How easy is it to submit a passport application photo that is taken on your phone?

Or are they always rejected? Better to use a photo booth with a code?

Thanks everyone! Is it best to take the photo outside or in do you think?

Inside. With a plain background, no objects behind or around you.

Not easy at all. Literally spent about 2 hours trying to get one for my last passport. Never again. Now we go to the photo shop and do the online code where they are pre-approved. So much easier.

It’s so easy and there’s a checker tool to see if the photo meets their specifications

Like @jellyfishperiwinkle my photo was rejected online, due to lack of contrast, then rejected when we got it done professionally and they checked online.
So just to let anyone know who has light blonde or white hair, the system is likely to reject any photo due to lack of contrast. You have to over ride the rejection on the passport application form online, and send the photo in anyway, as they get a real person to check it instead.

The odd thing is my hair is the darkest it has been in years - dark blonde/hazel, looks brunette on the photo, but still that wasn't enough contrast for the computer check. Was ok when a human checked it though.

I find this impossible as I have to take my glasses off and then I can’t see so I just did mine at Snappy Snaps where they give you a code and also send you the photo digitally to use for other stuff.

It’s very easy.
I would also urge anyone needing to renew their passport do it sooner rather than later because the price is going up.
They seem to be processing at lightning speed at the moment. I did my renewal online on Monday and my new passport arrived on Friday.

Just be careful if you're doing it as a selfie. Some selfies take a mirror image which means you'll be stuffed when trying to use the automated passport controls, even if the image is accepted by the passport office, because your real face won't actually match the picture

I did this last month for my daughter- indoors- lots of natural light behind me through the window- then an angle poise lamp behind my daughter to eliminate her shadow on the wall!! It actually came out as a lovely photo!
