Does anyone else find the smell of Lillies horribly overpowering?

DH got me a beautiful bouquet of flowers for my birthday last week, a mix of roses, lillies and greenery.

We have had to move them from one room to the other because I am finding the stench of the Lillies just too much. I am in perimenopause and I do now seem to have an over sensitive sense of smell these days but the perfume from these flowers blows my head off and is leaving me with a raspy feeling in my throat. I am sadly going to have to remove the Lillies which is a shame.

Does anyone else feel this about Lillies?

I love the scent of Lillie’s and when they’re in season here I always have a vase full of them but the very strong scent isn’t for everyone.

I hate them, they smell waxy and pissy to me Grin we have cats though so if I’m ever lucky enough to receive flowers from anybody, they don’t get me lilies anyway. If any lilies do happen to sneak into a bouquet, I throw them out straight away as one of my cats is a muncher!

Same! I’m very limited in what I can have due to munching! I don’t like lilies much anyway - I love stocks and they smell beautiful and cats can eat them if so inclined 😺

What perfume scent are people picking up because lillies stink like feet to me?

To me they smell of a really strong old lady kind of perfume. I used to work with a lady how would spray herself all over with this awful M&S perfume (think it was called Florentyna or something similar) it smells like Lillies to me. I'd go home every day feeling like crap.

What does Dame Edna say about gladioli?

I just think they look as if they were bred specifically to lie on a coffin lid. Especially the nasty flesh-coloured ones. Ew.

She used to hold them as a prop.

Can you not gift them to someone? It seems such a shame to have such a beautiful bunch of flowers being so reviled …

I like the look of them, but they smell like pee 🤢

StrangewaysHereWeCome · 25/03/2025 10:41

I really like the smell of lilies, but can't have one as one of my idiot cats sticks her face right in them.

Agree about daffodils though - they are so beautiful but seem to stink of wee after about 24 hours.

I'm always quietly dismayed when I receive flowers with lilies in, both because of the smell and I have a cat. I always cut out the stamens but they still pong, amd I have to ensure the cat can't reach them.

Can’t beat the smell of a lily or two here but we have cats so I may be misremembering.

However this thread has reminded me of my Aunt’s continual moan about her name being misspelled. All we’d hear is ‘it’s Lily like the flower’. Spelling is about 50/50 so she was unreasonable. (Also my Aunt Lilian) 😆😆😆😆

I love the smell - and daffodils too.

Rictasmorticia · 25/03/2025 11:48

Mother’s Day looming and I know the bouquet will contain Lilly. I put them in the garden where I can look at them without the smell
