Are there every day hyperboles people use on here that particularly annoy you?

“He cut his head open” meaning that he had a small cut somewhere on his head. “I pulled my kid out of school” meaning “I decided to move schools” And “I spat my tea on my keyboard” meaning “I found something mildly amusing” Although there aren’t as many of those anymore-maybe life has got more serious…..

OP posts:

‘Screams’.
Overuse if ‘devastated’ and ‘heartbroken’.

ExquisiteSocialSkills · 24/08/2025 14:10

Sorry, overuse of.

Gowlett · 24/08/2025 14:16

Wow, just wow.

daisychain01 · 24/08/2025 14:19

Massively struggling .... on £150K

unbelievably crass and tone-deaf. On that money get yourself a financial adviser and stop posting goady threads on MN when the country is full of people getting by on MW

"Vile" - just because you don't like something, doesn't make it vile. Very few things in everyday life are actually vile. Save it for them.

People who say things like "please ignore the other posters". It's the "please" that gets to me. It is just so pompous. How full of yourself do you have to be to dismiss everyone else's opinions like that...

EffortlesslyDecluttering · 24/08/2025 14:22

It broke me. Usually with reference to something sad on the telly.

nomas · 24/08/2025 14:24
  • he is an ‘absolutely amazing father’ (usually used to describe an abusive man who does no housework or childcare but who OP won’t leave because he spends a few minutes with the child each day)
  • I’m not a racist in ‘any way, shape or form’. Usually said by racists.
  • I am the kindest person ‘you could ever hope to meet’. Usually said by posters telling women to ignore their boundaries and their own needs and ‘just be kind’
daisychain01 · 24/08/2025 14:25

Threads that start off describing their DP as clever, funny, the world's best dad,. .....

and then goes on to say how they're out on the lash most weekends, don't get their sorry arse back home until 5am on the day of a family outing or event. Mobile battery was flat, no ability to keep in touch every lame excuse under the sun, the OP ringing round all the local A&Es,

join the bloody dots. He is not that Prince Amongst Men you believe he is,

Plinketyplonks · 24/08/2025 14:37

‘On its knees’ - usually used with the NHS or the state of the country. I’ve never heard anyone use it in real life/

In a similar vein, I hate the posters who reply to posts framing their suggestions as questions.

Instead of saying “you could try this” or “this worked for me”, they ask a stream of questions.

“could you ask the hospital this, OP? Could you ask them to do this? Could you ask roundabout to see if anybody else would be willing to do it for you?”

They tend to be really off the wall, stupid suggestions anyway, but the framing it as questions really annoys me for some reason. It’s like they’re personally invested and are instructing the OP to do it.

Everyday hyperboles that annoy me? God, there are millions.

😏

Onleemoi · 24/08/2025 14:59

Dogs (“fur babies”) are never just walking, they’re charging. They’re also constantly snarling or barking and jumping up at people.

IglesiasPiggl · 24/08/2025 15:47

Not so much on here, but in the media - describing all people at parties as "revellers" and anyone on the beach as "sun worshippers". Oh, and anyone going on holiday as a "globe trotter".

ohnowwhatcanitbe · 24/08/2025 15:51

skippy67 · 04/04/2025 13:10

Yep. See also "shaming"

I got accused of 'shaming' someone the other day when I pointed out that it happened to be a zombie thread they'd resurrected.

hangerup · 24/08/2025 15:54

@tuvamoodyson 🤣🤣🤣

hangerup · 24/08/2025 15:55

This confused me for years, I knew so many people who had cut their heads open but have never seen some with a cut open head 😆😆

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 24/08/2025 16:12

Projectile vomiting. Everybody projectile vomits. Nobody just vomits normally. Projectile vomiting is actually quite unusual but I guess it adds to the drama.

hangerup · 24/08/2025 16:14

And everybody has emetophobia!

menopausalmare · 24/08/2025 16:16

Everything seems to be 'right wing' these days.

Rocknrollstar · 24/08/2025 16:18

I’m crying my eyes out and I haven’ t slept

menopausalmare · 24/08/2025 16:18

And 'smashed it', for doing an everyday task in the usual way.

HonoriaBulstrode · 24/08/2025 16:20

Instead of saying “you could try this” or “this worked for me”, they ask a stream of questions.

And then a couple of pages later, 'OP, why haven't you done xyz?' if OP hasn't leapt to follow all the suggestions/instructions.

Gotback · 24/08/2025 16:32

There was a mother on here a couple of months ago who said her child was "covered in blood" after an incident with another child. She later attached photos showing the kid had 2 small scratches, maybe 3 🙄

CrotchetyQuaver · 24/08/2025 18:36

Influencers being "obsessed" by something they're plugging...

“Flaunting her pins”

”putting on a leggy display”

for anybody who has legs.
