Do you believe mainstream media?

I don’t. I used to and I miss being in that safe bubble. I still have a look to see what is being reported, but I’m no longer in that place where I just assume what I’m being fed is correct without doing my own research.

Where you doing your own research?

Cecilly · 10/04/2025 23:43

I trust the BBC for the most part. And the Financial Times gives a fair portrayal of what is happening without too much hysteria.

Ok

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 10/04/2025 23:46

I don't do my own research tbh 😭

But I don't believe the mainstream media, no

The press towards Jeremy corbyn. The lies at the beginning of the pandemic that we didn't need to wear face masks. The near media blackout re the Palestinian genocide

Plus it's all so depressing anyway

I read the guardian or the BBC for important facts re events for example (ie, the tragic passing of a family and pilot today in NY) but that's it

I'm more uninformed and I'm happier for it 🙌

Edit, I used to scour the guardian app daily. Can't believe how much I've changed 😄 - plus, you can't so that anymore, there's only a few free articles iirc

Good grief.... You trust the BBC? Oh dear 😬

Silvertulips · 10/04/2025 23:48

Most news is basic -I’m not sure what research you mean, surely a lot of news will be reported through a central office and sold to the highest bidder?

Or it comes directly from source.

News companies have to prove their source and cross check facts and take a no judgmental view - they can’t report anything .

Wjo says the research sites you visit have the same standards?

Santasjingleballs · 10/04/2025 23:48

Definitely not. They lie and manipulate the truth. You would be dumb to trust/believe it

Where you doing your own research?

I read a lot from lots of different sources: x, Substack, independent podcasts etc.
but it’s a valid question how do we know how valid any source is unless we’ve verified it personally and first hand. It’s about trusting your sources, and I certainly don’t trust the BBC.

Well the press have legal standards and obligations to print articles that are truth or that they have very good reason/evidence to believe are true. If you think k the press have printed lies you must complain to the Press Complaints Commission

Maitri108 · 10/04/2025 23:52

I read various papers to get an idea of what's going on but will fact check if necessary eg go to the source of the data.

I don’t know what sources you read but I feel like o can’t get away from Palestine news.

Jeremy Corbyn is an antisemite. He deserved every bit of bad press he got

notwavingbutsinking · 10/04/2025 23:53

Up to a point. I trust that the BBC, The Times, The Guardian etc are largely accurate in terms of what they actually report. But I am much less confident that they report the whole truth. And as I've grown older I've become more aware that partial truths can be almost as misleading as outright untruths - and even more so in some circumstances.

So I prefer to piece together my own opinion based on a range of sources, my own judgement, and a degree of cynicism.

CeaselesslyIntoThePast · 10/04/2025 23:53

As social media has numbed everyone’s emotions to extreme by 24 hours of shocking content, the news has had to follow suit, making every story sensational to the point that truth takes a backseat. It keeps the money coming in.

Where do you think the media gets its news from? It reports what it’s being told.

Smart thinking. The ramblings of a single unverified person on X are good enough to base a PhD on.

DeltaAlphaDelta79 · 10/04/2025 23:54

X?? For news, and genuine information??

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

i can’t quite believe that anyone would look to X for anything other than to have a good laugh at the hateful pond scum that dominates it

No better or different than trusting organisations such as the bbc who knowingly employ pdfs. A single person on x is not better or worse than a corrupt organisation.

The BBC has reporting standards they have to adhere to. All news outlets do. They’ll land themselves in hot water if they don’t adhere to them. The Levenson Inquiry changed a lot. X is not a news source in any way shape or form.

Have you heard of Jimmy Saville? That’s enough for me. But there are many, many others.
