The weird smell from minted clothes

Sheldonsheher · 27/03/2025 15:55

every time I buy something from Vinted even if “new” it seems to have this weird overpowering chemical smell. is it febreeze? Or conditioner? Even when you wash it does not come out. Is there any way to get rid of this smell?

Why do people make clothes smell like This? It’s putting me off buying as I don’t like the chemical smell and it doesn’t seem to wash out?

I’ve had this & put it down to the plastic mailing bags that are used, anything I buy I always machine wash & it’s fine.

Sheldonsheher · 27/03/2025 16:11

I don’t think it’s that because clothes bought new from stores do not smell like this. Also I have washed but I can still smell the chemical smell?

Febreeze it should be banned it is the worst smell ever.

I have no idea why so many sellers on vinted use it - just send clean clothes.

Some cheap parcel bags also stink of smoke which then permeates the item.

BurntBroccoli · 27/03/2025 16:26

Loads of people use Febreeze! A couple of washes on a long programme with conditioner usually sorts it out.

Sheldonsheher · 27/03/2025 16:49

It should be banned if it’s febreeze. It is really hard to get rid off. I’m not keen on chemical smells in general smells toxic.

I think it’s Febreeze. It takes a good few washes to dissipate and if you wash the ‘new’ Vinted item with your other clothes, it makes them smell too. I’m not a fabric conditioner / air freshener kind of person so I can’t stand it either.

Sheldonsheher · 27/03/2025 20:08

Yes I noticed that if you wash other things the smell goes through your whole wash. What are people thinking. Do they febreeze their house or only Vinted things?

I’ve never had this from Vinted (I buy quite a lot) but it would annoy me too!

BigBurrata · 27/03/2025 20:57

I bought a cotton dress on eBay once and it had a strange pepperminty smell - I don’t know if it was Febreze or some kind of fabric conditioner. I washed it several times, but still smelt as strong.
That did put me off buying second hand online for quite some time.

Aspotofgardening · 27/03/2025 21:00

Everything smells the same from Vinted. I doubt it’s febreze as even toys I’ve purchased smell the exact same. I’ve never worked it out. How can everything smell the same from different houses?

Normallynumb · 27/03/2025 22:34

I must be lucky as despite buying clothing pretty much weekly I’ve never had this
straight on a hot wash and all good.
I’ve also had some very random packaging ( cat food box to name one)

Thelnebriati · 27/03/2025 23:13

If its not Febreeze it might be Ariel gel laundry liquid, its really strong. A peppermint smell might be a laundry liquid with eucalyptus, its supposed to smell fresh.

Twinkletoes10 · 28/03/2025 01:46

I hate strong smells and people always send stuff stinking! Is it so they don't need to wash it, cover up a musty smell with a spray? Sometimes they wash the item(s) with a really strong fabric conditioner. It never fully seems to come out..both scenarios give me headaches! no need for it!

franke · 28/03/2025 02:04

Yes, it annoys me too. I think it's used to mask that charity shop smell you sometimes get with old clothes. I had to have a coat dry cleaned to get rid of the smell. With other items, I give them a really long soak in mild detergent and line dry if possible. But as others have said, it can take several washes.

PoopingAllTheWay · 28/03/2025 02:07

Wash as normal but with a little extra strong washing powder and antibacterial laundry cleanser

OR

Soak in a bath with a bath bomb for afew hours then wash as normal

Hemlocked · 28/03/2025 02:07

Yes. I bought a cashmere jumper which is basically ruined because of the smell (I am assuming febreeze). It's not the sort of thing you can just casually throw in the wash a few times.

Sheldonsheher · 28/03/2025 06:43

Yes also if you buy something new with tags. Why then spray it with febreeze? Especially if it’s fabric you can’t wash soak. Next time I dare to buy I might plead please no febreeze or conditioner on the item. Do people go
atound with this on their normal clothes?

Yes, that smell of mint is really hard to shift 😆 (Of course I knew what you meant in your title, OP, but it did make me smile.)

Some do.

I hate those laundry scent boosters - I want my laundry to smell clean, and not to reek of softener...

I want to smell of my bloody expensive light perfume - not sodding Lenor!

ItsaMeMummio · 28/03/2025 07:01

It'll be those foul unstoppables. A wash in plain water then hanging outside to dry should sort it.

@Hemlockedif you hang it outside for a week (not in heavy rain but a bit of drizzle won't hurt it) the smell will go.

SirRaymondClench · 28/03/2025 07:24

I don't know but when I've bought stuff from Vinted it usually reeks of their perfume.

I'm really sensitive to smells and perfume makes me gak! 😩

MightyBust · 28/03/2025 07:27

I think other people wear a lot of perfume (I wear some once in a blue moon), and also use heavily scented washing powder and fabric conditioner etc.

I don't like using a lot of chemicals, so I think I really notice these smells on clothes.

Aspotofgardening · 28/03/2025 07:37

It really cannot be febreeze as everyone is saying. Everything from Vinted has the same smell. I buy a lot of toys second hand from
Vinted and every single one smells the same as the clothes. It’s completely weird and I can’t figure out why that would be.

BertieBotts · 28/03/2025 07:37

Unstoppables and perfume. DS1 wears a lot of scent, and often if he washes or dries his stuff with ours I notice that the perfume hasn't fully washed out of his clothes even though they seem otherwise clean.

Smell the unstoppables in the shop next time you're in the washing stuff aisle and you'll be able to see if it's that.

BertieBotts · 28/03/2025 07:38

I don't notice everything having the same scent though. But if you're sensitive to laundry perfumes then they probably would all smell similar.
