I have fucked up holiday

I booked a holiday in tunisa. I have never been abroad before as an adult. I did not know tunisa is not a safe place to go. I didn't even know you could look it up. I just thought that if its not safe that all flights to that area stop . But that's not the case . I tried changing it but they told me I can't because airline operator do not go to the area I want . Its with tunisa airlines so basically it only gos to tunisa? . So i can't go change to a different destination. But unless I pay a load of money I can't cancel either.

Just to add . I do have learning difficulties. Which is probably why I did not realise all of this . I'm so pissed of

I have fucked up holiday

I went to Tunisia with 2 young children last year and we had a lovely time. I didn’t feel unsafe once.
We went out of the resort, and didn’t get hassled once.
People were wearing normal summer clothing that you’d wear in the uk on resort, and at the beach.
Try not to overthink it, I’m sure you will have a lovely time.

just to make you aware you can’t buy Tunisian money before you go so take money to convert when you arrive, you can do this at the airport in Tunisia or the hotels :)

Thank you that's definitely good to know. I have no idea what the money Sydenham if things mean though. We are all inclusive. Si in not sure what we will need money wise

When are you going?

We are going here

I think you'll be fine as long as you stay in and close to the resort. My mate goes to Tunisia every year and never had an issue. X

BusyExpert · 21/03/2025 19:21

you will be fine.

I'd suggest making sure you have enough money in cash to get yourself to and from the airport by taxi, buy some food and drinks, and some extra for any unexpected additional expenses. That way, if something were to go wrong and you have to make your own way home, you can use the money you already have available rather than having to find some more while you're there and stressed. If you want to go shopping or any trips, you'll need money for those too.

For tips and souvenirs, tours.
We tipped a five dinars each evening to our waiter (he was a star and held our table for us, brought drinks), 10 dinar given to cleaner at the end. Before we left we gave away the remaining 50 dinar we had to various staff including entertainment lady. It equaled to like 10 pounds and saves us trying to exchange that little.
When it comes to bar in the evenings (or day) tippers get table service. Non tippers had to go to bar themselves.

You don't have to tip, but it does get you better service.

1gbp is about 4 tunisian dinars now.

I tried do a location change request. I showed them where I wanted to go instead which was Spain. But they said the airline i choose does not fly there. I can only choose one of the places that tunisa airlines gos to . When I asked them what countries tunisa airline go to they replied with we can't recommend any places to you. Which is not what I asked. Ds looked for me and read them out I can't remember what they are now. I will look again in a min. But nothing stuck out

They fly to Madrid, Bilbao and Barcelona in Spain

So if I was to do that how much would I take in English money. I don't know what it would be worth in tunisa money.

I'm sure i asked them for Barcelona and they said it can't be done as they don't fly there.

You really don’t have to keep changing for meals, OP.
if you’re at the pool in the morning in your swimwear, just bring a t-shirt down with you and a sarong or similar cover up like a big shirt or tunic in case you do need to put something over the top to go to the dining room. Even a towel could suffice. (And it might well be so that you’re not sitting on their chairs in wet swimwear, rather than for reasons of modesty or ‘correct dress’.) You might not even have to do that, swimwear in a dining room may be quite acceptable.
The hotel we stayed in outside Tunis was quite posh and formal (5* and utterly lovely) but even there you could get lunch actually on the beach in your swimwear if you wanted. Burgers and seafood rather than the full buffet but all really good.

OldCottageGreenhouse · 21/03/2025 19:34

@Youagain2025Just wear similar to whatever everyone else is wearing. Have fun! 🏖️ 🏝️ 🍹 🌞

Nejma · 21/03/2025 19:35

Hi OP
I am married to a tunisian man and want to reassure you that you will be absolutely fine in the resort/Hotel.

We stayed in a hotel close by last summer and going back this Easter to see family.

The no go red zones are to the west and south as other posters have stated. You are hours away from these areas and would have no need to go that far.

if you want to do some daytrips youve got the seaside towns of Hergla/Nabeul, the larger resorts of Monastir/Sousse/Port el Kantaoui about an hour and a half south of Hammamet, and an hour to the north you have Tunis capital and Sidi bou Said.

You've also got El Djem roman amphitheatre almost 2 hrs from Hammamet.

As others have said just wear normal beach/summer clothes in the hotel but if you decide to go out shopping or sightseeing cover up a tiny bit more - not just for modesty but also the heat.

Do be careful of the young waiters and entertainment guys trying to chat you up if you are on your own (even with your kids)

The current exchange rate is 4 tunisian dinars to 1 pound and you are expected to haggle in markets and small shops but not supermarkets. You can't exchange money before you go so take some english bank notes and exchange them a little at a time in the hotel for souvenirs etc
If you tip you waiter at the start of the holiday (10 dinars) so £2.50 you will get great service. Also tip a little at the end as hospitality wages are awful.

The chambermaids will appreciate a tip as well and if you have any toiletries you don't want to bring home leave them in the hotel room for the cleaners - branded toiletries are extortionate in Tunisia.

Tunisia isn't for everyone but on the whole the people are kind and generous and love children.

Hope this helps

CountryQueen · 21/03/2025 19:44

All you need to do is look at traveller photos on trip advisor or Google to see that nobody is changing into modest dress for lunch. Looks like anything goes tbh

LibbyL92 · 21/03/2025 19:49

I’ve been to Tunisia the last 3 years running. We stay on resort. It’s lovely and have always felt very safe at the hotel.

weve been going for over 10 years. Had a break when the attack happened on the beach a good few years back. But we now go again.

CaramelVanilla · 21/03/2025 19:52

Who are you travelling with? Family? Other adults?

theDudesmummy · 21/03/2025 19:57

I think you are really overthinking the clothing issue. Everywhere has basic conventions which I am sure you stick to without stressing. Would you wear a bikini in Tesco? A long dress at the swimming pool? Etc etc Just be sensible and it will be fine.

Most people would want to shower and change for supper anyway after a day by the beach/pool/sightseeing in the heat. It wouldn't be a big deal.

Scirocco · 21/03/2025 20:03

Youagain2025 · 21/03/2025 19:27

Check how much taxi fares are, how much you think you'd be likely to spend on food and drink (and tips), and then add on however much of a cushion you think you need to feel comfortable you won't run out.

SammyTales · 21/03/2025 20:07

So...my partner is Tunisian and I've been loads and stayed at the El Mouradi. It's lovely and your will have a brilliant time. Tunisian's are super friendly. Hammermet isn't very big and it's super easy to get around. In fact, the only toughie is getting a taxi back from the town centre to hotels as it's a bit of a free for all, but you'll be obvious as a tourist, so they will help you first. The dangerous areas are miles away from the resorts. Don't worry about dress... Just dress as you would in the UK. Bikinis and swimsuits on the beach and around the pool, a pool cover up like shorts or a dress on top in the restaurants (this is nothing to do with religion... It's all about not dripping on the floors or food for hygiene reasons!) shorts, dresses, t shirts, a cardigan in case there's a breeze. All totally fine! No need to cover your arms unless youre cold! Or visiting something religious. They have a vast number of amazing unspoilt Roman ruins, so maybe book a trip. The roads are fine. Good motorways. Also, Tunisian families like going out late-ish, so walking early evening is absolutely fine. Hammermet has brilliant entertainment. Make sure to go on the little train that takes you all around the Yasmina Hammermet, it's great and you get loads of Tunisian women and kids on there singing and clapping. There's a big funfair, a promenade with fairly lights, and no, you totally don't need to cover up! Tunisia is very easy going and laid back. The only time I've ever even be asked to cover my hair was when I visited an ancient working mosque... And they had headscarves you could put on so it was actually good fun. The Medina in Hammermet old town is old and beautiful with lovely views of the sea. Make sure to go for a coffee and ice cream or waffle just at the entrance in the gorgeous cafe. Maybe don't go at night simply because it's a bit of a maze. Honestly, you will have a fabulous time. All of the people who are being a bit cautious have never been! The hotel will have entertainment laid on and there will be loads of other Brits there to make friends with. Honestly, posh coffee bars, nice shops, great leather good. Oh yes, go to Carthageland too! You don't need to go in the fun fair, but the shops and tea rooms in there are gorgeous! Really. It's great. You'll love it. Stop worrying and enjoy! But yes, do watch out for the odd cheeky barman with a wink and a smile... That said, I didn't and now we are together with twins! They are a very lovely people. Yes, Tunisia did have it's extremists, but so do we. Most Tunisians HATE them. They know they just want to ruin the economy and drag them backwards. They are in far going hills, not downtown Hammermet, so really, don't even think about it!

MsDitsy · 21/03/2025 20:09

I know not Tunisia but we went to Sharm El Sheik a few years ago. In the resort, which was the middle budget of 3 hotels within walking distance, people dressed in the same gear they would in Spain. Being not happy with my body I stuck to shorts and t shirt on the beach and the male staff asked why I wasn't in swimwear getting a tan 🤣. In restaurants I wore clothes as I would anywhere in the UK and when we went into the old town I wore a flowing summer dress and shawl over my shoulders because I didn't want to offend and it was burning hot so a hat was a must. Others were wearing shorts and t shirts.

Read the reviews for the hotel, I bet the staff are incredible, they are very grateful tourists still go and will make sure you are OK.

I agree, I think the airport part is going to be far too much, let alone the holiday.

Banana34 · 21/03/2025 20:24

Tunisia is fine if you stay in resort. Also fine off resort in some areas.

I’ve been twice and you can wear whatever you like!

Also I don't think loveholidays are sending you all with Tunisair for that money....
