Ryan Air Debate

Needafriend14 · 12/03/2025 11:40

Myself and a friend are going away for the weekend next. We are flying with Ryan Air. And have both decided to take the small 'bag under seat'. The question we are debating is: can you have an additional small shoulder bag that you can carry onto the plane ?I said surely it must be allowed but she is adamant that it is not allowed.that hand bags have to be squeezed into this back pack. It doesn't give any information on the web site. Plus I am getting different opinions from different friends.
Thanks in advance.

Not allowed

WindyRoses · 12/03/2025 11:42

Not allowed it has to be squeezed into one bag. And they are pedantic bastards about this

BollickyBill · 12/03/2025 11:43

Your friend is right. It's one small personal bag which can be brought on board, such as a handbag or laptop bag (40x20x25cm), which must fit under the seat in front of you.

I take a small handbag that I can fit into my underseat bag so I have something to use day to day when I reach my destination. I guess if you can shove both under the seat that might be ok. It depends on how pedantic the staff are, really. Low cost airlines are pretty strict on the rules.

TY78910 · 12/03/2025 11:44

Not allowed but I've had my handbag on under my jacket before 😂

stanleypops66 · 12/03/2025 11:45

Put your handbag under your coat, or buy shopping in duty free and put your bag in that.

ExtraDecluttering · 12/03/2025 11:47

Not allowed, although I did get on with one of the uniqlo cross body ones under a zipped coat recently. I had room for it in my backpack if I needed to take it off.

BronwenFrideswide · 12/03/2025 11:47

Echoing everyone else - your friend is right it is one small bag (and it is a very small bag I don't know how people manage with just that bag!) And they are strict about it.

FortyElephants · 12/03/2025 11:48

No, but you can put things in your pockets and you can also take a duty free carrier bag so take your little handbag, buy a duty free something and stash the handbag inside the carrier bag. You have to be sneaky with Ryanair.

ItisIbeserk · 12/03/2025 11:50

EasyJet are the same (although enforcement is irritatingly variable). I echo the duty free bag approach - you can take a massive shopping bag with no consequence whatsoever so buy a paper from Smiths and whack your handbag into that.

valder · 12/03/2025 11:53

Or pay to bring an overhead bag. Then you can also bring the underseat bag, the duty free bag and yes, you can then go to the Ball!

PurpleThistle7 · 12/03/2025 11:53

EasyJet is the same and it's one teeny tiny bag for everything. I filled up my jacket pockets with our souvenirs on the way back from a few days away. I hate paying for bags!

This. We were stood in the queue to board and one of them stood over a poor women further down the queue whilst she tried to squeeze her hand bag and contents into her carry in case. They should really have made it clear at check-in. Maybe they did and she decided to chance it.

I have managed it before by wearing a coat over a small cross body so they don't notice it.

IEatSauerkrautBeforeItWasCool · 12/03/2025 11:56

It is quite clear. But people simply chance it

minnienono · 12/03/2025 11:57

The small under the seat bag is the personal bag, they are pretty strict too, I've seen carrier bags inspected at the gate to ensure they are duty free and people charged for an extra bag. Prices are cheap for a reason. I've got away with a thin 6inch by 6 inch cross body bag with just phone and passport in it under my coat but they didn't see it!

garlictwist · 12/03/2025 11:58

I have never paid or booked a bag on ryan air and each time I've gone on with a rucksack and no one's ever said anything.

clary · 12/03/2025 11:58

Yes as everyone says, one small bag. We flew with Ryanair for iirc three nights and it was fine. Wear your coat and your hoody. Wear trainers. Take flip flops and tiny toiletries. I have put a small, empty crossbody bag in my Ryanair backpack and then just stashed passport and phone in the pockets of the backpack.

ScarletPower · 12/03/2025 11:59

The buy something in Duty Free then put your handbag in it is the best tip and does work.

clary · 12/03/2025 12:00

I have a 40x20x25 bag I got on Amazon and it’s excellent

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 12/03/2025 12:02

No you can't. Pit it in your bag.

bellocchild · 12/03/2025 12:04

You can buy belts with enough room for passport, phone, comb and tissues from Amazon. They seem to be ok.

valder · 12/03/2025 12:09

I'm exhausted reading all the strategies to get around the actual RULE for hand luggage only on Ryanair.

Now I know it's a bit of a game (gaming the system) for many, but the stress of it all would drive me insane. If I travel with hand luggage only I plan for that and leave room for the bits and pieces. I found that a soft leather passport holder worn cross body is never checked, or at least hasn't ever been for me YET! And that will do me for out and about at destination. A phone will fit in there also.

Otherwise I'll check in a bag be it 10 or 20 kgs depending on the length of stay and where I'm going. By the time I get through passport control the bags are on the belt. Haven't had a case lost yet in 40 odd years of travelling. Lucky me. I do put a spare set of light clothing in the underseat bag though just in case.

Happy travelling.

ASongbirdAndAnOldHat · 12/03/2025 12:11

It depends if the flight is full.

I've been on an not been checked and I've been on flights where everyone is checked and only one bag of duty free is allowed and they have checked that the duty free bag actually contained duty free.

stayathomer · 12/03/2025 12:13

Nope, sorry op, friend was stopped for it. I had just shoved mine into my bag and felt so guilty I hadn’t had a chance to say it to her. She fit hers in fine but they were talking about her having to pay for her second bag

I think the bag that has to fit under the seat can be quite a good size! I use a Longchamp le pliage and it fits masses inside and goes easily under the seat.
