What’s happened lately to make you think ‘the world has gone mad’?

So after seeing some threads on here today about men being allowed to a breastfeeding group, someone getting in trouble at work because they were a woman wanting to be addressed as a woman, and who knows what else… I’m curious what has happened lately that makes people think ‘WTF! The world has gone totally mad!’

Every day I wonder if I am in a simulation. I think it has been that way since about 2016 - the whole Brexit debacle.

This is something from this week that possibly irrationally scared me. I don't really understand the need, when so many other things really need attention, to make a robotic horse that looks like a wasp hybrid from a dystopian sci-fi film - just missing lasers IMO https://theconversation.com/a-robot-that-you-ride-like-a-horse-is-being-developed-it-will-stretch-current-limits-of-engineering-254483

A robot that you ride like a horse is being developed. It will stretch current limits of engineering

Kawasaki has unveiled a concept robotic horse, but can it actually be achieved?

It feels like this all day every day. The biggest thing is probably the fact we are heading towards catastrophic irreversible climate disaster and yet govts/media organisations etc are seemingly carrying on as normal.

Yup. News story last week about a small group of scientists filtering carbon out of water to see what impact it has. Meanwhile thread on here asking what you use AI for (huge wastage of water every use) and people reply in multiples "to make cartoons of my pets!"

mjf981 · 01/05/2025 23:56

Trump Trump Trump.

And climate change. We have gone off a cliff and the future is catastrophic...and nothing of any consequence is happening. I think the issue is just too big and complex for humans to grasp, and to make the changes that need to happen. We're stuffed.

And the weather forecast today was all about how glorious it is and that it's been the hottest and driest April since xxxx. Join up the dots!

YourOnMute · 02/05/2025 00:27

Climate change.
Belief in science just disappearing.
Violence against women and the increasing viciousness in discourse about women.
Facism and far-right politics making a reappearance.
Trump.
Palestine. Ukraine.

Toseland · 02/05/2025 00:49

Men attempting to breastfeed and women being kicked out of the same support group for objecting!

A small thing, but indicative of society. I went to the library yesterday with my preschooler. Someone had their very young child, under 2 on a screen with the sound blasting. I despair for the future of humanity. A few months ago someone tried to bring their dog in for children's Storytime 😕

People don't want to do anything about climate change if it means even the slightest inconvenience to them

The balaclava’d young kids committing arson, attacking kids younger than themselves in parks (a 7 year old was recently dragged by the hair off a swing and had her head stamped on with her grandma there) or attacking fully grown adults. Stabbings. Intimidation because they’re carrying knives. The police can’t do anything. These are kids in big groups aged 7-16 or older. Reporting gets you nowhere. They parade about in balaclavas or with their hoods pulled tight around their faces. And I’m only on the edge of this estate that they’re spilling down from. The nearest town centre isn’t worth going to for fear of a huge gang of these kids on bikes ready to assault anyone they feel like. It’s a known issue but nothing being done about it. They’re not scared because they know they’re untouchable. One of their own died via e-scooter recently after a collision, his mates left him dying in the road while they hid the scooter because it was stolen. It became this big thing of a memorial for him with his mates firing firework rockets at police and passing cars. Seems to have died down now but the rest of the balaclava gang are back on form.
A couple of weeks ago I had to call 999 because from my front room I could hear a little boy screaming for help. The balaclavas had him. He couldn’t have been older than 7. The teenage lads picked him up and ran with him with two teenage girls running along behind. They took him onto the roundabout and this poor little boy kept screaming “Stop!” “Help me”. I gave all details and two police cars did actually turn up within 7 minutes. But by that time the kids had taken the little boy into a house (which I gave full details of) and they all ran back and forth away from the police cars. The police didn’t even stop outside the house and knock. Just drove around for a bit and then left.

Someone tried to bring a dog into a funeral service I was at on Tuesday.

And not the deceased's dog, or the dog of a close family member or the likes. Not a service dog either.

A random ex colleague turned up and brought their dog. And complained - and were genuinely surprised - when they weren't allowed to have it in the crem. Moaned that it goes everywhere with them.

Even moaned to family members of the deceased as they arrived.

Sounds horrendous, where is this?

Velmy · 02/05/2025 01:51

Crypto still gets me. Never have so many people who don't understand what they're doing been conned on such a large scale.

For example: While the news stories about folks losing their life savings were mostly exaggerated, people were genuinely putting hundreds, thousands and more into the Hawk-Tua girl's crypto currency.

There are loads of great use cases for NFT and Blockchain technology, but the number of people (from the supposedly tech savvy generation) who saw - and still see - it as their golden goose is incredible.

Woman next to me in a cafe, mindlessly scrolling insta, next to her toddler who was coloring and pulling on her arm

I mean, come on

Blueplu · 02/05/2025 03:19

That defining what a woman is had to be discussed at the High court

Overtheatlantic · 02/05/2025 03:38

The open flattery towards Trump by his cabinet members. My cat has better morals.

Ivyy · 02/05/2025 03:39

Yep another one for biological sex and science having to be clarified to define what a woman is. Why doesn’t this happen with trans men and make the news though, genuinely interested as to why we don’t have trans men protesting about not being welcome in mens toilets, or men complaining about trans men using their male spaces? Why does it only seem to be trans women in female spaces making the news?

And Trump, Ukraine, Gaza, most things have already been mentioned by pp

Ivyy · 02/05/2025 03:52

And social media, me thinking an Instagram account is real then finding it spammed with comments saying it’s another hot girl AI account that’s fake. I feel so naive it just looked like the usual influencer account with filters used to make her look perfect, I can’t even tell who’s a real human in these pics or it’s AI.

Teen girls having their actual home shown and real-time location on Snapmap for all to see, 13-14 year olds posting semi naked photos, all false eyelashes and nails, caked in make up trout pouting and constant flicking and swishing or very bouffey long hair. A very specific pose which I can’t even begin to describe, find it utterly depressing sorry

MsNevermore · 02/05/2025 04:01

I’m stuck living in Trump Land right now so I’m not sure Mumsnet allow posts long enough for me to list all the ways I feel like I’m living in a really low budget disaster movie 🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠
Theres multiple things every single day in the news that have me “what the fuck”-ing out loud. Things that my family and friends in the U.K. tell me the rest of the world’s mainstream media is mostly being kept in the dark about because none of it is being reported on outside of this hellscape

Summerhillsquare · 02/05/2025 04:54

How we're making the same mistakes over and over again, completely contrary to the evolution and development of our species and largely due to extreme inequality and misinformation. See: climate change and 'economic growth'/ austerity/"there's no money".
