Keir Starmer getting a roasting on X

BeckyBismuth · 30/03/2025 10:53

He's posted:

As the holy month of Ramadan ends, I wish Muslims in the UK and across the world a blessed and joyful Eid-al-Fitr. Eid Mubarak!

Nothing wrong there, and a sentiment I certainly share. He has however failed to acknowledge that today is also Mother's Day and it is also still Lent. He's getting such a lot of stick. I have to say it is a shocking lack of inclusivity.

Apparently he has, on Instagram.

I've posted here to discuss this. As you would have understood if you had properly read my OP, and "tried harder".

Yes, you were told by another poster about his Instagram post.

You came on here to make Keir Starmer look non inclusive and 'pandering to minorities'. It's pathetic.

What were you even doing on Musk's hate machine that is X, if not getting your little knickers in a twist?

FFS, the PM doesn't need to post about mother's day. His own mum is dead. I'm sure that he shows his appreciation to the mother of his children. I don't want or need him to acknowledge it for me - that's for my dc to think about.

This. Plus all PMs and politicians of all stripes get hostile replies on Twitter, whatever they post.

ItisIbeserk · 30/03/2025 11:13

Well, of course not. I’m just wondering what the Twitter people who are outaged want him to do that he hasn’t done. Other than not acknowledge a Muslim festival but it’s not about that, is it?

JillAndJenTheFlowerpotMen · 30/03/2025 11:14

To be honest my own teenagers have only just woken up and given me a card so it hadn’t occurred to me to wonder where the PM was with the choccies and flowers. Happy Eid to all mumsnetters who celebrate, and Happy Mothering Sunday to mothers.

(wonders if people wake up and try to find five things to complain about before breakfast)

It is a Christian celebration though. Mothering Sunday. Celebrated in all churches across England today. Of course it should be acknowledged.

I don't know what the Twitter people want. I don't have a problem with him posting an Eid greeting, though I do think he should have acknowledged both. @Yorkshirelass04 of course I read about him posting on Instagram on here. That's what a conversation and discussion is about, to find out information. And that's what a forum like this should be for.

Thanks for the "little knickers" comment too @Yorkshirelass04 . Much nicer than a spiteful comment about having big knickers, and you wouldn't be spiteful, would you.

OP posts:
MyMachine · 30/03/2025 11:16

A brief search showed me he also acknowledges Yom Kippur and other Jewish festivals.

So I think there's nothing to see here.

But you mentioned it being Lent which presumably means it’s being brought up by the hordes of Twitter users furious with Starmer. Surely they are saying what they think he should do about that? I’m not willing to look myself as every time I accidentally click on a Tweet nowadays I end up feeling like I need a shower.

EasternStandard · 30/03/2025 11:20

Posting that on here no problem. On X and he’ll get backlash. I’m not on there so don’t care but it’s all part of what people think of him. Well those on X anyway.

Yorkshirelass04 · 30/03/2025 11:21

Becky,

I hopefully your mind is now put at rest that the PM has both embraced religious holidays AND mother's day in his social media posts.

I know this was probably a tense moment for you upon waking this morning and checking his X feed. And seeing all the comments from trolls - must have been disheartening. But we are happy to have has this conversation with you to confirm.

I sincerely hope you can get on with your Sunday. The sun is shining too!

MurdoMunro · 30/03/2025 11:22

Hey, crabs, keep fighting in the bucket eh.

People puffing and shouting about tiny little details and participating in nothing, contributing nothing, making no change, doing nothing constructive for society or even their own communities of interest. I care nothing for their opinions on anything.

Twitter corals all the pub bores into one shitty pub, I’m grateful for that service

TheStigarette · 30/03/2025 11:22

Absolute non story. Just stop.

Simonjt · 30/03/2025 11:25

Having a quick scan of twitter, no one is roasting him, there a fair few racists with questionable literacy levels spitting their dummies out because non-white people and non-christians exist, despite the fact that they clearly don’t have the required reading age for the bible.

legsekeven · 30/03/2025 11:28

well im shocked he’s still posting on twitter/x. I thought most people had left it

There are some of those, yes, I've had a look. Some other posts are more measured.

Presumably all those Twitter users fuming about Lent not getting a mention are observing Lenten fasting and abstinence from festivities @BeckyBismuth ?

So not taking Mum out for a slap up meal nor buying her cards and presents?

He's not Muslim either but...

Historically, yes, it's a Christian celebration that actually had nothing to do with mothers. I'm not sure that many people these days mark the day by returning to their ""mother church"? It has now just become a commercial thing for most.

In any case, it seems that the PM did post about mother's day in any case, so you can pack away your indignation now and save it for another day.

BeckyBismuth · 30/03/2025 11:35

SunnieShine · 30/03/2025 11:30

He's not Muslim either but...

... he's the leader of this country which has about 6.5% of the population following Islam as a religion according to the last census, so it's fair that he says this, but the annoyance I saw on Twitter was about not including Mothers Day which falls on the same day. There is room for everything!

MurdoMunro · 30/03/2025 11:36

So some Twitter twats are all riled up as usual. Others are going meh. There’s a back and forth going on over there so why on earth bring it here for a rehash? Insert my wide eyed and completely innocent tone, tinkly voice, head tilt, etc etc for effect.

Re his own mother, which most won’t know about, posting on issues as a PM doesn’t usually follow that kind of personal reasoning.

What are you suggesting about tinkly laugh etc?

The atheists were determined to eradicate Christianity from the UK. What did they think would take its place? Nature abhors a vacuum. Let's see if they're happy with its replacement.

I think she's suggesting that you know exactly what your doing posting this on here. Which is to stir up dissent.
