I just peaked at middle class wankerism

At a farm café... naturally. And daughter is on special diet, so she was eating her packed lunch. And she went to eat her apple ...I found my self saying "oh darling, let me wash your apple, it's got brioche crumbs all over it"

What a dick I am 🤣

Bloody hell, is hummus a class marker now as well?
You know Tesco knock it out for around a quid?

It definitely is. It’s not about cost. Some mums on the housing estate where I used to live once complained that the local toddler group was getting ruined by “hummus mummies”.

Like the free coffee at Waitrose

There's free coffee at Waitrose? The secrets of the middle class, eh 😏

In my first week at uni I went to the local Sainsbury's, just to see what it was like. I messaged my mum and asked if there was a dress code 🤣

There was , until people who were poor started going there.

These replies are absolutely batshit!!!

There must be some reason why so many posters now feel the need to snipe and pick apart an OP.
It never used to be like this on here.

I think it’s the economic downturn and private school VAT. The middle classes are more anxious than they used to be so they’re gatekeeping more viciously. Because if you don’t have the big house or the private school education to reassure you of your place in society you have to rely on a smug sense of superiority and carrot batons.

BeCleverViewer · 05/04/2025 18:11

AquaPeer · 05/04/2025 17:22

Because they’re desperate to claw their way into the middle classes and food/ Waitrose/ national trust trips and cheap, accessible and easily obtainable that they can convince themselves mean they’ve achieved it

Why do you think becoming middle class means you made it. Middle class means you went to uni that's it. If you earn 6 figures you are in the top 5% in this country. Middle class people are not living aspirational lives. I think you would have to have been raised in an environment where achieving middles class meant something. And there's the me horribly offended if you call me Middle class, work class hero for life 6 figures horses and all. Honest to God I hope this is a joke.

Ah, except I too happen to be a filthy Northerner, but I also happen to know, socially, the original owners of Toast.

I'm a northerner to people in Devon & Cornwall.
Always amuses me when the motorway signposts say 'The North', 'The South West', it's like they should have 'there be dragons' in brackets afterwards.

The sunshine has brought the vipers out I see! 🙄

I was huffing and sighing because Waitrose hasn't had any reblochon cheese, so I haven't been able to make any tartiflette this winter.

My husband was bemoaning this exact issue last week. I told him to stop being a wanker and buy some cheddar in Aldi!

I'm just not middle class enough for him, I've never even been skiing!

quantumbutterfly · 05/04/2025 18:02

Are you using that word in the 'Daily Mail' sense?

Which word? Thread?? Sorry, I don't read tabloids 🤔😂

Can you ask them where they dreamt up such hideous clothing please 😂

It's certainly a rather unique aesthetic.

Delphiniumandlupins · 05/04/2025 18:17

Don't the cafe mind you bringing your own food? Had you brought (or purchased) a bottle of sparkling water for fruit washing? I love a brioche roll myself.

Your thoughts are bonkers. It was a daft, lighthearted post and suddenly the "REAL middle class" have turned up to gatekeep their club from the wannabes 🤣

And why are they bothering? Because they’re anxious about slipping down the hierarchy. If they weren’t, they wouldn’t bother.

Claire903 · 05/04/2025 18:18

You recognised it OP, that's the main thing! Amusing

catgirl1976 · 05/04/2025 18:19

My best one of these was - there’s a Waitrose near a play barn type place that DGPs used to take DS to. Then they’d take him to Waitrose and buy him lobster tails for his lunch (I know).

I shop in Lidl. Lunch is a cheese sandwich and a yoghurt

anyway one day ended up at this play barn and as a treat decided to get him a lobster tail from Waitrose like gps do. Only they didn’t have any. Asked him if he wanted halibut instead and he threw a tantrum in Waitrose screaming”I Don’t want halibut mummy I want LOBSTEEEER”

Died of embarrassment

You must be joking people to not aspire to pass middle class litmus tests. And ski instructors and horse are decidedly something discussed amongst people who have money for it. TBH I think the thing that's stands out the most is when people like yourself try to police how someone might come across its because of your own insecurity your own knowledge that perhaps your less than. Your posting was pathetic you can't gate keep middle classness. God almighty imagine if some of these posters had children they would be so boring to associate with, no knowledge of Hacking no concept on Austrian slopes.

I see you're addressing me but it's a bit tricky to decipher what your heated and breathless comments are-they mostly seem to be disconnected angry words.

However, I can decipher one-which is, "...are decidedly something discussed amongst people who have money for it."

It seems that you are think if you have money, then middle classness 😂 will descend upon you-many comic characters and situation comedies are based on this premise.

You are perfectly entitled to your view. There is no need to get excited and over heated. This is simply a Board on which lots of posters have different views and all those views are subjective.

So, I am also entitled to my view which is those who say or do something which they think is middle class and then call themselves a wanker or hate themselves for doing so, is not the mark of a middle class person. It is rather the marker of a wanna be.

Heaven knows why they would want to be a wanna be, why they think the middle class is something which they should aspire to -but it seems they do.

I do hope that you don't blow a fuse at this reply and that you have a pleasant evening.

That’s not what middle class means at all. Where did you get the idea everyone who has been to uni is middle class?! 😂 what does university even have to do with it?

BeCleverViewer · 05/04/2025 18:25

Do you really not know what middle class means. It's not about money it's about education and largely the job you do but that is a weaker link. I think i agree about COL hitting people like yourself and making you bitter. Honestly your post read as a socially unconnected person who wants to be part of something they cannot understand so they gate keep. It's all they have.

What's a brioche? Is it like a bap? 🤔

A brioche is a sparkly thing your granny pins to her coat but baps are things you get out for the lads when you're on the cider.

TheCountofMountingCrispBags · 05/04/2025 18:26

You have just denied your child the poshest apple crumble ever.!!
10/10 for top MC wankery, I doff my hat to you

Oh god your one of them. I cannot believe you think middle classness means anything in England. It's pathetic you are pathetic and tbh I doubt you have acess to much of society if this is the way you think. Your unable to understand my post because you lack intellectual capability l.

You know nothing about me or my social class

you also really know zero about social class in the uk. It’s quite an interesting subject, and very nuanced. It’s also about culture, family and background. It has next to nothing to do with going to university or the job you do.
