Are there every day hyperboles people use on here that particularly annoy you?

“He cut his head open” meaning that he had a small cut somewhere on his head. “I pulled my kid out of school” meaning “I decided to move schools” And “I spat my tea on my keyboard” meaning “I found something mildly amusing” Although there aren’t as many of those anymore-maybe life has got more serious…..

I absolutely can't stand 'I was sick in mouth a little bit' (no you weren't) and 'it boils my piss'. Well if you had boiling piss you'd be dead.

Ah yes, I actually picture people boiling their piss in a saucepan.

Influencers being "obsessed" by something they're plugging...

Yes, i rememebr the first time i saw tbis and, understandably, took it at face value.

they had posted a photo of somebody (another minor influencer i think) at their prom back in the 90s (American) and said "obsessed with this prom pic of you".

i remember thinking is there really enough substance in one photo to geberate an obsession? and that its a lot of pressure for the person in thr photo. how long is the other person spending looking at the photo, and is the person comfortable with that? Is it stalking?

I see it so often now that it barely registers, and it’s pretty much meaningless, but it was very jarring the first time I saw it.

I'm not especially avid, nor do I devour, spit out my tea, turn around and scream but I do love a bit of hyperbole.

Oh me too, I also know what literally means and amuse myself by saying 'this is literally the worst thing that has ever happened to anyone ever' when I run out of deodorant.

Everyday hyperboles that annoy me? God, there are millions.

😂Also love: for the millionth time, stop exaggerating!

’in the trenches’. Yes, newborns can be hard work but it’s hardly like being in the trenches!!

breast feeding ‘journey’. Like, what?! Why is everything a ‘journey’. Same goes for ‘trauma’.

’spiralling’. The last thread a read where someone was ‘spiralling’, it was because their boyfriend hadn’t replied to their text within about 10 minutes… or something along those lines

Not hyperbole, but a new trend seems to be using “looks like” instead of “be like”.

For example “what would your ideal retirement look like?” “If you work part time, what does your week look like?” “What would your ideal relationship look like?”

I used to take it quite literally and think they were asking for visuals. But they are not, they just mean “what’s it like?”

Libre2 · 31/08/2025 23:29

The way anyone marginally right of centre politically is now “far right” or “extreme right”.

Bubblebubblepoppop · 01/09/2025 23:09

Probably mentioned already, but I hate how in any 'please give me a quick midweek dinner recipe thread' every description has some version of 'throwing' something into the oven/airfryer/slow cooker etc.

Eg

Bung
Chuck
Throw
Stick
Shove

I'm sure there's more!

'chop up some blah blah blah, chuck a few herbs on, bung in the oven'

People's kitchens must be awfully messy with the amount of chucking and bunging occurring.

HonoriaBulstrode · 02/09/2025 11:28

I think I've missed some of this thread so this might have been mentioned, but children and teenagers being 'locked in their houses' or 'locked in their rooms' for two years during covid.

Also, 'introvert' now seems to mean never wanting to do anything outside one's house.

This can also be seen in money / finance threads.

Chuck it in an ISA
Bung it in your pension
Shove it all in a global tracker fund

The smugness just radiates from those phrases.

Does anyone else have to really think hard when pronouncing ‘hyperbole’, even in your own head?

its such a hard word 🙈🙈🤣

Anything with

Fuming

Raging

Furious

In the title, you just know it's going to be exaggerated made up bollocks.

@KnewYearKnewMe in my head it's always " hyper-bowl " 😂

Pomer0l · 07/09/2025 08:07

“Pumped full of antibiotics/painkillers/medication” - imagine someone attached to a bicycle pump getting bigger and bigger until they look like Violet Beauregard.

MsFelicityLemon · 07/09/2025 08:32

Several that describe other people's reaction (such as "screaming") mentioned on this thread already but also one that often features the OP describing how they "very politely" or some such phrase to emphasise how perfect and reasonable they were on whatever situation they are describing.

Just makes me think they were in fact far from polite.

HonoriaBulstrode · 07/09/2025 11:05

Oh yes, the ones that say a teacher was 'screaming' at a child. Teacher probably gave a telling off in a slightly raised voice, and child probably deserved it.

Conversely, when children really are screaming in the garden or playground, it's 'oh they're only playing'.

HonoriaBulstrode · 22/09/2025 15:38

Reviving this thread to say that no-one is ever a bit embarrassed any more. They are always humiliated or shamed.

herbaceous · 22/09/2025 15:49

'I was in literal shock' (which is an actual potentially serious medical condition) rather than 'mildly startled'.

Bjorkdidit · 22/09/2025 16:07

Reviving this thread to say that no-one is ever a bit embarrassed any more. They are always humiliated or shamed.

Or mortified.

Not hyperlobe but I've noticed that loads of people are now telling each other to 'take care'. I first noticed it when a new member of staff had it as her email sign off and I dismissed it as a bit of an affectation but now it seems that everyone is doing it, either to sign off emails, close Teams calls or when saying 'thank you and good bye' in person. So I don't know where that has come from.

Edited

I took thought it was "hyper - bowl". But I've never really heard anyone say it in real life

DH sometimes tells me he is going to “hop in the shower” sounds awfully dangerous!
