A) You are Hungry.

B) You know if you don’t eat first thing, you will be hungry later in the Morning?

Have to eat something due to plethora of medication taken in the morning.

TwinklyNight · 17/04/2025 05:54

B...I have to eat to take my meds.

I don't eat breakfast and I don't get hungry until about 1pm.

I do love cereal though - so if we've had dinner at 5.30pm, 8pm will often find me eating weetabix or porridge (or coco pops). Or sometimes I just end up skipping lunch if I'm busy and then about 3pm I realise I'm starving so I have 'breakfast' then.

UseOfWeapons · 17/04/2025 06:02

B. I’m not a natural breakfast eater, had to train myself to eat it within an hour of getting up, as I changed my job, and could no longer have a break mid morning, which was more to my pattern.

VashtaNerada · 17/04/2025 06:22

A - I wake up starving and light-headed. This thread is interesting to me as I am overweight. I’ve never been able to relate to people who can skip a meal, I am always aware of when it’s time to eat as my stomach is rumbling and I feel slightly faint. I was slim when I was younger but was bloody miserable and hungry much of the time! And I never skipped a meal when I was slim, just ate much less than I do now.

Comedycook · 17/04/2025 06:25

I don't really eat breakfast unless on holiday....I find when I eat breakfast I end up eating more all day than if I didn't. It kind of starts me off and I end up more hungry... doesn't matter what it is, porridge, eggs, carbs, no carbs...once I start, I struggle to stop.

Neemie · 17/04/2025 06:38

I have always eaten breakfast and felt hungry for it. The only time I don’t is when I have eaten a huge dinner.

SingingSonnets · 17/04/2025 06:38

I eat breakfast because I exercise in the morning and eating beforehand seems to make me be able to do more. I also eat it because it’s easier for me to get the right nutrition in 3 meals rather than skipping meals.

Annoyingsquirrels · 17/04/2025 06:56

A - but I think your body gets used to regular eating times. If you are not hungry in the morning but start eating at a set time then within a few days/weeks you will get hungry at that time.

I think the evidence is that eating earlier in the day to match your circadian rhythm is better for you so I prefer to fast in the evenings.

Mel Robbins podcast was talking recently about the importance of women eating as soon as we wake up.

cortisol levels in women peak first thing apparently, and eating something can lower them. We’re not hungry because stress levels are high.

no idea whether it’s actually true but it makes sense, so I’ve been trying to make myself have breakfast

BitOutOfPractice · 17/04/2025 07:12

Im awake a couple of hours and have done a workout by the time I have breakfast at 9:30ish. So im ready for it by then. Im never hungry first thing in the morning.

Missey85 · 17/04/2025 07:19

I don't eat breakfast I just have a coffee ☕ I'll eat at lunch

Both. I don’t tend to eat after about 6 most evenings so I’m genuinely hungry most mornings and if I skip or go light on breakfast I end up eating more during the day.

I think trying some sort of intermittent fasting can be interesting to see how your body responds. One of the things I learned when I did 5:2 for a while was that, to my surprise, I was less hungry the morning after a ‘fast’ day - I could exercise and go for a walk fasted. I also learned not to fear being hungry. We talk about being ‘starving’ but of course (unless you’ve got anorexia or a medical problem), we aren’t. I’m carrying plenty of energy with me!

This is interesting, I used to be anorexic (to the point I was given 2 weeks to live) but I never completely starved myself. I had 3 (very low calorie) meals a day.
I've been recovered for about 20 years but I always feel outrageously greedy when I read about what most MN eat because I'm nearly always hungry! I have breakfast lunch dinner and snacks just about every day. (I'm not overweight, my bmi is 21)

GivingUpFinally · 17/04/2025 07:47

C) I don't like breakfast, but have recently changed jobs and I can often worl through lunch without any breaks. I eat breakfast now because I know will be hungry a some point and need the energy/calories to get me through

AlteredStater · 17/04/2025 07:47

A. I've always been hungry for breakfast within half an hour from waking up. I'm hungriest in the morning, my appetite drops off markedly in the afternoon then I'm reasonably hungry for dinner, but no snacking later. DP on the other hand will go all the way through to lunch time before eating most days.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 17/04/2025 07:48

On work days I'm not hungry before I leave the house at 7:30, so I usually take a banana with me and eat that at about 8:30.

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 17/04/2025 07:50

I don’t eat breakfast, just have coffee/water, i eat at around 12:15

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 17/04/2025 07:50

I tried intermittent fasting and it messed with my digestion and didn't really make much difference to my weight!

StupidBoy · 17/04/2025 07:50

I eat when my body tells me I am ready to eat. This is on average around 11 am, but it can be much later. I absolutely do not want to be faced with food within an hour of waking up, so if I have to get up and go straight out I'd rather not eat breakfast at all, even if it means I won't get the chance to eat until after midday.

A good few years ago I remember telling some diet and nutrition 'expert' that I didn't usually eat until mid morning or sometimes not until lunchtime. She told me it was really important to eat a good breakfast as soon as you are up and about, so you don't end up grabbing junk/snack foods mid morning. She also told me I should listen to my body and learn to eat 'mindfully' and recognise when I am genuinely hungry and not just eating out of habit or routine. This pretty much typifies some of the nonsense that is peddled to people struggling with their weight as those two statements completely contradict one another.

My breakfast is still my breakfast whether it involves porridge and toast, or a mumsnet massive salad or a Mars Bar or spaghetti carbonara and a glass of wine. It's still my breakfast whether it's at 7am or 1pm. I break my fast when my body tells me I need to.

If you eat three meals a day and several snacks what are you eating that is so low in calories to support that amount of regular food? Perhaps your meals are tiny and so low in calories that you need to keep going back, grazing because you are never properly satiated. Whereas if your meals were bigger and more substantial you would need fewer of them?
