Food you don’t often see anymore

BigJanette · 21/04/2025 11:48

What dishes did you used to eat, but don’t really see around anymore?

I’ve just remembered a M&S ready meal I ate quite regularly in my student days (this would’ve been in the mid 90s) but haven’t seen since.
Smoked haddock kedgeree.
Anyone else remember it?
I used to make it every so often, but haven’t done in years.
I think it’s time to remedy that and get it back on the menu.

Any easy recipes welcome!

That’s true @MissMarplesNiece . The card wrapped ice cream was perfect to slice and put on wafers to make sliders.

AnneKipankitoo · 02/05/2025 08:31

I liked Neapolitan.

I liked Neapolitan.

We sometimes had Neapolitan - that was for special occasions. I remember my dad came across a shop that sold Tutti Fruitti ice-cream and we went out on a special car trip to get some. This was back in the 1960s, things were a lot simpler then.

@AnneKipankitoo Whisky icecream sounds like a nice treat 😋

Ice cream used to be sold in blocks wrapped in card, rather than the tubs we get now. I haven't had raspberry ripple ice cream for a long time. Not the modern version from the supermarket, or the lovely one my sister makes, I'm thinking of the old fashioned block that the ice cream man sold. We used to have a some nearly every week in the summer, after Sunday tea at my grandma's house, when the ice cream van came round.

That reminds me, I haven't had a 99 from an ice cream van for a long time. There's a van that parks by a local school in the afternoon. If this hot weather holds I think I'll walk up there today and buy one. I bet they're not 99p any more.

And you could get square cones for ice cream sold in blocks.

We still buy the blocks in card

MissMarplesNiece · 03/05/2025 03:13

@MargaretThursday Oh yes, I'd forgotten about those.

@NotSafeInTaxis Where do you buy them from?

I remember those! Also Oyster or clam shell shaped wafer filled with ice cream.

Auburngal · 03/05/2025 15:34

Starburst Joosters. Very juicy jellybeans. Mid 00s

BigJanette · 06/05/2025 20:12

Thanks for all the recipe recommendations - I finally made it on Sunday , it was lovely! Will definitely be a regular around here now.
Still wish M&S would bring it back though 😅

That was a pay day treat when I was little. We didn't have a fridge and he would bring home the small block (1 pint?) and slice it so we all got the three flavours.

Id forgotten about those, would be lovely to be able to still buy them

The lady who helped my Mum look after me when I was small went to work in a bakery when I started school. She used to bring me Hovis rolls home! 💕

My grandma used to butter digestives…I don’t see that any more but it’s probably a good thing 🥴

Oh my God! I still butter digestives and sometimes have cheddar on them to.
Bloody yummy.

God, I loved cheesey moments! Can’t believe they still do bacon fries and not cheesey moments!!

My husband recently stayed in a hotel and they had complimentary bags of scampi fries and the bacon ones.
He brought them home and honestly they tasted foul..chemically and stale (checked and they were in date)
I used to always get a few packs with my pint of cider back in the day!(cheesy moments where my fave)
Also the beef and mustard and ham and ?branningans crisps

chaosmaker · 07/05/2025 13:21

Ham and mustard I think. Yes, yes yes again to cheesy moments. I could eat a few packs of them now.

ThePineappleSeahorse · 07/05/2025 13:27

Brannigan’s were beef and mustard and ham and pickle.

Gooseberries, where are all the gooseberries?

Ooh yes, gooseberry pie!!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 07/05/2025 14:05

Whoever mentioned jam tarts, I made some the other day to use up some leftover pastry that wasn’t enough for anything else. It’s literally decades since I had one, but with blackcurrant jam in (rather than over sweet e.g. strawberry) they were v nice.
Dh very nobly helped me scoff 9 of them. 😋

I'm inspired! Haven't made any for years. My preference is raspberry jam. Agree strawberry is too sweet.

Five boys chocolate! No-one else remembers it ....

I do!

Prawn cocktails have made a comeback in recent years and I'm pleased to add that they are on the menus at two very nice local restaurants. Haven't had a vol-au-vent for years but would love to see them making a comeback. They were delicious 😋

Not long ago I saw ‘giant’ prawn cocktail as a main. The chef had often made it for a regular, but then decided to put it on the menu. It proved very popular!

I would hazard a guess that the potted head was either sheep’s or pig’s head, boiled, stripped down and potted with the resulting jelly ?

Pig’s head done like that is called brawn - used to be widely available. You can get the same thing in France, either fresh or in a jar from the supermarket - they call it Fromage de tete.

I know this isn’t really the question but still to this day I daydream about these items which have been discontinued

secret chocolate bar
golden cup chocolate bar
drifter
potato puffs
ready salted chipsticks

I’ve started many petitions and written various sternly worded emails to these companies but never had a reply.

Ready salted chipsticks-gone!?!
They will explain why I've only ever found salt and vingear ones when raiding the kids crisps selections.
The plain ones where the best!
I remember puffs now you have said it. Liked those too

My mum if making a pie and had any pastry left would always make some jam tarts.
Always say I will do..but never do
Usually because I use ready roll stuff and there isn't always enough left 🙃

Boiling fowls were very cheap, & good if cooked correctly.
Rabbit off the bone, think it might have come from China.
