China has not sent military personnel to take part in the war in Ukraine, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian stated.
“The Chinese government has consistently instructed its citizens to avoid conflict zones in Ukraine and to stay out of military operations on either side,” he said during a briefing.

Britain is warning that Vladimir Putin sees the Western Balkans as his next “playground,” according to Politico.
Citing British Defense Secretary David Lammy, the publication notes that while Europe is focused on Ukraine, tensions are rising in the Western Balkans — and Putin may seize the opportunity to stir division in the former Yugoslavia.
“Putin’s goal is to keep the region unstable,” Lammy said. “He benefits from the Western Balkans being on edge, from a destabilized population, and from waging cyber and hybrid warfare.”
To counter this, the UK is pushing for all six states in the region to join the European Union, aiming to block Russian influence.

Ukraine needs at least ten more Patriot systems, President Zelenskyy said.

On Kinburn Spit, the only part of the Mykolaiv region still under occupation, Ukrainian drones are dropping propaganda leaflets. These leaflets contain instructions for Russian soldiers on how to surrender safely and correctly.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces have successfully destroyed a Russian Tu-22M3 long-range bomber using a drone, according to Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi.
The estimated cost of the Tu-22M3 bomber is around $100 million.

Since the beginning of 2025, Ukraine has received 150 Roshel MRAPs from the United States, with another 40 already en route, according to the U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine.

China was AWARE of its citizens’ participation in the war against Ukraine on the side of Russia, Zelensky said during a meeting with journalists.

Zelensky said Russia (www.kyivpost.com/post/50501) was “dragging” China into the war in Ukraine, accusing Beijing of knowingly allowing dozens of its citizens to be recruited by Moscow’s army to fight.

Beijing has dismissed (www.kyivpost.com/post/50546) claims that more than a hundred Chinese fighters serve in the Russian Armed Forces as “irresponsible remarks” after two were captured by Kyiv.

🇵🇱 Polish Defense Minister Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that the relocation of U.S. troops from the Jasionka airport, a key hub for aid to Ukraine, is a positive development for Poland.
“The status of American forces in Poland, although unchanged, is now more focused on Poland itself rather than aid to Ukraine, so this is a change for the better,” he said.

Six more children have been rescued from occupation thanks to the Bring Kids Back UA and Save Ukraine initiatives.
Russian occupiers tortured the children’s parents, taught them to hate Ukraine in school, and social services attempted to take the children away from their families.

Volodymyr Zelensky revealed how Russia is trying to reclaim its frozen assets:
▪️ Through its agents of influence in the EU, Russia pushes to lift sanctions on specific oligarchs who hold parts of the frozen funds — for example, $5 billion;
▪️ It then sells the rights to those funds as debt at a discount to partners in the Middle East — for instance, for $3 billion;
▪️ After that, Arab businessmen demand that European authorities return the full $5 billion as a debt they’ve acquired.
Ukraine is aware of these schemes and is working with European partners to prevent them.

Former Chief of Staff of Azov’s 12th Special Forces Brigade Calls for Commander-in-Chief Syrskyi to Resign
Former chief of staff of the 12th Special Forces Brigade “Azov,” Bohdan Krotevych, has publicly called for the resignation of Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi. He argues that Syrskyi lacks strategic vision and endangers the lives of Ukrainian soldiers by issuing what he described as “almost criminal” orders.
Krotevych stated that while in service, he too received increasingly questionable orders from top military leadership — including from the Commander-in-Chief’s headquarters — which he could not, in good conscience, carry out.
In an interview with The Guardian, Krotevych also announced his plans to establish a private organization named the Strategic Operational Intelligence Agency (SOIA). The agency will collect intelligence on Russia, Belarus, North Korea, and other hostile nations, while also acting as an expert liaison with Western partners.
He emphasized that he is not affiliated with former Commander-in-Chief and current Ukrainian ambassador to the UK Valerii Zaluzhnyi and that he has no intention of entering politics himself.

The Economist has a good article on the current state of the war, militarily. This link should get you around the paywall.

Ukraine thinks it can hold off Russia as long as it needs to - Russia may have Chinese volunteers, but Ukraine has drones.

The headline may be a tad optimistic, but fortunately for Ukraine, the Russians don't have a good countermeasure for the newer drones and they don't have sufficient combat capacity or effectiveness to take the initiative on a large scale.

@MissConductUS the link doesnt get me around the paywall. Is it possible to try again or to sum it up ?

I'm not sure if it will work, the Economist seems to be much tighter about sharing than the WSJ. Here's the text:

LAST MONTH Russia drove Ukrainian forces out of most of the territory in Russia’s Kursk region that they had seized the previous August. The Russians deployed their own elite brigades, North Korean troops and a new weapon—fibre-optic drones that are controlled by a long, lightweight filament rather than by radio signals, making them impossible to jam. Now the fighting has spilled back over the border into Ukraine. Settlements close to the frontier are being pummelled, and several thousand civilians have fled or been evacuated. Some Russian assault units have crossed the border—though so far, insists Volodymyr Artyukh, the head of Sumy province’s military administration, “they have been eliminated.”

Ukrainian troops still hold slivers of territory inside Russia. In a diversionary attack in the last week of March, they advanced over the border into the neighbouring Belgorod region. Russian forces are bombing the towns and villages inside Ukraine through which Ukrainian forces passed to get to Belgorod. To the east, meanwhile, in the Donbas region, the fighting continues. On April 8th Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine’s president, said Ukrainian forces had captured two Chinese citizens fighting with the Russians—confirming months-old reports from other foreign prisoners of war of a Chinese presence. Mr Zelensky said he would raise the issue with China’s government.
Read more of our recent coverage of the Ukraine war

Many of those fleeing the border regions near Kursk end up in Sumy, a modest city 23km south of the border with a prewar population of about 250,000. Nadia Gorbliuk, aged 64, was evacuated from the rural village of Uhroidy. She had not wanted to leave her livestock, she says, bursting into tears: as the bombs fell she thought: “This is my destiny, to die with my turkeys!” When soldiers ordered her to leave, she kissed the birds farewell. All nine of them, she has since heard, were evacuated to safety.

Russia tried and failed to seize Sumy in February 2022, at the start of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Within six weeks its forces had been driven out of the entire region. Now, says Mr Zelensky, Russia is preparing for a new offensive here. It is unclear whether that might entail a real effort to occupy the area, or simply a relentless series of attacks aimed at tying down Ukrainian troops and creating a buffer zone.
Map: The Economist
Access to the city is strictly controlled by the SBU, Ukraine’s domestic intelligence service. Beyond the checkpoints, new bunkers, trenches and defensive lines can be seen slicing across the fields which surround the city. Sumy itself is bustling: despite the increase in attacks, its population has grown since the war’s start, says Mr Artyukh. The number of displaced people arriving from border regions is double that of former residents who have left. He interrupts the conversation periodically to identify background noises: first the boom of something outgoing; then two low roars from Ukrainian jets overhead, one a Soviet-era MiG, the other an American-made F-16.

In the first three months of the year the Sumy region was hit by 8,925 drones, glide bombs and other missiles, up from 3,693 in the same period last year, says Mr Artyukh. Yet there is no sign of panic in the city. It is too well-defended for the Russians to take, says Yurii Butuzov, a military analyst. He thinks their current aim is to retake the hills along the Russian side of the border still occupied by Ukrainian forces.

Control of those hilltops would make it easier for them to use drones to try to establish a 10km-wide, Russian-controlled buffer zone inside Ukraine. That, says Mr Butuzov, would allow the Russians to redeploy most of the troops fighting here to eastern Donbas. Russia has officially annexed that region, but virtually no countries recognise its claim, and some of it remains under Ukrainian control. “Donbas is a strategic goal for Putin,” says Mr Butuzov.

It is unclear whether the traumatised evacuees from border towns and villages will ever return home. Ms Gorbliuk is now sleeping in a former clinic with other evacuees, cared for by Pluriton, an organisation which helps the displaced. It is run by Kateryna Arisoy, herself a refugee from Donbas. Many elderly evacuees whose lives revolved around their homes, gardens and animals find it impossible to adapt once uprooted, she says: they develop “health conditions, mental problems and die”.

Many in Sumy would welcome a ceasefire, but no one is counting on one. The residents are phlegmatic; the mood is that life must go on. The same holds for Kharkiv, the much bigger city to Sumy’s south-east. On a Saturday afternoon dozens of energetic pensioners bopped lustily to music in the city’s central Freedom Square. The dance event has gone on every weekend for more than a decade; it moved to the square after the park where it was previously held was bombed twice.

Further east, in a village between the Russian border and the frontline region of Kupiansk, soldiers from a drone unit known as Typhoon said things were quiet. No new Russian offensive was expected, and they were preparing to redeploy to Pokrovsk, a besieged town in Donbas. In the last month the unit has started using its own fibre-optic drones, says Mihailo, its commander—a couple of months after the Russians got them.

The drones will make it even harder for soldiers or vehicles to move along the front lines than it is now, says Mihailo. That means fewer soldiers are required to man positions. Where six months ago Ukraine’s forces worried that the enemy was slowly rolling them back, they now think that drones and well-prepared defensive positions can hold the Russians off. Indeed, Russian forces have made very little progress for well over two years. Whether a ceasefire deal will come is uncertain. Ukraine is relying on its own strengths. ■

Key Takeaways:

  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on April 9 that Ukraine is interested in purchasing a large package of weapons from the United States, possibly within the framework of a future US-Ukraine mineral deal, as part of Ukrainian efforts to obtain security guarantees that would deter a future Russian invasion.
  • Russia’s continued unsubstantiated accusations of Ukrainian violations of the energy strike ceasefire - despite the lack of any publicly available official ceasefire agreement – demonstrate how Russia will likely act in the event that Russia accepts the ground ceasefire to which Ukraine and the United States have already agreed
  • Russia continues to use bilateral talks with the United States to delay negotiations about the war in Ukraine, suggesting that the Kremlin remains uninterested in serious peace negotiations to end the war.
  • Russia is reportedly using social media and financial incentives to recruit Chinese nationals to voluntarily join the Russian military.
  • Russian forces reportedly recently executed a wounded Ukrainian prisoner of war (POW) in the Lyman direction.
  • The Kremlin continues to use narratives it has historically used against Ukraine to set conditions to justify possible future aggression against Estonia.
  • Ukrainian forces recently advanced near Chasiv Yar, and Russian forces advanced near Toretsk and Pokrovsk.
  • A Russian insider source claimed that Russian authorities are preparing a dedicated position in Russian regional governments that will oversee veterans' affairs, and the federal government may include similar positions in the future.

Chinese nationals fighting on Russia’s side in Ukraine are mercenaries, according to U.S. officials — Reuters.

Admiral Samuel Paparo, head of U.S. forces in the Indo-Pacific, confirmed that Ukrainian forces had captured two Chinese nationals in eastern Ukraine. This followed President Zelenskyy’s statement that Ukraine had identified 155 Chinese fighters aligned with Russia.
China, which maintains an “unlimited” partnership with Russia and has avoided criticizing the invasion, called Zelenskyy’s remarks “irresponsible” and denied involvement in the conflict.
U.S. officials, speaking anonymously, said the Chinese fighters seemed poorly trained and had no real impact on Russian military operations.
A former Western intelligence official told Reuters that around 200 Chinese mercenaries are fighting for Russia, without official ties to the Chinese government. However, Chinese military officers—approved by Beijing—are reportedly traveling near the front lines to study Russian tactics. “They’re absolutely there by agreement,” the source said.

🇪🇪 Estonia has detained a Russian “shadow” tanker in the Baltic Sea for the first time since the war began.
The tanker KIWALA, en route to Ust-Luga, was stopped off Estonia’s coast. On board were 24 people, including a Chinese captain and, reportedly, citizens of Mauritania.
The ship was flying the flag of Djibouti, but Djiboutian authorities deny any connection to it.
Estonia detained the vessel for inspection, stating it falls under sanctions.

🇩🇪 The war in Ukraine has revealed only partial suitability of German weapons for combat — Spiegel
According to the deputy military attaché of the German embassy in Kyiv, the Panzerhaubitze 2000 exhibits “such a high level of technical vulnerability that its combat readiness is seriously questionable.”
The report states that the Leopard 1A5 main battle tank, while proving “reliable” on the battlefield, is often used only as improvised artillery due to its weak armor. Meanwhile, the more advanced Leopard 2A6 is so expensive to maintain that repairs near the frontline are often impossible.
The assessment of modern air defense systems was also mixed. While the IRIS-T system is considered very effective, the cost of its munitions is extremely high and “they are not available in sufficient quantities.”
However, one of the oldest weapons systems, the Gepard anti-aircraft gun, has received widespread praise.

Breakthrough in U.S.-Ukraine negotiations over access to natural resources unlikely – Reuters
The latest draft of the agreement envisions that the U.S. would receive priority access to Ukrainian mineral resources, and all revenue — both from state-owned and private companies — would be directed into a joint investment fund.
At the same time, the agreement contains no security guarantees for Ukraine — a key demand from the Ukrainian government.

Trump wrote that “Russia must start acting.”
“Too many people are dying — thousands every week — in a terrible and senseless war. A war that never should have happened, and wouldn’t have happened if I were president,” said the U.S. President.
▪️Earlier, Donald Trump had threatened to impose sweeping sanctions against Russia — including banking restrictions and new tariffs — until a ceasefire and peace deal with Ukraine are reached.
▪️Today marks one month since Russia rejected the U.S. proposal for a temporary ceasefire.

Witkoff told Trump that the fastest way to achieve a ceasefire is to give Russia control over four Ukrainian regions, Reuters reports, citing sources.
Last week, following a meeting with Russian negotiator Kirill Dmitriev, Trump’s representative conveyed a clear message: The quickest path to ending the war in Ukraine would be to support a strategy that grants Russia control over Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia regions.
However, Keith Kellogg, the U.S. President’s special representative for Ukraine, opposed Witkoff’s proposal during a meeting with Trump. He emphasized that while Ukraine may be open to negotiations under certain conditions related to territories, it would never unilaterally relinquish full sovereignty over these lands.
Ultimately, Trump made no decision to change the current U.S. strategy following the meeting.

Russian state media have released photos of Putin’s meeting with Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff.
The two reportedly spent over four hours in talks at the Kremlin.

Seen discussion on this, if I've understood the debate correctly the main problem appears to be an overly engineered overly complex autoloader, @MissConductUS may know more.

"The assessment of modern air defense systems was also mixed. While the IRIS-T system is considered very effective, the cost of its munitions is extremely high and “they are not available in sufficient quantities.”

This conflict has really highlighted this particular issue...having to fire perhaps several rounds of Gucci missles each costing tens/hundreds of thousands of $ that take weeks to produce against one drone worth maybe a few hundred $ that was knocked together on a kitchen table is not sustainable.

I gather the USAF or USN may have already deployed/done trials with a very basic air to air guided missile to get around the problem, I'll see if I can find details.

However, one of the oldest weapons systems, the Gepard anti-aircraft gun, has received widespread praise.

Sometimes there's no substitute for lots of realtively cheap undecoyable lead.

MissConductUS · 12/04/2025 11:33

Seen discussion on this, if I've understood the debate correctly the main problem appears to be an overly engineered overly complex autoloader, may know more.

Autoloaders have always been somewhat problematic. They take up a lot of space inside the vehicle, it's difficult to design one that can easily switch between different types of rounds, and they require the rounds to be stored in the same space the crew occupies. The worst drawback is that if they jam or otherwise malfunction in combat, you've lost the ability to fire the main gun.

For these reasons, the American Abrams tank has never had an autoloader. Crew safety is a big concern. In the Abrams, main gun rounds are stored in an armored compartment designed to blow out, away from the crew if a round explodes. In Russian tanks, which do have autoloaders, the rounds are stored in a circular rack directly under the turret. If the hull of the tank is penetrated by an enemy round or ATGM like the Javelin, the compression and blast will detonate the rounds stored in the rack. This is what causes the turret of the tank to detach and go flying into the air. There are many videos of Russian tanks showing the turret, and often the bodies of the crew members, flying a hundred meters or more into the air when hit by enemy fire.

Oddly, the Panzerhaubitze 2000 is designed for a crew of five, including two loaders. If its autoloader is highly complex and digitally controlled, it's going to be problematic, especially in combat conditions. I guess that's why they include two human loaders in the crew. Simpler is often better in combat.

MissConductUS · 12/04/2025 11:50

I gather the USAF or USN may have already deployed/done trials with a very basic air to air guided missile to get around the problem, I'll see if I can find details.

The Raytheon Coyote is the primary new weapon for ground forces to use against drones:

The combat-proven Coyote® effector is a low-cost, rail-launched missile variant with a boost rocket motor and a turbine engine for high-speed counter-unmanned aircraft system (C-UAS) and launched effects (LE) missions.

It's primarily ground to air, although I see that it's also mountable on a helicopter.

The AGR-20 Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) has also seen combat use in an air-to-air role, most recently against the Houthi drones. To adapt the venerable Hydra unguided air-to-ground missile for anti-drone use, they've cleverly added a guidance package. And it's cheap, relatively speaking, at about $25k per round.

I did not expect to wake up on a Saturday and have my military brain engaged with these questions, but I am pleased I could shed some light on them. 😁

Coyote UAS

The Coyote® unmanned aircraft system is an expendable system that's deployed from an A-size sonobuoy tube or Common Launch Tube to perform intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions while the host aircraft remains in safe airspace.
