One word in English you don't like

Mine is "appropriately". It's commonly used by people explaining their thinking or belief, without giving consideration that the word has different meaning to millions of people with different cultures around the world.

Cumulative. I can’t bloody pronounce it. Ever.

PoodlesRUs · 28/04/2025 12:53

Concubine. Ugly sounds.

rookiemere · 28/04/2025 12:54

Moist - gives me the ick if anyone uses it.

OoooopsUpsideYourHead · 28/04/2025 12:55

'Moist'.

Particularly when used in a conversation about sex.

X post! 🤣

I’m using the frequent contender for Most Hated Word as the start of my username, so I’m clearly unreliable on this.

Would a slang word count? I absolutely hate Maccies for McDonalds. It sounds awful.

Although I do like one nickname for that place. My childhood best friend had quite snooty grandparents on one side who were convinced their son had “married down”. He was a good laugh about it, and used to tell his parents he took the children to dine at The Golden Arches. It went on for a good few years before my pal’s little brother let slip “Daddy means McDonald’s”

Comedycook · 28/04/2025 12:56

Obviously when something is not at all obvious.

Dearg · 28/04/2025 12:56

Lush, unless applied to verdant pastures. I know it’s regional but when Tom Kerridge describes his cooking as lush, I want to vomit.

ruethewhirl · 28/04/2025 12:57

Tasty. I don’t know why but I just HATE it. Good job I’m not a food critic though, as I also detest ‘flavoursome’. 😄

BeeCucumber · 28/04/2025 12:59

I was going to say “moist” but I have been beaten to it. My second choice will be “literally” because it very rarely is.

Prang. I just don't like the way it sounds 🤷🏼‍♀️

LuckyCharmz · 28/04/2025 13:00

I can hardly stand to type the word I hate as I hate it that much.
pamphlet 🤮

rookiemere · 28/04/2025 13:04

Oh I have thought of more. People on here using “Sainsbos” instead of Sainsburys, gives me the absolute rage for some odd reason, ph and “packup” rather than packed lunch. I am not overly fond of the use of “snacky bits” or “nibbly bits” either - just say what you mean.

SwimBikeRunBake · 28/04/2025 13:07

Slag

Horrible misogynistic word used to demean women and yet seems to be totally acceptable word (I think it was used on the latest episode of HIGNFY).

And I hate it even more when spoken by a women.

youcannaecallherfanny · 28/04/2025 13:13

Specifically. Mainly because there’s a few people I know who pronounce it pacifically and it gives me the absolute RAGE (I’m looking at you mother in law)

I also really really hate the word period.

Lacoutine · 28/04/2025 13:15

Gusset

AquaTofana · 28/04/2025 13:16

How has nobody yet said panties?! 🤢

AquaTofana · 28/04/2025 13:17

Panties with gussets! 🤣

Thank goodness you can nolonger buy Hackle Moists in the UK 😆

IdaGlossop · 28/04/2025 13:18

Holibobs.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 28/04/2025 13:19

Portion. Really hate it, can't really explain why.

Butthechildrentheylovethebooks · 28/04/2025 13:19

Utterly.
It's used way more on here than I ever hear it in real life. Always sounds so pompous imo.

Ashesof2046 · 28/04/2025 13:19

I could give you a long list, but one I hate that no one else seems to have a problem with is "whilst." I don't even know why, I've just always used "while" where other people use "whilst" and I much prefer it. I write in American English a lot for work, and they do not do "whilst," so maybe that has something to do with it, too.
