Ridiculous things customers say!

I was in an Italian restaurant today in the UK. The menu was in English. The woman at the next table asked the waiter if the prawns were cooked! He said yes of course they are. She then said that it didn't specify on the menu- it just said 'King prawns with baby tomatoes in a creamy sauce'.

The waiter then said, well it doesn't specific that the chicken is cooked- but most people realise it is. DH and I starting laughing to ourselves. It made me wonder, what other bonkers things have you heard customers say?

Why?

I had some unreasonable person telling me "My tax pays your wages"

"I pay tax too"

( so in effect I'm helping to pay myself)

As I said, I would have been disciplined for being rude to a customer if I had said anything back.

I used to work in a bureau de change kiosk in Tesco...had a serving police officer try to give me his police i.d as identification for a large transaction ( we only accepted passports and full driving licences)....when i refused his police i.d card he rammed the bureau with his trolley....utter prick.

I hope you reported him? Since you would have had his/police ID and had him on cctv?

@Darkclothes

Customer "Orange please"
Barman "Still orange"
Customer "Yes I haven't changed my mind!"

Did the barman mean to say straight orange, instead of with alcohol?

I had a woman at my till hand me a money off coupon which was very clearly marked '20% OFF GARDEN FURNITURE.'
(She didn't have any garden furniture)
Then she got very cross when l said she couldn't use it for money off her grocery shop. Said it 'wasn't clear' and 'they should make it easier to understand.'

Another lady had 3 packs of supplements. Insisted they were 3 for £3, which would have made them £1 each (they were actually £9 each).
I had to get a manager to bring the shelf label and the large sign from the display to the checkout. The sign said, in quite large lettering, '3 FOR £18' (which basically amounted to buy 3, pay for 2).
Apparently the sign was 'confusing' and we should have 'made it clearer'.
We couldn't even begin to comprehend where she'd got '3 for £3' from.

Edited

See I happen to think most of these people aren't stupid, they know exactly what they're doing, they're trying it on and hoping the server will fall for it. They're good actors.

That soluble paracetamol doesn't count in the maximum of 2 packets of paracetamol so he wants them aswell he threw them at me and didn't want any of his shopping when I said that's fine and cancelled it all he was mad I'd cancelled it.
It also amazes me the amount of customers who ask me what their password is.
Also the amount of customers who want cashback and proceed to pay with cash and then don't understand why they can't have cashback.
Iv never felt so intelligent and normal since working with the general public. It's actually shocking how stupid some people are.

In Australia it's called cash out. 'Cashback' means refund here.

Or he was clarifying if they wanted fizzy orange (britvick 55 usually) or orange juice

I agree. It seems to be a common theme that many of these odious sorts have an assumption that anybody who works in retail somehow must be stupid.

Some of the nastiest will actually say as much to retail staff, or even use them as an 'example' to their kids as to why they need to study and do well at school - so they don't end up working in retail and putting up with nasty people like their mum or dad - without any knowledge whatsoever as to the qualifications, choices or circumstances of the staff.

They think that, because the staff are so 'stupid', they'll just follow whatever they (the 'smart, superior' customer) tell them without questioning; and in the (extremely common) event that they aren't thick and challenge them/put them right, they play confused and bluster and gaslight them into not making something that's crystal clear somehow 'clearer' - because they're 'too thick' to think to do so, you see...

I once worked in a credit card company. A customer rang to close their account. they sounded relieved when I said to cut up the card and return it. I had to point out they would still get the statement every month and it did have to be payed off with interest. The customer thought closing the account meant it didnt need paying back.... The mind boggles....!

I doubt it as that isn’t a ‘thing’, he would have meant still as in squash or fizzy as in Fanta/tango.

I work on a deli counter.
How many sausages in a triple sausage baguette.
if an item doesn’t scan oh it must be free!
Do you do gluten free bread as I can’t have gluten, then ask for breadcrumbed ham on their sandwich! When told it’s gluten the breadcrumbs in ham is different apparently.

On this I do have some sympathy with the customer. I am gluten intolerant. I can’t cope with full rolls of bread, cakes etc but I can get away with very small amounts in eg breadcrumbed ham. It’s clear sometimes that people think I’m being faddy but I know my body and what it can deal with.

Last week I heard a woman on the next table complaining loudly to the cafe staff, then sending her salad back - because the food was too cold!

Well a salad should not be icy fridge cold, some things benefit for being at room temperature - eg tomatoes and cheese. I'd be annoyed if I had one that had just been taken fron a fridge but would just put up with it and not go back

Us
"So, having checked with the dvla, you actually are currently a banned driver"
Customer "so what does that mean?"
Us "if we had known, we would not have insured you, and you should not have been driving your car, so we will not pay for the damage to your car. We have to pay for the other drivers car and will come back to you for the cost".
Customer " that's not fair, you are supposed to beleive what I tell you."
Righto

I think we've found the raw prawn customer

I already said that I meant hot 🙄 And it's a reasonable question to ask. The op only mentioned it was listed under hot entrees later in a drip feed

YY - one of the first things you need to declare is "Any driving convictions?"
So "Ermmm I;m a banned driver " should come up in searches surely .

It’s down to the customer to declare any driving convictions. And in the terms and conditions it will state that the customer has given accurate information and failure to do so will render the policy null and void.

Insurance companies don’t do a search on driving convictions as part of the quote - it’s the responsibility of the driver to declare them.

Auburngal · 14/03/2025 11:20

Probably recently banned.

Any instances of points added to DL for any reason you inform your insurers asap as you may not be covered if have points and the insurance company doesn’t know.

Insurers rely on the information given by the customer in response to their questions.
Most insurers only carry out dvla checks in the event of a claim. Some do first party validation, where they ask for a dvla check code from the customer shortly after the policy comes into force. Insurers can't just browse dvla data.

NewsdeskJC · 14/03/2025 11:31

Ditto your occupation and use of the vehicle. We can also often track where you have put other details into aggregator sites to see how to get the lowest premiums.
At the point of claim, the first thing to do is to check that the policy is written correctly and the facts at inception are correct

Lady gets to my till and I ask if she has a loyalty card. Yes. She gets out her phone. Scans through to find it. Has to log in, can't remember her password. Eventually gets the card up and scans it, Then has to search through her wallet for the right payment card. THEN decides there's not enough money in there and has to transfer money from another account. Then holds it up to the reader, but hasn't clicked on the card for it to read. Pulls it off reader, stares at it, clicks a few buttons holds it back up. Money is paid.

Then smiles at me and says 'isn't technology wonderful and so fast these days!'

I sigh and long for the days when we all just had a couple of cards in our wallets.

Someone uninformed enough to think that overdosing on paracetamol means that they will not wake up is uninformed enough to think that they need lots of packets to overdose.

Paracetamol kills by causing liver failure. You wake up feeling fine and feel progressively sicker over several days as your liver fails.

You'd be disciplined for saying that if reported

I'd have been disciplined for a lot of things if i'd been reported...

I had a customer once who wanted a mikeymouse - its half and half pint

I had to stand at the bar in front of 3 other customers pouring the pint - when the customer told me it was wrong and the customer was always right. I asked the other 3 customers if they'd seen me pour it - they had indeed. So I smiled and said well thats 3 customers being right against one....

A few weeks later the landlady barred him for being obnoxious
