What’s happened lately to make you think ‘the world has gone mad’?

So after seeing some threads on here today about men being allowed to a breastfeeding group, someone getting in trouble at work because they were a woman wanting to be addressed as a woman, and who knows what else… I’m curious what has happened lately that makes people think ‘WTF! The world has gone totally mad!’

Genuinely fascinated by people who are still denying climate change at this point.

Me too! This is one reason (of many) I'm concerned that Reform are doing so well.
We need real action around climate change. I'm far from perfect eg. I fly once a year, we have a petrol car but it has a 1litre engine so low emissions, lower than some hybrids. We don't use it lots either. Electric isn't the answer either with all the damage that's doing with mining and the use of fossil fuels for battery production.
Governments around the world need to pull together on this one.

Mischance · 02/05/2025 09:24

Trump, just Trump.

He enca[psulates all that is wrong with the world.

Most feminist convictions, such as it's in women's best interest to get into 50/50 relationships. Until men are the ones to get pregnant, give birth, take care of children, do most or all housework, do most or all family admin - AND work on top of it all...women should not contribute a penny to bills.

Allowing 14 year olds to have "boyfriends", and treating them like they are the husband of their said 14 year old.

Normalising leaving shit stains in the toilet. And normalising poor toilet habits and hygiene in general.

Blended families. Most ridiculous thing that doesn't work. And it's unfair to the children that their space, parent's time and money get wasted on other people's children.

Letting children rule the household, being scared of your own children, being scared of "pushing children away" so you accept nonsense, age-inappropriate behaviour from them and generally taking on a super 'lax and undisciplined approach to child rearing. Parents aren't supposed to be their children's best friend, they're supposed to be their PARENTS.

Excusing bad behaviour, lack of social awareness, lack of manners and selfish, grabby behaviour with "autism".

Tolerating horrible men that are alcoholics, gamblers, porn-addicted, cheaters, liars, drug users, have no job, expect women to spend their money on them...the list goes on.

Moving men into your home after a few months of dating. Plus points if you have children and doing this shit. Shame on you.

Denying that biology dictates how men and women behave, and what things they gravitate towards.

Veganism.

Getting pets when you are already overwhelmed emotionally and financially.

Tolerating being taken advantage of, and allowing people to use you and take, take, take from you without ever getting anything back.

Sounds like you’re a rage baiting troll

rainbowstardrops · 02/05/2025 09:28

The first thing that came to mind was Trump and his arse licking hanger ons.
The amount of young people carrying (and often using) knives against others.
Babies and young children sat in pushchairs/trolleys/cafes with a screen shoved in front of them.
People who consistently throw their toddlers pants away if the child has had a poo accident in them instead of just rinsing and washing them. Crazy.
I could probably go on and on because I think this country/world is fucked.

I feel as though I'm in a permanent state of dissociation now. It's causing a lot of anxiety and I struggle to process current events and constantly feel on alert for the next weird or worrying thing that's happening in the world. I grew up under the Cold War and threat of nuclear weapons, but that was normal compared to this. I feel as though I'm in another world. It's like a simulation and feels unreal. I guess that's the dissociation. My brain is constantly searching for a return to normality, but it never quite manages it. The current insanity that is trump is the latest thing I'm struggling with. I can't comprehend how it's even happened. He has the cognition of an eight year old, how the hell is he leading the USA?

DrCoconut · 02/05/2025 09:32

It looks like reform has won the mayor election locally. Depressing. I can only hope that a couple of years of them on a small scale is enough for people to see who they truly are before the next general election but to be honest I’m not holding out much hope. People will not see the alarming parallels with history, they won’t actually read the policies or voting records of these individuals and just witter on about foreigners and boats.

frozendaisy · 02/05/2025 09:51

The desirability of fake bits in your body to create a body shape that you would naturally have.

Looking good, being fit, enjoying your body and what it can do, all good.

Butt inserts, injecting fillers into your face, fake tans, fake nails, fake eyelashes, fake tits, feels like it is done so you can attract a high earning male and potter about taking photographs of yourself. It's fucking weird.

And this fear of wrinkles, grey hair, just basic aging.

Injecting poison into your face to not get wrinkles. Fucking insanity!

Totally this, though I've now come to see the period of stability I grew up in, namely the 90s, as the anomaly. I don't know why I thought things were basically going to get better in a steady line of progress - that seems a total fantasy now.

Somethingthecatdraggedin7 · 02/05/2025 09:56

Trump, trans ideology and reform.

WisePearlPoet · 02/05/2025 10:02

Lack of resilience, we need it to function so people no longer function. How is that good for society.
Endless labels for personality. I completely understand that there are people, many people who do have a diagnosis that is valid but I've heard some corkers recently that surely just describe a personality type.
Woke: essentially a generation saying what they like but being offended if someone says something back
Obsession with self: when did people start taking photographs of themselves constantly, often heavily filtered so it's no longer them anyway and then there's the inevitable raft of comments along the lines of 'beautiful' and 'lush'.
Children not being parented effectively leading to a lifetime of issues (my opinion)
Brexit: which fool (Cameron) entrusted a vote of such complexity and magnitude to the public.
Trump: say no more
Social media: it has some good points but in general it has a created a culture of self obsession and attention seeking. Plus it's not real life. It's damaging our kids.
The new trend of "wholesome" on social media. Fgs it's just a normal way of living and spending time with family, it hasn't just been invented, equally slow living isn't new, when you live in the North of England in the countryside it's always slow. I've appreciated the small stuff and "glimmers" for decades.

EasternEcho · 02/05/2025 10:14

Chiseltip · 02/05/2025 07:02

No, we are not.

The hysteria is just a control measure used by governments to generate revenue through environmental taxes.

Don't believe me?

Ever wondered why the solution to all serious "environmental issues" is a tax?

Petrol cars are bad! Unless you pay a tax.

Flying is bad! Unless you pay a tax.

Pollution is bad! Unless you pay a tax.

They don't ban anything they say is "bad for the environment" they just tax it.

It's called a deterrent. Surely you understand that? Or do you think the high taxes on tobacco products is to just earn money, and not to discourage smoking, and that there's really nothing wrong with tobacco products? There's been a significant drop in smokers in the past decades, so it can't be only for the revenue can it? It is to discourage people from doing the activities you have mentioned.

Climate change.
Belief in science just disappearing.
Violence against women and the increasing viciousness in discourse about women.
Facism and far-right politics making a reappearance.
Trump.
Palestine. Ukraine.

Yup all of this.

I just automatically assumed that as long as there were no major wars or natural disasters affecting us that we'd just potter along with things gradually being improved and adjusted and things would remain on a somewhat even keel. Things you'd taken for granted your entire life would always be there - then you find yourself living in some weird, dystopia. I keep wondering if the people who were born in the 1920s felt the same about the modern world.

The balaclava’d young kids committing arson, attacking kids younger than themselves in parks (a 7 year old was recently dragged by the hair off a swing and had her head stamped on with her grandma there) or attacking fully grown adults. Stabbings. Intimidation because they’re carrying knives. The police can’t do anything. These are kids in big groups aged 7-16 or older. Reporting gets you nowhere. They parade about in balaclavas or with their hoods pulled tight around their faces. And I’m only on the edge of this estate that they’re spilling down from. The nearest town centre isn’t worth going to for fear of a huge gang of these kids on bikes ready to assault anyone they feel like. It’s a known issue but nothing being done about it. They’re not scared because they know they’re untouchable. One of their own died via e-scooter recently after a collision, his mates left him dying in the road while they hid the scooter because it was stolen. It became this big thing of a memorial for him with his mates firing firework rockets at police and passing cars. Seems to have died down now but the rest of the balaclava gang are back on form.
A couple of weeks ago I had to call 999 because from my front room I could hear a little boy screaming for help. The balaclavas had him. He couldn’t have been older than 7. The teenage lads picked him up and ran with him with two teenage girls running along behind. They took him onto the roundabout and this poor little boy kept screaming “Stop!” “Help me”. I gave all details and two police cars did actually turn up within 7 minutes. But by that time the kids had taken the little boy into a house (which I gave full details of) and they all ran back and forth away from the police cars. The police didn’t even stop outside the house and knock. Just drove around for a bit and then left.

That sounds awful. Can I ask where it is so I can avoid it?

I studied mostly broad brush long view history at university, people in many times have felt like this. Periods of unsettling change after stretches of stability always seems to many like a catastrophe because it's the end of everything that they know and change is frightening. Look at the Reformation, or the French Revolution. It's just unlucky for us that we seem to be hitting one if those times.
Climate change is obviously a bigger issue, but even then life will go on, just differently.

When things are easy people don’t put the effort in to fix what is wrong

those who have easy lives forget about the others until they really make themselves a nuscinace

Gaza. A genocide playing out on our screens and social media, and yet the world looks away.

A man drowned in a river in Cork and, instead of trying to help, people watched and filmed. I heard about it this morning, and it's been on my mind since.

Edit to add text:
"Some footage was live-streamed but Mr Shine spoke out on Thursday after it emerged that the actual drowning and the recovery of the man’s remains had also been recorded by some onlookers.
Mr Shine, who has been a firefighter for 44 years, said: “People today tend to video rather than render aid. But this was another level.
“I would have expected to see lifebuoys in the water and there are some in the area, but I didn’t see any in the water and I’m not sure if anyone attempted to throw a lifebuoy.
“I would appeal to people not to share these clips and to consider the impact it might have on the man’s family or friends if they saw it.” from Irish Examiner

Bluevelvetsofa · 02/05/2025 12:06

Trump front and centre.

The notion that shops and supermarkets, particularly small local ones, are fair game for anyone who can’t be bothered to pay for goods.

The notion that it’s fair game to break into houses and cars and take their belongings and those of their children. Unfortunately it seems to be open season on thieving and anti social behaviour and they simply aren’t held to account.

EleanorReally · 02/05/2025 12:20

a man wheeling down fast the high street on an electric scooter, nearly knocking so many people over, went into the shop, came up with milk and wheeled fast up the hill

a kid with some form of electric bicycle, zooming through the playing field, too fast, could have hurt people, their dogs, let alone himself

EleanorReally · 02/05/2025 12:22

sick leave in the nhs,
come back, work a bit, go off again for a further 6 months.
i get you may have your reasons of course, but are you just working the system and ruining it for the rest of us?

adults and their adhd diagnoses.
everywhere!

I learned yesterday that male pattern baldness has 6x more money for research than my severely life-limiting disability does. It's absolutely despicable. I have no cure, no approved treatments at all, and no medical support, yet I only have about 4 good hours in a day. So depressing.
