Ryan Air Debate

Needafriend14 · 12/03/2025 11:40

Myself and a friend are going away for the weekend next. We are flying with Ryan Air. And have both decided to take the small 'bag under seat'. The question we are debating is: can you have an additional small shoulder bag that you can carry onto the plane ?I said surely it must be allowed but she is adamant that it is not allowed.that hand bags have to be squeezed into this back pack. It doesn't give any information on the web site. Plus I am getting different opinions from different friends.
Thanks in advance.

Won't you struggle to take all you need for a whole w/e with just a single small bag/rucksack?

I bought a multi pocket travel jacket like this and beat the system. It has more than paid for itself in baggage fees!

I use a small Uniqlo banana bag for passport , phone etc and wear it under a jacket.
never been an issue when travelling under seat only.

you can also carry a bag from the airport - in uk you can just buy a carrier bag and off load some bits into it eg stuff you need for the flight - water , sandwich etc

top tip to make under seat only possible - the jml vacpak device to vacuum your clothes etc into a tiny solid lump. I’ve done a week like this - though did wash clothes

tallhotpinkflamingo · 12/03/2025 12:28

easier to just have one of you upgrade, share the extra bag and split the cost

Put your handbag under your coat, or buy shopping in duty free and put your bag in that.

Many airports seal your duty free now

LilacPeer · 12/03/2025 12:41

My experience of Ryanair lately is that they have been incredibly exhaustive in their efforts to 'catch people out'. We were behind a lady boarding to Rome a couple of months ago, who was refused to carry her handbag as well as her small bag. They watched her take everything out of her handbag, stuff it all in her pockets, walk through the gate and then put it all back in her bag 🤯

Hairoit · 12/03/2025 12:45

Yep very strict but you can wear what you like. I made it work on a 3 day trip recently by wearing black boots that go with everything, jeans and a chunky cardigan with my coat. Then all clothes I packed were tights and lightweight dresses. An oversized Tshirt and pyjamas. Then buy all souvenirs in airport. It was fine.

Easily unless you need special clothes for a ski trip, wedding etc.
Wear one pair of jeans/shorts/skirt on the plane then one extra in the bag. Add 2/3 tops and some underwear. Small plastic bag for toothbrush and mini toiletries. Add hairbrush, charger, wallet, keys, passport. I've managed loads of times.

CarrieOnComplaining · 12/03/2025 12:53

The EasyJet under seat allowance is bigger than Ryanair.

I have seen them stop people with tiny cross body bags and look in Duty Free bags. So if you chance it be prepared to cram everything into one bag, ditch stuff, or pay a huge amount for extra bag.

PeppercornAnn · 12/03/2025 12:54

Not allowed - the handbag is supposed to be the small bag you put under the chair.

Sugarfish · 12/03/2025 12:54

Only one bag and they seemed pretty strict with enforcing it when I flew with them last year. I used to fly with them regularly when I worked abroad, and they have progressively gotten worse over the years. I really try and avoid them now.

Why avoid them though? They have rules, so you comply. Nothing sneaky about that, it's only you and others who think they are entitled to bend the rules that get miffed.

PrimitivePerson · 12/03/2025 12:57

I've managed to squeeze a pretty big backpack under a seat, but that was on a BA flight where I wasn't going to be penalised if it was over a certain size. Physically there's actually a lot of space, more than Ryanair say there is, but on the day they'll charge you a fortune if they deem it too big.

Jade520 · 12/03/2025 13:02

I've just booked a flight with under seat only and it told me several times that I would not be able to bring another bag on board.

Oh it’s not about the rules, I’m happy to comply with them. It’s just the general overall experience. Tiny seats and not much room, they don’t even have a pocket in the back of the seat in front anymore to store things like my kindle or water bottle. They used to make a big deal about arriving on time but the last few Ryan Air flights I’ve been on have been delayed. I’ll use them if there isn’t another option, but I much prefer easyjet and a couple of other European budget airlines these days.

Why?

I only ever travel with just a rucksack. We've been to numerous places in the States for 10 - 14 days at a time.

We are off to Thailand soon for 2 weeks. Business class, so a generous allowance but I will only be taking a rucksack as we will be doing some internal flights and the allowances on those are pretty minimal.

Only time I have ever checked in luggage was for my daughter's wedding.

valder · 12/03/2025 13:44

@Sugarfish I know what you mean about no pocket in front. Do Easyjet have them? A tip if you're interested..... I pack a small peg bag and hang it from the handle of the tray. It holds snacks, phone, and bits and pieces. 😉 On the other hand the Ryanair seats don't recline so that's good. I've not experienced many delays apart from ATC issues really.

LlynTegid · 12/03/2025 13:47

Assume your friend is correct.

Make this your last ever flight with Ryanair. You would not want to work for a bully boss, so why support a company with a CEO who is so unpleasant?

Fair enough. I actually can't think of a time I've flown just for a w/e so I actually know nothing!

OK. I have to say I am very impressed you can carry all your need for 2 weeks in a 20 litre under seat bag.

theDudesmummy · 12/03/2025 13:53

I travel Ryanair very frequently and no-one has ever stopped me having my crossbody large purse-sized bag (big enough for phone, compact and glasses) as well as a backpack under the seat, I have to say.

Regretsmorethanafew · 12/03/2025 13:53

Technically no, but I've only been told to put my handbag into the underseat bag once in about twenty flights.

RedToothBrush · 12/03/2025 13:54

Not allowed.

By I usually take a very small anyway on the basis that I can fit it in my bag if I need to, if they are difficult. I take one because it's practical at the airport.

This is true

They have a thing where they do try and target passengers to pay more. They will single out people even though half the flight is doing similar.

They tend to go for solo passengers more than families and obvious couples. Probably because they are easier to intimidate.

It's nonsensical.
