nations of the world don’t merely try to save their own skins, but instead come together to resist an American president bent on destroying so much that we all value – and not only on trade. Who knows, there may even be another American leader anointed this very week who would give such an effort his blessing."

DH reckons It's to do with all the current excitement about SMRs (small modular reactors). The tories were touting them as the miracle cure for all our energy woes, while failing to recognise that they only exist theorically. The only country to have one is Russia, because they don't worry so much about nuclear safety.

America had a program to develop them but abandoned it decades ago because of safety concerns. DH reckons there's a Tesla SMR in the pipeline and the only way to adress the safety concerns is to do away with the safety regulations.

That's probably right. I'm sure nothing could possibly go wrong. Elon is a safe pair of hands.

I remember reading about this last year and having a WTF moment about it! And that was before the 🍊💩 was elected and before people knew for sure what a complete tool Leon is.

Trump has announced that India and Pakistan have agreed an immediate ceasefire and the start of talks. I’m no fan of 🍊 as we all know but if true it’s a pretty major win for him.

DuncinToffee · 10/05/2025 15:57

India is saying it was worked out directly between them and Pakistan. Pakistan is saying other countries were involved, notably the UK

Ironically. the threat of Trump sorting out other countries problems could be the incentive they needed to do it themselves.

I hear he's got a plan to bring peace to Devon and Cornwall over jam, scones and cream. He knows about clotted cream ... He knows so much about clotted cream ... He knows the most about clotted cream. That's what they call me the clot, you know. These people. They know I know about things ...

RafaistheKingofClay · 10/05/2025 16:21

He can fuck off if he thinks the jam goes first.

BustingBaoBun · 10/05/2025 16:39

All that I have read indicates to me that the peace agreement between the two countries happened in spite of Trump, not because of him.
But of course he will tell his moronic MAGAts, he is bringing peace to the world.

If his administration managed to get a ceasefire between 2 nuclear powers on the brink of all out war (and I say a big if as it’s seeming increasingly likely other mediators had a pretty big role including the UK and Turkey) then how would it not be a win?

Igotjelly · 10/05/2025 16:58

That couldn't be anymore bland and generic if it was being served as British food.

"Facilitating" ? Much like men in maternity wards facilitating their partners labour.
