Does anyone else find the smell of Lillies horribly overpowering?

DH got me a beautiful bouquet of flowers for my birthday last week, a mix of roses, lillies and greenery.

We have had to move them from one room to the other because I am finding the stench of the Lillies just too much. I am in perimenopause and I do now seem to have an over sensitive sense of smell these days but the perfume from these flowers blows my head off and is leaving me with a raspy feeling in my throat. I am sadly going to have to remove the Lillies which is a shame.

Does anyone else feel this about Lillies?

Lots of people do. I love them though.

cramptramp · 25/03/2025 08:32

I hate the smell of lillies! And daffodils.

springintoaction321 · 25/03/2025 08:32

Lilies - lovely

Titasaducksarse · 25/03/2025 08:33

I don't like it. My MIL loves then and house smells overpoweringly of them.

ThisUsernameIsAvailabl · 25/03/2025 08:33

Yes I absolutely hate the smell. Like overpowering perfume. I first went off them when I was pregnant 25 years ago and have hated them ever since.

museumum · 25/03/2025 08:33

Yes. I don’t like it. I think you can cut the stamen out and that reduces it a lot.

vodkaredbullgirl · 25/03/2025 08:33

Hate the smell, far too overpowering.

Oh, I may try that before throwing them out.

Cut the stamens(?) out, the orange bits that stick out the middle with the dust that ruins your clothes. That’s where the smell is, they’ll still look lovely but less smelly

JitterbugFairy · 25/03/2025 08:34

The smell reminds me of funeral parlours 😔

Darby3785 · 25/03/2025 08:35

Yes I'm the same. I always have been!

I find the smell too overpowering, it gives me a headache and a sore throat!

MoodEnhancer · 25/03/2025 08:35

I like the smell, but agree it is very strong. So strong, in fact, that I don’t keep them in the dining room as I think they affect how food tastes.

I have just cut them all off. Hopefully that may help the problem.

I agree. I have lots of flowers in the house, but not lilies. I’m not keen on the smell
from daffodils either.

doodahdayy · 25/03/2025 08:36

I can’t stand the smell either

SidekickSylvia · 25/03/2025 08:36

They give me an instant headache. They're okay when closed, but as soon as they open I have to take them outside (if they're in a bouquet). It's a shame because I think they look lovely.

528htz · 25/03/2025 08:37

They're horrible and I always associate them with death and funerals. The smell used to set my sinusitis off when I was working in the care homes.

hereismydog · 25/03/2025 08:37

I hate them, they smell waxy and pissy to me Grin we have cats though so if I’m ever lucky enough to receive flowers from anybody, they don’t get me lilies anyway. If any lilies do happen to sneak into a bouquet, I throw them out straight away as one of my cats is a muncher!

BeaAndBen · 25/03/2025 08:39

Hate them. They are ok outside where the smell dissipates but in an enclosed environment they are a nightmare.

Same here. (Also the look of gladioli, the world’s most depressing flowers.)

What does Dame Edna say about gladioli?

I just think they look as if they were bred specifically to lie on a coffin lid. Especially the nasty flesh-coloured ones. Ew.
