How do you pronounce forehead?

Fore-head or forrid?

I’ve always said fore-head but I’m currently listening to the Harry Potter audiobooks and Stephen Fry says forrid and it’s really annoying.

Which is correct? Or is it one of those regional things? (I’m in Lincolnshire)

There was a little girl,
And she had a little curl
Right in the middle of her forehead.
When she was good
She was very, very good,
And when she was bad she was horrid.

Doesn’t really work with FORE HEAD does it, but it does work with forrid. It’s a word that people have forgotten how to pronounce, probably Americanised.

LittleBigHead · 14/03/2025 19:24

Forred.

RP accent

We say forrid in NI. Most of us are anything but posh😆

PrettayGood · 14/03/2025 19:29

I hate all the American pronunciations that have become acceptable; fore-head being one of them. (But I am a part-time elocution/english pronunciation coach, so these things matter to me.)

Gosh that's unlocked a memory!! I thought I'd always said fore-head however reading forrid has reminded me that this is what my nan and grandad used to call it and I did as a child!

I say fore-head, except if I say the rhyme

There was a little girl and she had a little curl
Right in the middle of her forr-ed.
When she was good, she was very, very good
And when she was bad she was horrid.

Edit to say, "Snap." I was typing slowly while greengreyblue was posting.

Fore-head but I don’t think either way is correct it’s just about where you come from
