How do you pronounce forehead?

Fore-head or forrid?

I’ve always said fore-head but I’m currently listening to the Harry Potter audiobooks and Stephen Fry says forrid and it’s really annoying.

Which is correct? Or is it one of those regional things? (I’m in Lincolnshire)

Fore Head

BadgersGalore · 14/03/2025 11:59

I say forred, I'm from the Midlands.

IamSmarticus · 14/03/2025 11:59

Also from the Midlands and I say fore-head 🙂

BagelAndBeagle · 14/03/2025 12:00

For-head

NewMarmiteJar · 14/03/2025 12:01

Forehead. Of course surely!

Iknowaboutpopular · 14/03/2025 12:01

I say fore head. Exactly how it reads.
But it's forred in my midlands town.

Giggorata · 14/03/2025 12:02

Forrid. SE, originally.

gamerchick · 14/03/2025 12:02

Ooo it's forred. I never noticed that before.

LightDrizzle · 14/03/2025 12:03

I say fore-head with fairly equally weighted syllables but I’ve heard very posh folk say “FORRud”.

UpUpUpU · 14/03/2025 12:03

For head, midlands

Itsyouitsyouitsallforyou · 14/03/2025 12:06

Forrid is the original pronunciation but it seems to be slowly disappearing. I always use it because I think of the poem.

Once there was a little girl,
Who had a curl in the middle of her forehead.
When she was good,
She was very very good,
But when she was bad she was horrid.

candycane222 · 14/03/2025 12:07

I think I say both!!!. So i might say ugh ive got a sweaty forred, but "the headache is behind my eyes and in my forehead".

Or perhaps I just don't know how to talk 😅

Westfacing · 14/03/2025 12:09

Fore head, or forred, both are correct IMO. Just like two-pence or tuppence

Yes!! That how I always say it. My parents say the same.

AssCeiling · 14/03/2025 12:12

Forrid, Midlands

BunnyLake · 14/03/2025 12:12

For head. I’m a Londoner.

fartfacenotfatface · 14/03/2025 12:15

Fore-head but extended family members say forrid / forred

Lindy2 · 14/03/2025 12:16

I say fore head but with the poem I say forrid.

I'd never even noticed that before. Now I've confused myself. 😂

ginasevern · 14/03/2025 12:16

Forrid is the posh pronunciation (which is why Stephen Fry is saying it and I expect the King would too). I'm West Country and we all say fore-head down here.

BearSoFair · 14/03/2025 12:17

S'ya forred, innit 😉

Candoolili · 14/03/2025 12:18

Forr-head. Midlands Ireland.

Manchesterbythesea · 14/03/2025 12:20

I think I say fore-head but the other day for some reason I said Forrid and dd16 nearly died laughing. I’m in Ireland, I think the older generation here say forrid.
