On the flip side, what frozen food (food hacks) do you not like?

Taken from thread that talks about good frozen food, what ones don’t you like?

it’s not frozen but I cannot stand pre-grated cheese. I always find it too powdery

Frozen prawns. They're just mush. And frozen spinach always ends up too watery.

Melbourne55 · 12/04/2025 18:39

Frozen veg! Always watery and the texture is just wrong.

I’ll happily buy frozen peas + spinach but apart from that it’s a no from me. Not worth the convenience or savings

Knittedfairies2 · 12/04/2025 18:42

And strawberries...

Frozen spinach

Seems like a great idea, but the ones from Asda just disintegrates and looks like spinach flakes

bge · 12/04/2025 18:50

I like the spinach, but only for things like cannelloni or saag paneer. I really do not like frozen onions, just mush. And I tried sweet potato cubes recently and was disappointed

Squirrelblanket · 12/04/2025 19:08

Frozen roast potatoes. Always a weird texture inside.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 12/04/2025 19:11

Frozen avocado! No idea why it’s a thing.

Hard agree, the texture is just wrong 🤢

For smoothies

Depends how you want to use it I think - I mainly just add it into scrambled eggs and risottos etc where the integrity of the leaves doesn’t really matter

DuchessOfNarcissex · 12/04/2025 19:39

Frozen spinach is just slime.

And strawberries...

Agree, they are not as nice as fresh strawberries but they are perfect for overnight oats as they are mushier and you get the juice.

Bluethrowredcandle · 12/04/2025 19:47

Frozen veg. Soggy, nasty crap. My mother insists “it’s the same as M&S”. It absolutely isn’t.
Agree re: pre-grated cheese. I am as lazy as they come but that shit tastes like cardboard.
Disagree about frozen prawns though. The ones from the supermarket are indeed shit and rubbery but if you buy them from a decent fishmonger? Delicious!

HowardTJMoon · 12/04/2025 19:54

Sadly decent fishmongers are hard to find these days.

user1471538275 · 12/04/2025 19:58

I think it's all about how you use it.

The texture of anything frozen changes so it works best in things that are going to have their texture altered through blending/sieving etc. - so soups/curries/sauces/smoothies/compote etc.

fruitpastille · 12/04/2025 20:36

Frozen peas, sweetcorn and spinach are OK but most veg is nicer fresh. Onion is really annoying from frozen - it seems extra oniony - and frozen roast potatoes and jacket potatoes are horrible.

kitchenplans · 12/04/2025 20:44

I find frozen whole leaf spinach fabulous, but I squeeze out the excess water. I wouldn't give frozen chopped spinach the time of day.

I hate frozen roast potatoes, grainy and minging. My roasts deserve proper roast potatoes. Maris Piper or King Edwards.

Can't stand frozen carrots (weird taste) or frozen broccoli or cauliflower (weird mushy texture). Also think frozen peppers are mushy and tasteless.

I've never tried frozen mash/jacket pots and font want to tbh.

pizzaHeart · 12/04/2025 20:46

frozen jacket potatoes - tried in lockdown out of necessity and absolutely hated them.
lemon flavoured Ben and Jerry ice cream - it was part of the deal in Coop, never again
Im also not big fan of sliced peppers anymore, I feel that their texture not right.

TheDandyLion · 12/04/2025 21:07

Frozen mash pellets give me nightmares from my catering days and it tastes like glue. Ditto Yorkshire puddings.
There is no flavour in frozen garlic or ginger.
Onions turn to mush.
Mince turns out gray.

Inspirationfailure · 12/04/2025 21:28

Frozen avocados are unspeakably gross.
mushrooms go slimy so may be ok for blended soup but nothing else
And actually @TheDandyLion may have a point about ginger and garlic. I’ve been buying them and loving the convenience, but was actually thinking that they don’t seem to add nearly as much flavour as fresh or jarred. Annoying as they are super convenient and quite cheap.

BassesAreBest · 12/04/2025 21:30

Any kind of frozen fruit - the texture is just wrong

Inspirationfailure · 12/04/2025 21:32

Also frozen fish, like cod or salmon, are nowhere near as nice as fresh. Oddly, if I buy fresh fish and end up freezing it, it’s much nicer than if I buy frozen fish.

Yes, we u’send to have them all the time but as I’ve got older my tolerance seems to have got less and less. They always taste a little rubbery I find after being defrosted especially the little ones . I just buy fresh ones nowadays.

mindingmyown37 · 12/04/2025 22:43

Frozen broccoli for me is not the one, I always find it goes to mushy…
