Watching it now. I'm not religious - but it is a fascinating watch and a beautiful setting.

I watched the second half and the drive through the streets. Tuned in at a seemingly endless 2-line chant/song that just went on and on and on...

I agree about the pallbearers. I get it's REALLY heavy, but it just looked really messy and teetering on the edge of disaster the whole time. It reminded me of the Queen's funeral, and what a vastly superior job her pallbearers did.

It was the invocation of the saints. I found it pretty hypnotic.
The pall bearers didn’t do that last transfer well and always looked under pressure, but they weren’t military men or people trained to it, just men the late Pope had asked for. It’s not a big deal if they aren’t polished.

Mimn · 26/04/2025 13:08

It’s too bright blue. Needs to be a black/blue

Anyway Rome is central Italy. I know Puglia (Italy’s ‘heel’) has the dark colours that @PumpkinsAndCoconuts mentioned.

Oh now we get to the mass where it becomes painfully obvious how many present never go to mass ;)

I don’t know, it’s all in there somewhere from attending as a child.

I am watching - only just tuned in to see a little. The man in the front of the coffin bearers looked like he was having a hard time and I was getting anxious that he was going to fall over!

Another one looked as if he was going to have a heart attack.Third from the front, balding and wearing glasses. I.hope he's OK.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 26/04/2025 12:19

It's a zinc-lined wooden coffin. Other popes of recent times have had three coffins - wood (cedar?), lead and oak.

Thank you - that was it.

QuiteUnbelievable · 26/04/2025 13:18

So trump and zelensky were front row along with other head's but starmer was 3 rows back??

Yes, I noticed him. He seemed to be in pain with every step and I wondered if he was suffering knee pain.
White they were standing outside Santa Maria Maggiore they seemed to have to wait for ever with the coffin tipped up which would have been even more of a strain. It seemed to go on forever just watching them struggling while they waited and waited for the signal to process into the church.

Who cares, he did what he needed to do, the Vatican are probably glad to get rid of those folk ASAP, think of the security issues with all those heads of states in the one place.

Let the people who actually knew the Pope have time to themselves.

Do you think all the international folks who were at the Queens funeral hung around for sandwiches and sausage rolls?

Yeah. I really thought that’s what happened 🙄😂 fuck me

So why the comment in the first place?

So why the comment in the first place?

It was someone else’s comment.

The Novemdiales or 9 day’s mourning are for RCs.
As a PP said, the Pope loved football so no reason why the PoW shouldn’t attend whatever event it is.

Eh? No it wasn’t. The poster said he could at least say for the sandwiches. Another poster said did she really think that’s what happened. The same poster replied no with emojis suggesting that she thought it was ridiculous. Screenshot of the exchange below. Is this a name change fail?

The line up of red cardinals? inside was very raggedy. You wouldn't get that in the UK 😂

Taytocrisps · 26/04/2025 13:45

Seems a bit rude not to offer them a bowl of soup and a bread roll, at the very least Wink. I mean, some of them have travelled a long way to Rome for the funeral in their private jets.

TheAutumnCrow · 26/04/2025 13:48

Sir Keir Starmer is also there to represent the UK as Head of Government and eat sausage rolls and cheese & crisp sandwiches.

My mistake - apologies!

The power the Catholic church still has is clear with all the world leaders attending.

"It was the invocation of the saints. I found it pretty hypnotic."

I did too. I wonder if the saints were all ones that Francis had chosen to invoke to pray for him?

I'm grateful for the contributions to his thread from people far more knowledgeable than myself. Very interesting reading. 🙂

Absolutely, why show respect for a religion with a mere 1.4 million members - it's only about 1 in 7 of the human race, not worth bothering with.

Don’t forget the cheese and pineapple skewers for which the Vatican catering nuns are justly famous.

(Totally envisaging an alternative version of Conclave in which Isabella Rossellini’s stone-eyed nun was a fifth columnist who’d spent decades getting into exactly the right Vatican position to poison a world leader’s sausage rolls at a papal funeral…)

Taytocrisps · 26/04/2025 14:11

I'm loving the image of the world leaders munching on sausage rolls and trying not to spill crumbs down their expensive suits. Obviously they'd need a vegetarian alternative for the Muslim and Jewish leaders.

You might want to change that "m" to a "b". 😉

Hey, some of us Christians are veggies as well, probably more than you think !
🙂

Trump’s blue suit looks very out of place.

Doesn't it just! Navy blue, grey or black would have been more appropriate.

Having said that, I was pleased to see him engaged in conversation with Zelensky.

Isn't Starmer a veggie? He may eat fish.

It's complicated. It depends on the occasion. The saints are grouped into categories and recited in those categories.
There's an explanation here:
https://adoremus.org/2008/11/the-litany-of-saints-in-the-liturgy/

We usually have it at the Easter Vigil and All Saints Day. It won't be as long as the one at the pope's funeral.
There's room for local variations so if you have a local Saint or a Martyr they are likely to be included in your parish church's version. The saint your church is dedicated to will always be included.
There are some saints who are always included and others can be added. There are strict rules about the order and groupings of the saints. I think the oldest saints in the group come first.
If someone has died, like the Pope, their saint's name will be added in, if the name hasn't already been included.

When a pope dies all the deceased popes who have been beatified or canonized will be included.

The pope won't have chosen those saints as such because rules have to be followed but he might have asked for particular saints to be included.
