How easy is it to submit a passport application photo that is taken on your phone?

Or are they always rejected? Better to use a photo booth with a code?

I've never had an issue doing it from my phone, it gives you an indication when you submit the photo as to whether it'll be accepted or not

ChompandaGrazia · 22/03/2025 00:06

Very easy. I did mine last year. It was super quick.

No33 · 22/03/2025 00:06

Done me and all 3 kids on phone. It took a bit of time, but it was fine

Lovely thank you, 😊

I look like a complete ghoul on the phone but I guess it's just passport

Very. Realised ds needed a new passport. Sent off the docs required, submitted the photo (taken in our downstairs loo which has the best light!). We received the new passport a week later.

BunnyRuddington · 22/03/2025 00:25

It worked perfectly for me too.

Specter17 · 22/03/2025 01:25

very easy, mine was done in a rush, and wet hair, the tablet pretty much accepted it in the second or third try

I put quite a lot of make up on to try took less washed out but it wasn't great still with the stern expression and white background and strong lighting 😆

Anyway we uploaded it fine and there's a little thing that gives you a rating as to whether it will be acceptable.

I did a phone one last time and it was fine.

This time I went to a booth and got the photis and a code as we no longer have s convenient pale wall as a background.

After I put the code in, the website advised that there "might not be enough contrast between me and the background." Rude. Are you calling me pasty? God help some people, I'm light olive-skinned. I clicked to proceed anyway and whoever checking it thought it met the rules and I got my passport back in less than a week.

It took quite a lot of goes for DD. We put her in a light area of our sitting room after the PO kept rejecting our attempts for being too dark. Of course, the worst one got through. She’s pale, and the background is off-white, so she looked dead, basically.

The same happened with me. God knows what algorithm they are using but it’s usually the ones that make you look like a zombie that get through.

The photo we submitted for my daughter implied she had a wonky head 🤣. It went through ok though for the passport.

Super easy! I did mine just this week.

TheGirlWhoLived · 22/03/2025 09:15

Another for going through fine- I did all 5 of us on my phone, including errant toddler

Whitelight25 · 22/03/2025 09:16

I’ve done it, you need to follow the instructions carefully.

Theraffarian · 22/03/2025 09:17

Also lots of free apps for passport photos, honestly can’t remember which one I used last time but it made it easier too .

MaggieBsBoat · 22/03/2025 09:19

Super easy. Strangely mine added about 30 years to my face. Odd how that happens!

hereismydog · 22/03/2025 09:23

Worked fine when I took my Mum’s. Could not get one of my 9 week old no matter how hard we tried! Took him to a studio and he cracked the biggest grin for the photographer who got it in one shot Grin

minnienono · 22/03/2025 09:26

Used my phone, absolutely fine

Teajenny7 · 22/03/2025 09:26

I found it very easy. Very impressed with the Passport Office. From uploading, sending old passport to receiving new passport was exactly a week.

LIZS · 22/03/2025 09:27

Very, and they verify it there and then. If rejected just take another.

Tamarastar · 22/03/2025 10:36

Like @jellyfishperiwinkle my photo was rejected online, due to lack of contrast, then rejected when we got it done professionally and they checked online.
So just to let anyone know who has light blonde or white hair, the system is likely to reject any photo due to lack of contrast. You have to over ride the rejection on the passport application form online, and send the photo in anyway, as they get a real person to check it instead.

Pascha · 22/03/2025 10:39

I had to remove my glasses because just couldn't get a picture without a reflection but otherwise, we got an OK one on the second try. I also look ghoulish but 🤷, I don't ever have to look at it.

TickingAlongNicely · 22/03/2025 10:40

I found the best photo fir my pale DD was taken in the brightly lit shopping centre against their stark white wall. On my phone.

Nottodaty · 22/03/2025 10:42

I’ve just done my renewal, photo using phone all done in a week! Was shocked to get it back so quickly!

Make sure you follow the rules, and don’t use any affects on the photo. I look horrific in mine but don’t really care!
