Dh’s friend was 49 when she had her child.

Just wondered what age you know of for people to have their first, conceived without help.

My friend at 49. First and only baby, completely unexpected. Gave birth at 50.
She was incredibly fit and about 10 days before the birth I saw her swimming lengths down at the local pool.
My boss never wanted children and had an oops baby at about 44. Her DH was early 50s

52, my mum’s neighbour who thought she had an ovarian cyst and was too scared to go to the doctor. When she finally went she was told she was 7 months pregnant!

49 is way too old to be having a baby, it's both irresponsible and cruel

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 22/04/2025 07:21

My great aunt who recently died in her 90s conceived her only pregnancy in her mid 40s. She had a termination as her husband had a hereditary heart condition that they didn’t want to pass on.

Several people haven't understood the question. FIRST baby.

Thank you, I was about to say the same! Not baby no5 or whatever.

It's tricky because you don't know how "natural" it was. Some people have assisted conception of one type or another, without sharing that information.

Her first baby at 52! That really is remarkable.

Congratulations!

  1. Had planned for a life with no children, but was lapse on contraception at 47. Her child is now grown up, and very loved.

Old friend had one last year at 48. Big surprise. Has another one though who is in her teens.

Energe · 22/04/2025 08:03

These threads frighten me. I stopped using contraception when I hit 47. No more babies yet at 49

I know a lovely couple who unexpectedly had a child when she was 50 and he was 60. They absolutely never planned to have children, but took it in their stride and now have a 15yo son. It helps i guess that they were (still are incredibly) both fit and active.

needmorecoffee7 · 22/04/2025 09:07

At least some of these grandmothers who allegedly gave birth later in life would have been covering up for a teenage daughter who got pregnant out of wedlock

DidYouEverGoBack · 22/04/2025 09:16

I know a few women who conceived naturally at 41-44, but sadly all resulted in miscarriage.

40 is the oldest I’ve known a woman conceive naturally and it result in a healthy baby being born.

MIL was 42 when she had DH. He's the youngest of 6 and 20 yrs between the oldest and youngest siblings.

I don’t think you have understood the initial question.

Cookiebix · 22/04/2025 09:23

I think a lot of the 45+ ones, especially from a generation or more ago, are far more likely to be an older daughter/neice's baby that's been brought up as the mother/aunt's own child.

More recently, how would anyone know if they were conceived naturally?

NHS advice is it's not safe until a year after your last period or after 55yo

jodolun · 22/04/2025 09:31

A friend of mind who is "childfree" got pregnant at 49 and had a termination. My SIL only met her husband at 45 and got pregnant unexpectedly at 47 and gave birth at 48 everything was fine no issues.

I guess its not over till its over, if you still menstruate then it remains a possibility that you could get pregnant.
