How do you pronounce forehead?

Fore-head or forrid?

I’ve always said fore-head but I’m currently listening to the Harry Potter audiobooks and Stephen Fry says forrid and it’s really annoying.

Which is correct? Or is it one of those regional things? (I’m in Lincolnshire)

I'm not American and we've always said fore head

How old are you? I think if you're under 60 then probably fore-head is what you grew up with. How did your parents and grandparents used to pronounce it?

I grew up saying forrid and it was definitely the norm in the 1960s (where I lived anyway) but by the time I was in my 40s I'd switched to fore-head, simply because almost everyone else had too by then, even my mother (in her 70s at the time). My grandmother (born early 1900s) stuck with forrid all her life.

Forrid.
I have never heard a British person say papREEKa, we definitely say PAPrika.

Gundogday · 14/03/2025 18:32

belleager · 14/03/2025 18:35

LapinR0se · 14/03/2025 16:52

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 14/03/2025 18:02

I’ve never heard anyone say PAPrika!

Me neither! papREEKa.

Still Irish (as per last post) but mostly live and work in UK these days ...

dunroamingfornow · 14/03/2025 18:38

I had a boss who said forrid , he also said tuff brush instead of toothbrush!

PrettayGood · 14/03/2025 19:07

Paprika is pronounced PAP-rikka.

SuperGinger · 14/03/2025 19:09

Forbid but fore-lock

RaraRachael · 14/03/2025 19:10

PrettayGood · 14/03/2025 19:07

Paprika is pronounced PAP-rikka.

Not by everyone

SuperGinger · 14/03/2025 19:11

Forrid not Forbid - that's autocorrect

greengreyblue · 14/03/2025 19:11

Forrid. My DM always corrected me if I tried to say forehead. She’s of Irish descent so do t know if it’s that .

greengreyblue · 14/03/2025 19:11

RaraRachael · 14/03/2025 19:10

RaraRachael · 14/03/2025 19:13

But correctly.

Forrid.
I have never heard a British person say papREEKa, we definitely say PAPrika.

🙋‍♀️

Never PAPrika. Always papREEka.

belleager · 14/03/2025 19:18

PrettayGood · 14/03/2025 19:14

But correctly.

There's no right or wrong here. Either papREEKa or PAPrika is acceptable in UK English. News to me, but having seen the spread here, I'd have assumed that.

Maybe I'll try starting a vogue for paprikAH!

paprika

1. a red powder used as a spice to give a slightly hot flavour to food…

NeverDropYourMooncup · 14/03/2025 19:18

I'm really surprised that forrid is seen as a 'posh' way to say it - mainly because that's the way I say it.

ClassicalQueen · 14/03/2025 19:19

Fore-head, the correct British pronunciation.

PrettayGood · 14/03/2025 19:19

ClassicalQueen · 14/03/2025 19:19

Fore-head, the correct British pronunciation.

Incorrect.

belleager · 14/03/2025 19:20

Do we have a regional split in the PaprEEka / PAPrika?

Me: Irish, PaprEEka.

RaraRachael · 14/03/2025 19:20

I'm sure PAP-reeka and pap-REEKA are down to regional variations but on MN that's often not allowed, just described as being ignorant or mispronunciation

PrettayGood · 14/03/2025 19:21

Another spice people get wrong, along with paprika, is turmeric. I’ve heard people on tv refer to it as ‘choomeric’ 🙉

ChompandaGrazia · 14/03/2025 19:21

I say fore head but forrid is correct, just like med-sin is correct and med a sun isn’t. But I still say medicine as med a sun.

belleager · 14/03/2025 19:23

ClassicalQueen · 14/03/2025 19:19

Fore-head, the correct British pronunciation.

Either forehead or farrid in UK English; forehead in American, says Cambridge.
