Booked a tour for next weekend. Has anyone been and can give any tips? I use a walking stick and worried that the tour will move quite quickly. Does it go at a reasonable pace? There's no information on this that I can find. How long does it take to walk both sides? Thanks in advance x

Hi, i did it last year and have walking problems. The tour is not fast and the guides are lovely. However the site is on a hill and is fairly rough ground. There are some videos on youtube where you can get an idea of the terrain. I feel like the first side where i did the tour was maybe an hour. I didnt have the energy to do to other side, but your ticket allows you to access that part on a separate day (i think within a year?). Its absolutely brilliant i hope you enjoy it!

You can go on a tour? 🤔

How much? What do they show you? I would love to do this!

Mercurial123 · 05/04/2025 17:17

I always go by myself to get some peace and quiet. West Cemetry is more interesting as you have the Circle of Lebanon and Egyptian Passage. I could easily spend four hours plus on both sides.

It is uphill and a bit uneven in places.

Yes you can't visit the east side without a tour guide. The west side you can visit with a ticket. It was £17. You can go into the catacombs.

I've given myself 3 hours....maybe I should allow more time 🤔

@JojoM1981 thank you!

Another question - I presume it’s safe? Or a bit secluded?

westcott · 05/04/2025 17:58

I would love to do this. I love a cemetery walk

ThisIsMyYearToFindMyself · 05/04/2025 17:58

I always find them very peaceful places @westcott

JG24 · 05/04/2025 17:58

The ground is very uneven, but it's a wonderful tour, I've done it twice!

ohnowwhatcanitbe · 05/04/2025 17:59

Say hi to my ancestors for me while you're there. Smile

JojoM1981 · 05/04/2025 17:59

Edit it's west side that can only be booked with a guided tour.

I'm not too sure. I'll definitely post back after my visit and let you know if ok? 😊

Oh I’d love a review, yes please.

Are you allowed to take photos?

🙂👍
Yes but no tripods etc so I assume as long as you're discreet it'll be ok. I don't think you can record whilst the tour is happening and no photos or vision the catacombs.

We did a tour and it was really good. There were people of all ages and capabilities on ours. It goes at a slow enough pace so I don’t think you’ll have a problem but do wear suitable shoes for walking as it’s uneven terrain in parts.
You can take photos everywhere, even inside the catacombs.
We did it with our young adult DCs and they loved it. I found it fascinating and a very beautiful cemetery.

Thank you for letting me know about the catacombs re photos. Reading lots of conflicting things online. I'm excited now but going to be so sad when it comes to visiting lovely George 😭

You can’t go into the catacombs unless you are on a tour.

That's right. I've booked the tour 👍

I did it very recently, and our guide was using a walking stick, so we went at his pace. It is a vast place, and the tour only really covers a tiny part of it, but is fascinating. We were able to take photos throughout. I think the only thing you have to be mindful of is if there are funerals taking place to be courteous.

There are toilets at the start, and a small coffee wagon if you get there early.

Iwantacampervan · 05/04/2025 19:26

If you're walking the East Side without a guide then a tip is to read the map carefully and highlight any graves you particularly want to visit. I missed a few and had to back track. It was a very interesting day out - the West Side guide was good and told us lots of information about the site, the architecture and the graves.

Flowersandthorns · 05/04/2025 19:46

I have booked to go after reading this thread - many thanks.

My map reading is terrible 😮As long as I see George and Malcolm McLaren I'll be happy. I guess you can't miss Karl Marx. His headstone is massive 😮
