Hacked Facebook account - anyone managed to solve this?

Having major issues with my Facebook account. Had a few emails in the past week to say someone had tried to login from locations that weren’t me, so of course changed my password. Then yesterday I tried to login and it said my account had been suspended, due to activity that breached their rules on a linked Instagram account that isn’t mine. I’ve tried all the options on Facebook, nothing works, I’m going round in circles. My husband has also tried. I’ve googled and watched videos on how to supposedly solve this, nothing. One suggested option is to sign up to a (paid) verified Meta account, which then apparently gives you some kind of support. I’d rather not do this, but running out of ideas. I know there are bigger fish to fry, but I’m sad about possibly losing all those memories. Has anyone had this issue and found a solution? I’d be so grateful for any help.

No but bumping as happened to a friend and he’s not got access yet!

Thisissuss · 22/03/2025 01:42

I had this happen about a year ago and tried to change password but it wouldn't believe I am me! I have actually just given in to it and dropped fb. I now have set all alerts to spam, but no one has posted on my account - just seemed to want to have access (nothing on there I'm bothered about). Everyone I know knows I was coming off it anyway. Was a very effective way of curtailing my use of social media!

FrothyCothy · 22/03/2025 02:06

Happened to DH and Facebook deleted his account. They did send him a link to download everything on his profile but wouldn’t reinstate the account. A bit gutted really as all the memories posts are lost 😞

upsanddownsandroundabouts · 22/03/2025 06:56

It happened to me about 6 months ago. I had two factor authentication on too. I had exactly the same message- that my account had been linked to an Instagram page that had breached standards and been suspended. I don’t do instagram, I’ve never had an account.
ive given up on Facebook now. I couldn’t find a way to appeal or get the account back.
Fortunately, I’d copied all my photos off Facebook about a year earlier- all the pics of the DCs when they were small

NuzzleandScratch · 22/03/2025 07:16

Thanks for the replies, does sound pretty hopeless. 😔 I do have the pics posted, but it isn’t the same. I don’t have the best memory, so this stuff will simply be gone now. I’m not bothered about posting new stuff there anyway. Also use Facebook marketplace.

Happened to me 18m ago. Never got access again. Was really upsetting

How funny, I knew loads of people were dropping fb anyway but I wonder if this is actually more of an issue. You'd think they'd want to keep people and reduce the hacking rather than making it impossible to get an account back.

I think I am lucky in that I actually also nearly died last year, so for me not having fb was the last of my worries and really focused my mind on what is important. As I said, anyone I know on there says it is dead anyway so I do feel OK about it. If you have google pictures maybe you can go through and do some photobooks using snapfish or similar?

It's happened to my husband in the last couple of months. The people responsible for doing it have taken his instagram as well as they are linked and managed to change everything so he can't even prove its not him. He doesn't have access at all and Meta is not interested in helping. The whole report process doesn't even seem to work properly. He opened another Facebook to try to send complaints and make reports about his old account, Facebook immediately closed it down as fraudulent! I think he's just given up on it now tbh.

NuzzleandScratch · 22/03/2025 10:28

Thanks all, yes completely appreciate worse things happen at sea. But I’d at least like to try and get it back, and at this point, I can’t even seem to do that. I did find an appeals email address, so might try that. I had the same thought, that surely it’s not in Facebook’s interest to just lose people when this happens, but their page that’s supposed to help when you’ve been hacked just lead you round in circles.

Do you have a copy of the email
address?

Mamaof2cuties · 26/03/2025 03:30

I had the same. Email hacked overnight of 21st March. They used 2FA and changed email address on Facebook. By the morning, Facebook account was suspended due to a linked Instagram account that I know nothing about. Asked to appeal suspension via Instagram. There's no link or clue on how to appeal on Instagram. My actual linked Instagram account still works and says my account is fine, no violations.

Tried the 'my account is hacked' link, it says doesn't recognise my device. The device I have Facebook app on and used the day before. I tried the 'someone's using my name' link to report. It requires a username which you can only get by viewing the profile. My whole profile is gone. Friends can't see it.

I've tried to get my Instagram verified but it's my small business account not personal. They didn't accept the information provided. Got a full refund though.

People in the US on Reddit say taking them to small claims court/equivalent has got them to do something.

Facebook is not interested in helping. It's been happening to too many people for them not to know. I've assumed the account is gone.

Please let us know if you get anywhere.

Same here! I was hacked and it was so frustrating, I gave up after about a week or two of trying to:(

jellyfishperiwinkle · 26/03/2025 04:13

How did they use two factor identification without having access to your phone?

Vates · 26/03/2025 04:57

It happened to me about 5 years ago and it was Thai hackers as the language was changed from English, really bizarre! I hadn't used it in about two years so wasn't that bothered. I was more worried about the security of my email account and my Bank account, so kept a close eye on those and changed passwords/pins just in case.

Fuhjutvb · 26/03/2025 05:06

I can't remember how, but I did manage to resolve it eventually but Facebook were useless. I had just split up with my ex and Facebook wouldn't let me do things on my phone and I had to use a pc I had used before. So I had to ring him and spend a few awkward evenings at his sorting it out. Because my messenger contacts are important I needed it sorted.

Several months later I was hacked again. This time my account was linked to a dodgy Instagram account. I could only resolve it via Instagram which I'm not on. I lost over 10 years of photos on Facebook. So I set up a new Facebook account but there barely anything on it. My advice is if you get back in. Save everything then shut it down and get a new safe page.

Redhotspicywine · 26/03/2025 07:31

This happened to me, it took years but I got it back in the end! Mine was also linked to my business so a total disaster.

when they went to permanently delete it they emailed me and that link worked to reset it and kick the spam email address off. I’d given up hope and set up a new one market place etc. I was gutted about losing all the uni memories so I feel your pain

Thisissuss · 26/03/2025 08:54

Has anyone had anything else hacked - any linked accounts breached? As far as I know I haven't, which makes me wonder what the point is? I get the stealing passwords etc, but if you live paycheck to paycheck there isn't much to take? Bit like when someone used to steal your purse and the most important thing was the passport pictures of your kids because you can cancel cards quickly these days. Just feels like a gimmicky hack rather than for any real benefit?

Mamaof2cuties · 26/03/2025 18:26

My 2FA was via email. They hacked into my email. 2FA alert I set up to another email account didn't alert me. They used a temporary email account to by pass from fviainboxes.com as I saw that my Facebook email was changed to that domain.com.

I have since found YouTube videos on how to by pass hotmail accounts that use emails for their 2FA. Wonder how Outlook doesn't know about that loophole. Just check on YouTube! Lesson from this being a text message to phone is better for 2FA or authenticator app.

With that they logged into my Facebook, used my hotmail as 2FA for the code. All overnight.

I also found today that they had set up a rule in hotmail to forward every message I receive to them! I had checked forwarding in settings but not rules. I only found out because an email bounced back that the email account was full! So every email I've had since Saturday they have. Our utility bill was sent yesterday so they have full name and address. It's crazy!
