Booked a tour for next weekend. Has anyone been and can give any tips? I use a walking stick and worried that the tour will move quite quickly. Does it go at a reasonable pace? There's no information on this that I can find. How long does it take to walk both sides? Thanks in advance x

Take a pen for Douglas Adams - there is - or used to be, it's a while since I've been - a pot on his grave where fans leave pens.

Funerals still take place there, so be prepared to move out of the way if a hearse comes along. Behave respectfully - the tourists who come to see Karl Marx don't always. Wear sensible shoes.

If you're walking up or down from Archway Tube, look out for Dick Whittington's cat at the side of the road.

You can see George’s grave but it may not be included in your tour (if you’re doing a tour of that part)- DD went recently and was told they don’t include it in the tour as it’s too recent and therefore not appropriate to treat as a tourist destination. But you can visit it on your own.

Yes!! I've been watching a couple of YouTube videos and saw this 😊

Just wondering when it came to a couple of graves,in particular Roger Lloyd Pack, why was there rows of pebble along the headstone?

Thank you. I'm going mostly to pay respects to George. Is it fairly easy to find?

Unless things have changed you can visit both sides on your own without a tour. I went a couple of years ago.

When I went George didn’t even have a marker but was easily found next to his mum, but I believe there is a headstone in place now. If you google you’ll find directions.

The only time I was in the west side of Highgate on a tour, I saw GM at his mother’s grave. I only really retrospectively registered who it had been. He’s buried beside her. I remember it as being right next to the path, and in an area of much older and more grandiose Victorian graves.

To whoever asked about secludedness — you can only get into the west side on a guided tour, so the only people there will be on a tour, or mourners. The east side used to be open to the public, and I used to walk my newborn there a lot, along with other people taking a stroll, mourners and tourists, but it’s now gone ticket-only as well, which has presumably had an impact on the number of casual strollers.

Say hello as you pass by.

I think putting pebbles on gravestones is a Jewish tradition to show respect or remembrance

Is George, George Michael? If so it's his Greek name. He's buried with his mum and sister. It's a very simple plot. I walked by it and only after watching You Tube realised.

Mercurial123 · 06/04/2025 11:31

You can get into the West side without a guided tour. £10 for East and West.

Hello!! Back from my tour of Highgate. The tour was fabulous and definitely worth doing if only to visit the catacombs. Paid my respects to George and found Malcolm McLaren. Going to go back again in the autumn I think 🙂 Couldn't believe I couldn't find Karl Marx despite having a huge memorial. Ah well, good excuse to go back...

Great you enjoyed it. Karl Marx is in the East side, on one of the main paths.

Karl Marx is in the East Cemetary , which you can enter without a tour, its a small entry fee and they give you a map with notable graves.
