I just peaked at middle class wankerism

At a farm café... naturally. And daughter is on special diet, so she was eating her packed lunch. And she went to eat her apple ...I found my self saying "oh darling, let me wash your apple, it's got brioche crumbs all over it"

What a dick I am 🤣

Is brioche middle-class? They sell it everywhere in the bread/breakfast bit of supermarkets including Lidl and Aldi. I’m definitely not middle-class but my kids love the little brioche roll things from Tesco, especially the ones with chocolate chips.

60% of the UK is considered 'middle class' so surely most things will be eaten by most people in that bracket regardless of where it's sold.

This thread is peak MN, it’s got everything - the outrage, the snark, the triggering, the accusations of hate, the huffing, the humour bypasses - it’s all bloody here! 😂

I’m ignoring the indignation as I think it’s funny if you say something that sounds like ‘middle class wankery’ and you realise it. I’m not even technically middle class but will find myself sometimes saying something ‘posh’ and think ‘hark at you’. 😁

gerispringer · 05/04/2025 13:48

Overheard in Lidl- “oh Gordon they even do Pouilly Fumé!”
Overheard in soft play - small child to other small child: “I only like vegan marshmallows “

What I've learned from this thread is that to be truly middle class, you must sacrifice your sense of humour - if the posters on this thread are anything to go by.

We were on holiday in a very naice middle class place last week (we won a holiday, hence why we were there🤣) and it was a hive of Boden, striped tops/jumpers and "oh Barnaby, do come and eat some lychee, darling!".

When you live surrounded by Primark, tracksuits and "go on, have a dairylea dunker", it very much felt middle class to us 😅

WTF are you on about??

Agree @AquaPeer has some issues.

ruethewhirl · 05/04/2025 13:38

OMG yes! It always sounds like something out of a TV play somehow. Very dated (unless said in a cockney accent e.g. 'Awright, darlin'?' 😄).

When I was in a shared house at uni I remember one of my friends would always be calling 'Darling?' when she didn't know where her bf was. She was all of 20 and it just sounded like she was playing grown-ups. Made me cringe every time.

We need to accept Diversity and embrace linguistic variations. Othering those that aren’t the same as us creates division.

Dp called me middle class for buying a viennetta last week 😂 we really must be bottom of the barrel usually when it comes to class

I won't mention the sparkler...

To attempt to police someone's humor then talk about acceptance is something only a person who both lacks intellectual capability and espouses utterly pointless nice sounding statements to deflect from the share meaness. Get a life. OP is most probably like me working class moved to middle find it awkward so make jokes.

Got Catherine Tate’s posh mum vibes there 😄

I was thinking the same thing !

I hated myself when I caught myself messaging DH to tell him I'd just ordered 2 le crueset spoon rests.

Your mental health might be under threat from your self hatred. Classism is divisive to the psyche. Learn to breathe slowly and embrace Le Creuset as your version of Nike trainers, or whatever it is the plebs currently covet, it’s just another product, not defining your very soul. Take care. X

BarneyRonson · 05/04/2025 12:42

hate speech at the middle class is still ok?

Yes.

BeCleverViewer · 05/04/2025 13:56

Oh wait are you joking okay if you are its very funny and i bow down if not prior statements stand.

Oi - I resent that! I’m solidly mc, but I’m comfortable in my own skin and can laugh at myself and mc wankery 😂

Frazzled83 · 05/04/2025 13:56

I constantly marvel at how middle class my kids sound and wonder where the bloody hell it’s come from. Then I remember I’m a doctor and live in a leafy neighbourhood (also coincidentally 10 mins from a Waitrose) and go ahhhh, yea, that’s because they are 🙄😂

Why?

Cognacsoft · 05/04/2025 13:59

Fortunately for me any accidental middle class remarks were countered by dd ( who was a petite and angelic looking dc) shouting. ‘Come on you reds,’ as taught to her by dh and ds. I never knew when she would shout it.

MyKingdomForACat · 05/04/2025 13:59

BarneyRonson · 05/04/2025 12:57

I love his articulacy and the whiff of Espionage Wisdom. Wankerism is in the shame. Working class wankerism to feel shame at articulacy.

Ok

LuckyOtters · 05/04/2025 14:00

I realised I had peaked when I found myself in the verge of a tearful meltdown in Aldi because I couldn't find the right kind of hummus.

Yogre · 05/04/2025 14:00

What the fuck have I just read? MN on form today 🤣

Do people genuinely think having an apple in a farm cafe or saying the word 'brioche' is humble brag worthy?

Anyway op I understand, sometimes the things that leave my own mouth make me cringe too (from very poor roots, to affluent to poor again due to disability).

Giulia8 · 05/04/2025 14:03

I recently called myself a knobhead too when I found myself huffing about not being able to find nigella seeds for my borek in Waitrose.

Shopping can be so cruel. Why bring this onto yourself by going to Aldi? I hope you’re ok,now.

TonTonMacoute · 05/04/2025 12:27

The sunshine has brought the vipers out I see! 🙄

I was huffing and sighing because Waitrose hasn't had any reblochon cheese, so I haven't been able to make any tartiflette this winter.

Omg me too, thought I was alone in huffing over the lack of reblochon in Waitrose for tartiflette. Will never be able to admit this irl obviously

Giulia8 · 05/04/2025 14:05

One of my daughter’s first words too was Mami except she meant edamame… She did say Mama before that thankfully.

bostonchamps · 05/04/2025 14:06

I'm actually struggling to work out of 80% of these replies are serious or if people are doing some weird faux-mocking joke thing.

CrownCoats · 05/04/2025 14:07

MythosK · 05/04/2025 13:30

ha yes, even Wetherspoons uses Brioche buns for its burgers. lol

Nothing posh about brioche. It’s UPF and has a shelf life of about 25 years.
