I don’t know which cat to gift my friend!

I always planned to give her the siamese. I was keeping the black and my 13yr old claimed the calico one. Whichever one I send, will have its own box. I just haven’t made the 3rd one yet (it’s so much BROWN!).

Now I’ve made them and I’m looking at them, I think my friend would prefer the black one, but I wanted to keep that one for myself! She doesn’t know about them so I don’t really want to ask her which one she wants as that would ruin the surprise. What do I do?

Cardboard boxes come in colours and patterns other than plain brown! If you’ve already started on it, you could add a stripe around the top of the box in a different colour to break up the browns.

@AintNobodyHereButUsChickens
I have a photo of my grandad in the 70s - he's in brown cords and a yellow jumper, on a brown armchair with 5 Siamese cats! Maybe the box could be yellow 😺

NeverDropYourMooncup · 01/04/2025 18:40

The Jiji/Toothless one is amazing. I could see DD2 adoring all of these, though. Just as likely taking them to bed, too.

She's only 26 in June.

That's a good idea to add a different colour along the top, if you've already started on a brown box or you don't have enough spare yarn to do a full box in another colour. If you happen to have blue yarn, I still think it would be the nicest colour for the siamese though! Or maybe green or grey, if you have those colours.

The siamese is my favourite too, I would cherish the little siamese cat if I had a friend crochet one for me. I'm sure your friend will love it.

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 01/04/2025 19:05

I haven’t started the next box yet, I might try and find a lighter brown. I still want it to look like a cardboard box, ideally.

Um, are you quite sure your friend will want a weird knitted cat?

I'll have it, if she doesn't.

I want the 'cat of colour', as I believe we refer to them nowadays.

My friend is 32 Grin she’s always sending me links to cute crochet animal patterns and things. She’s asked me to make her a couple of ‘Yip yips’ from Sesame street. I’m doing those and including some extras that she has no idea about. Including a teeny tiny frog, a cats bum coaster (that I have yet to make), a box cat and something else but I’m not sure what yet.

Really? You think he looks menacing? I can’t see it, he just looks cute to me 🤣

as the owner of a jet black cat who is an absolute sweetheart, I'd say no collar or nose needed, it's part of their charm being an enigmatic black hole.
thanks so much for the link!

LaurieFairyCake · 02/04/2025 08:08

Any chance you would make them for sale - I LOVE THEM SO MUCH 🥰

CourtenayDevon · 02/04/2025 08:28

Is this a stealth business selling thread? 😂

As beautiful as they are, I have to agree. I was given something similar and I'm buggered if I know what to do with it or where to put it. I feel terrible!

I would add a bright collar for the black one or a smiley nose maybe, otherwise it looks a bit menacing/sad.

Thank you for posting a pattern link.

I think he looks surprised or like he just seen something he wants to pounce on

iamnotalemon · 02/04/2025 12:53

They are lovely

Can I be your friend please? 😆😆. I love the idea of crocheted yip yips - my daughter used to love them. I haven’t thought of them in years but now I’ve got the bloody yip yip song stuck in my head 😆😆

You're incredibly rude.

As you can see lots of people like them and I'm sure the OP's friend will too!!

If they're not your thing, why couldn't you just click off the thread and move onto another one? Why did you have to be so nasty?

It's a valid question. Lots of people wouldn't like them (I'm one) and my experience of handmade gifts is that they are often more about the gifter than the giftee, and then the recipient is stuck with some niche product (+ guilt) they can't get rid of because it was handmade.

Great if op knows her friend will love one, nothing wrong with asking the question though.

Omg they are gorgeous! I would be happy with any of those if I was your friends! I’m a terrible one for anthropomorphising so I would be upset to separate them in case they were sad. 😂 is there secret option number 4 and you make another one to give her?

Are you me?!!

If the other poster had asked in a nice manner, maybe fair enough, but she didn't.

It was an unnecessary question anyway, as the OP wouldn't have been making it and sending it to her friend if she didn't think she'd like it, and someone being rude about it online isn't going to make her change her mind about sending a handmade gift anyway.

I sincerely hope nobody ever spends the time to handcraft you anything. It would be a waste.

Sorry but I think those are horrid! Each to their own clearly lots of people on this thread love them but they arent to everyones taste at all.

Just because someone doesnt share the same taste as you that doesnt mean they arent worthy of a handcrafted gift. I knit and crochet a lot but wouldnt expect someone to love something just because Ive made it - it may not be their taste at al and thats totally fine.

Also if you arent sure which your friend would like best how will anonymous people on mn who dont even know your friend have any better idea which they will like?

Growlybear83 · 02/04/2025 15:06

@Ineedascooter. I think your post is unnecessarily rude. The OP wasn’t asking for opinions on whether the cats were nice - she was asking for views on which she should give to a friend. 🙄

123feraverto · 02/04/2025 15:52

Love the Siamese one !
i think it’ll still look cute in the box
wish I could crochet !

I think they are all very gorgeous but I think the siamese is the cutest.

My mum ( sadly no longer around) would have loved to make these, she was fantastic at knitting and crocheting. She loved cats too!

I have a load of knitted and crocheted cakes she once made, she did about 3 sets of them in the end as everyone wanted them.

LushLemonTart · 02/04/2025 16:55

Only on Mumsnet can people come on and give their opinion that wasn't wanted. And be rude. Op asked which one for df not if you think they're awful.

Well done OP. I can never get my head around people being able to do stuff like this. I can paint but crocheting intricate items is amazing.

Igmum · 02/04/2025 18:35

They are so gorgeous. My favourites are the calico and the black one but they are all lovely (my DD would adore them). Your friend will be happy with any of these @AintNobodyHereButUsChickensand you are very talented

If you really do and don't have a disability that prevents you from using your hands in that way, you can learn. I tried a few times of people showing me, but I just couldn't get it, however there are so many tutorials online. You just need to find someone you click with and prepare your phone tablet for lotsof rewinding!!!
