As in the fabric place.

I just called it abba-carn
But now I'm in an argument with my colleague who says is abba-can.

How do you pronounce it?

OP posts:
HelpMeMNet · 22/03/2025 13:41

Never heard of it.

Whycanineverthinkofone · 22/03/2025 13:43

not heard of it but I’d pronounce that Ay-backharn

Holymotherforkingshirtballs · 22/03/2025 13:45

We always said abba-can but abba-carn makes sense too.

BeaAndBen · 22/03/2025 13:47

Aber-can

Love it there, I can spend hours. It's in the arse end of nowhere in Mostyn, but wotrth the trip.

Dearg · 22/03/2025 13:49

Aba -can.

But I am Scottish so we treat ‘r’ differently as I understand it.

Ursulla · 22/03/2025 13:50

Is it in Russia?

BeaAndBen · 22/03/2025 13:59

Ursulla · 22/03/2025 13:50

Is it in Russia?

It's in Mostyn, North Wales. They have a bunch of branches in the North West like Birkenhead, Bolton, Chester etc.

Clearinguptheclutter · 22/03/2025 14:07

grew up near it
ABBA-can

Ursulla · 22/03/2025 14:08

Wow, it sounds way more exotic than Wales.

Maybe called after the textile sculptures of Magdalena Abakanowicz? She called them ‘Abakans’. it was an astonishing show.

I used to visit the one in wales all the time. I’m sure it’s Abba-khan

NeverDropYourMooncup · 22/03/2025 15:00

Depends upon whether I've been watching Star Trek or not.

A-ber-KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN.

GrandTheftWalrus · 22/03/2025 15:14

I thought it said azkaban.

MrsCarson · 22/03/2025 15:48

Same as you OP Abba Carn
I loved going there as a kid for some reason. There may have been a hot dog van back in the 70's

BrightOrangeDahlias · 22/03/2025 16:05

Same as you, op. The "h" in khan turns it from "can" into "carn" imo. I love a good rummage too!

Edited

There is one in Chester too, so I assume there some more?

TheBirdintheCave · 22/03/2025 16:58

I’ve used both pronunciations before. We have one in Liverpool. Man I love (and miss!) that place. Nothing like it down here in Sussex 😭

No it’s named after the founder and family. Michael Abakhan.

They pronounce it the way the OPs colleague does so who am I to argue?

Was literally thinking about that show yesterday. Astonishing is the word. And wonderful and amazing.
Truly brilliant.
And yes I wondered if a fabric place with that name might have been deliberately named in her honour.

There is no “r” in it so why do people put it in?
abba-can

NefiBlw · 22/03/2025 17:18

Abba can.

Yep, same here. I walked past one of their English branches today and in my head called it Abercarn.

FetidMoppet · 22/03/2025 17:21

Abba can here too

IamSmarticus · 22/03/2025 18:53

There is a branch in my city - we pronounce it abba-carn
