Botox - would you?

I really want to go for it but I'm worried I'll end up looking cross eyed or I'll have an allergic reaction or something awful. I'd only go to a registered nurse and I only want something subtle due to the lines under my eyes. No lines on forehead. Would probably top up once or twice per year.

Has anyone reading this had botox and do you regret it? I'm 40.

What can they do for under eye lines if not botox?

Not a lot. Definitely not botox. Laser, tear trough filler and lower bleph are about it really but none of them are without more serious risk.

I'm 40 (almost) and i'm considering it. What i've heard is that when it wears off, you just look how you did before, so it doens't really "de-age" unless you actively have it. Also you can't get it when pregnant. I've tried the frownies patches and they work temporarily. Honestly, staying hydrated and healthy is probably the safest fix, but i'll likely give botox a go as i'm ageing and would like it to be less noticeable. Feel like grey hairs and wrinkles are suddenly a thing.

Yes that does happen. The muscles cause the wrinkles. When they can't move, you no longer see them. Once the muscle can move again, the lines come back.

It's better to let it wear off completely though than to keep topping it up trying to avoid the re-aging stage. If it's always frozen the muscle can atrophy. As your forehead is part of the structure holding up your face, it can cause lower face aging/sagging faster. If that makes sense?

I'd rather look like crap for a couple of weeks before getting botox again. Lower face aging is no joke. It's a different beast to fix than upper face.

Youbutterbelieve · 25/04/2025 21:15

Yes, do it. It doesn't reverse things but does prevent.

For under eyes it'd be filler (or surgery). Which I won't do and is what messes your face up. Botox doesn't mess your face up. People who are anti cosmetic procedures often mix up Botox and filler, but they're very very different.

I’ve had it twice a year since I was 30 and would highly recommend it but given you don’t seem to have a real understanding of it (thinking it can make you cross eyed) then I’d suggest you have a proper consultation to understand the risks and whether it will actually help your areas of concern

It absolutely can cause a lazy eye or worsen an existing strabismus. In my experience of these sometimes they correct once the Botox wears off and sometimes not as the eye muscles are weakened by a prolonged period of not being used and struggle to regain functions. Botox can also leak into the tissue surrounding the eyes and cause vision changes which may or may not correct itself.

I’m on my tenth day and still have wrinkles when I move my eyebrows. This is only the third time of having it. Last time she said I must be resistant so I’ve gone somewhere else and it looks like I am. Now I’ll have to pay for dysport. So I’ve just spend £600 on two ineffective Botox trips

limebasilandmentalhealth · 25/04/2025 21:39

@SansaStark90do you not have a top up at 2 weeks? I always do and this sorts out any bits that haven’t taken at the first appointment?

I’ve gone to a doctor instead of the nurse I was seeing. She says that’s not how she works. I’m really disappointed tbh so I’d suggest op. Don’t start with all this crap

UdoUboo · 25/04/2025 21:58

OP, polynucleotide injections under/around your eyes might be a better idea than Botox! It’s smoothed out a lot of lines for me. It’s not a filler or Botox, more of a ‘skin regenerator’.
it didn’t get rid of my eye bags, like tear trough might, but my under eye area looks so much better than before.
from memory you have your initial injections, then another lot after 2 weeks, then a top up around every 9 months. But it may vary depending on your practitioner.

Stringervest · 25/04/2025 22:20

I am 40 and have been having it for a couple of years. I love it. I stopped for a bit in favour of a Skin + Me subscription (didn’t have money for both) and quickly realised nothing makes me feel or look as fresh as Botox does. I have forehead lines and 11s done and I don’t think it’s obvious unless you’re looking for it. I find it’s a little more noticeable when someone has had the sides of their eyes done as the smile looks different so personally that wouldn’t be for me. I would not be interested in fillers.

As pp have said, I’m unsure whether Botox will fix the area you are concerned about.

confusedaboutetiquette · 26/04/2025 08:21

As a direct reply to your question OP: no. I like what I see in the mirror at the grand old age of 59. I’ve been diligent with sunscreen (any dermatologist will tell you this is the God tier of skincare).

my daughter had to have a dose of Botox not long ago in advance of a surgical procedure on her face (it was scar removal). She’s in her twenties and questioned the surgeon about it, telling him that some of her friends were having it. He told her he never advised it uunder the age of 35 because it actually contributed to worsening muscle tone.

Yeah it’s a weird thing, it makes younger people look older

I've been having it since my early 50s - I'm 60 now and still look pretty fresh - I get it done by an excellent medical practice twice a year - they do it so well - no element of the frozen dome head

Could you say where please.

Botox for crows feet can affect the extraocular muscles , as you are quite near the lateral rectus so potentially you could go cross-eyed (develop a squint). The incidence of this happening is around 1-5%

I was the 1% and it ruined years of my life. Even once the Botox wore off the eye didn’t recover. Nobody ever believes me that it happened but it did.

TheOliveFinch · 26/04/2025 11:44

@Fourpawsblacksorry this happened to you , I’m an orthoptist so have seen a lot of patients who have had Botox to actually treat squints and often blepharospasm so over the years have seen a number of people where Botox has spread to other muscles from those intended. I haven’t personally seen someone affected like you but am very aware it can happen

BobbyBiscuits · 26/04/2025 11:47

My mum told me I need it. Lol. I said ok then get your wallet out.

I guess I would have it on my 'number 11' and the wrinkles horizontally above that.

I've got massive eye bags that look like bruises. I've heard Botox is shit for under eyes as the area is too sensitive?

So yeah, I guess I would but only if someone else was paying.

I need a rhinoplasty as my nose was broken a couple times during DV attacks. So I'd rather spend my money on that. Not that I'd ever have enough money spare to do it.

namechangeGOT · 26/04/2025 12:03

Im 40! I love botox. I love the appearance of my face, I also love the effect it has on my extreme bruxism! Without it I’d have no bottom teeth at all!

I get my face done with a nurse and in my jaw and temples at the Maxilofacial department at the hospital. So, botox to me is a face-fresher and I painkiller at the same time!

yes, getting older (or not dying young) is a privilege, but I’ll continue doing it while looking fresher than I would without it!

Fraaances · 26/04/2025 12:07

I just chickened out because a Korean influencer lost her sight in one eye recently. I had been so excited too.

MrsCravensworth · 26/04/2025 12:12

Nah. I don’t want to inject a toxin in to myself - I don’t give two shits what anyone else does by the way, I go with my friend to get hers done as a hand holder as she’s scared of needles. Inject what you want into yourself, it’s none of my business.

Also, the joy of being partially sighted is that I can’t see myself clearly anyway, unless I really try, which I can’t be arsed to. So, I can’t see me, and I don’t care what other people can see.

Calmdownpeople · 26/04/2025 12:13

Runlikesomeoneleftgateopen · 25/04/2025 16:35

I wouldn't because I''m 56 and happy with way l look. It's about how you feel inwardly rather than how you look. Botox wouldn't make me any happier, l give myself permission to grow older, it's a blessing, not a curse.

Totally agree. Optionally putting poison into my body when let’s be honest we don’t really know the consequences yet isn’t for me.

Im over the worst now thankyou I just hope it makes someone else think as I never once thought it would happen to me. I had to have 2 surgeries to correct it (apologies NHS for my stupidity costing money) and am now more wrinkly than ever from constantly squinting as it caused horrendous double vision and migranes.

Even once the Botox wore off the squint remained as my muscles were so weak they couldn’t correct themselves. My surgeon has seen a few cases so I think it’s more common than you think.

TheOliveFinch · 26/04/2025 12:48

@Fourpawsblack when I’ve seen Botox go wrong it has been injected by an ophthalmologist so even done by an expert things can happen , I would never let anyone other than an ophthalmologist inject anywhere near my eyes

I thought that was an injectable “skin booster” juvelook volume. Touted as not a filler. But not botox.
